The model appears to be working extremely well for ngmoco. Can't really blame them.
I don't mind it but it sucks when all or nearly all games are based around buying either energy, gold or premium items.

Rolando 2 sells each chapter for 59p, that is good as it's just like the full game if you buy all chapters, but then they say rolando 3 is not coming yet because they can't work out a good method to sell it, fuckers just want to sell energy in eliminate.

has anyone bought the taiko drum master game from the japanese app store? how could i do this with just an american account?

(and is the game worth the hassle, or is it something that requires a lot of DLC to play extensively?)

From the reviews I've read on the Japan iTunes App Store, it is a good game but the amount of songs in there really puts the game down (I think there's only like 5 or 6 songs). There's still no DLC yet for the game.

You cannot get Apps from Japan store directly with your American account. You must purchase a Japan Apple Gift Card (should be available on eBay) and use another email address to create another Apple Account in the Japan store in order to purchase anything from it.

I have it. It's an awesome game - the controls are perfect and it runs very smoothly on a 3G. The lack of songs is disappointing, but I'm hopeful for some decent DLC over time. As long as it's reasonably priced. Would be up for some Namco medleys. Not so interested in jpop shite.

how much is the base game? i guess buying a japanese itunes card is easy enough, but i wonder how much DLC i'd have to buy to fill out the game...how many songs in the original, and any extra modes like the PSP game?

My brother just released a game on the iPhone called Color Storm! (With the exclamation point -- without the exclamation point was being camped on). It's a blob-physics based "touch screen to splat enemy" type game. I made a thread a little earlier, but it's not getting much attention atm.

Looks good. I'm so keen for this as I always wanted to play SFIV, but have never even seen it in real life.

I hope it plays ok on an iPhone 3G.
Looks sprite based so I figure that gives it a chance of running well on older hardware.

Oh hotness. Hoping for easy mode…
I'm hoping for good swipe controls and paying less than $15 for both games, but we'll see.

Hmm, I forget now. 600 yen & 6 songs, I think.

I got approved to make my DB thing public, so here it is:

http://creator.zoho.com/japtor/igames/

I imported everything as of a little while ago. I tweaked a bunch of stuff so if you've added a game, double check to see if the entry is still accurate. Like I switched some genres around to match the existing ones, but if you feel a game really really doesn't fit in anywhere you can make a new one. I also added new fields to fill out, so use those if you know about them. Like for free/99 cent things, you would enter 99 cents and check the demo box.

Functionally I think there's a few quirks here and there but for the most part it should be fine. The links are autogenerated so you don't have to worry about that...although it could lead to some incorrect pages. It links to a Google search for "site:itunes.apple.com gametitle" and does the I'm Feeling Lucky! button.

If you've added stuff in the last hour or two you may have to re-add it here...assuming this thing working right. And for new entries, same thing applies as the spreadsheet, please limit your entries to like your top 3 (preferably just #1 even!) so as to not crap up the list. And like before, if you like a game already there, just add your name (hit Edit on the left to do so).

Just found out that GamesTM and Retro Gamer is available as apps.
Retro gamer cost 1.99 and GamesTM is available for 0.99
With it you get one free issue and you can buy more as in-app purchases.
They also have some other magazines, such as Play and some 360-mag.

Edit: just discovered that you can loan the issues you have to a friend who also has the app. The loan is for four days during which you cannot access your issue. The issue is then returned after four days.
Sounds like a really good idea.

The game doesn't look that bad in motion at all, quite impressive. Using fmv for the start of a super is also no problem as it's just a cut scene about 1-2 seconds long. Not a game I will grab day 1 as while I love on screen buttons and touch controls, a fighting game like this doesn't sound too fun with it. Gameloft's soul calibur clone worked as it was a more slower paced game, street fighter though requires a lot of dpad movements.

No experience with the app but I'm a subscriber to the print Retro Gamer. Amazing magazine.

Wow, this is interesting. Would love to see Edge on there. Might well pick both of these up just to show some support. Incidentally, I assume these will automatically scale well on iPad when that comes out...

Yeah they will. There's a bunch of other updates/optimisations coming to the magazine apps at the same time.

Was just looking at the Sega Genesis app coming soon and was thinking about the iPad. Wouldn't it be amazing if Sega brought a Dreamcast emulator/port came to it? The iPad's certainly fast enough...

The cost of additional issues is a bit high for my taste, but a good idea none the less.

Top In App Purchases
1 Issue 69 $4.99
2 Issue 72 $4.99
3 6 Month Subscription $21.99
4 Issue 62 $4.99
5 Issue 71 $4.99
6 Issue 70 $4.99

Oh, that's a bit fucking steep. Well, at least I got one issue for that starting price. I would have flipped if that was just for the app and I had to pay $4.99 on top of that for the first mag :lol
BTW, the app is slow as fuck on my 3G :(

Anyone have a suggestion for a Tycoon style game on the iphone? Is that Lemonade stand game that is on every platform seemingly any good?

This is a brand new market, and the magazines are going to feel out what the market will bear. Hopefully the price's will drop over time.

That's a pretty cool app.

Man, this thread is making an iPod Touch purchase all the more tempting.

Go for it...you won't be disappointed....we bought our two sons 8gb touches for Christmas, fantastic around the house on wifi

It was my birthday in January and l managed to persuade my loved ones to donate as much hard cash as possible :) and went and bought myself a 32gb.

Currently playing Space Miner, superb game.

Depends on where you live.

Compared to Sweden where an single print issue of the magazines cost somewhere around 100-130 SEK (£10-11, $13-18), the price of 38 SEK is quite alright.

But I can understand if the price is too high for UK-gaffers.

Yeah Lemonade is the same as the pc version, The game was free for a long time and I picked it up. Played it heaps last spring. as for tycoon games? I don't really know... I would love one. I played rent-a-lot lite and it was ok but I not what we would be looking for

Wtf GAF? Rise of the Triad came out on iphones on the 12th of February, why no mention of it here? Surely some GAFfer other than me is enjoying playing one of the most underrated classic FPS' of all time? As far as I can tell the game has been ported perfectly and runs great on my 3g - there are 4 different control options (2 single stick, 2 dual stick), but so far i'm happy with the default control scheme. The only negatives i've found so far is a glitch on the map screen that causes it to constantly scroll to the left and no way to bring up the console (there are a lot of cheats and a dozen or so secret levels that can be only accessed with console commands).

I played this game years ago on my pc and loved it. I bought the Good Old Games version to replay it, and I got stuck on the first level. I had absolutely no idea how I was supposed to pass it. Looked around for FAQs, but they were a bit too confusing explaining what to do.

I swear, I was running around the first level for about an hour and a half trying to figure out what the hell I was supposed to do and just gave up.

Maybe I'll give the iPhone version another shot.

The level design can often be confusing and maze-like in Rise of the Triad, sometimes with multiple routes to the exit or even multiple exits, but you really shouldn't have had any trouble with the first level - just keep a look out for the small iron-wrought gate flanked by a pair of torches which marks the end of each level, and remember to use the map.

I was going to make a standalone thread about it because RotT is so sweet, but I figured PC-age might've stunk it up with... PC-age-ness.

21.99 for 6 issues seems pretty reasonable to me considering the only places in my area that carry the mag charge $10-$11 an issue. While still cheaper to buy single issues here in the states rather than importing a years' worth of issues ($133!), ~$43 seems reasonable for a years worth of digital issues.

I'd kill for an awesome port of Shadow Warrior. Lo-Wang was badass.

Appshopper link here: http://appshopper.com/games/colorbind

It's a really unique path based puzzle game (well i've not played anything like it before). You have to guide little strips of paper around the screen in order to cover up little circles.

Really clever puzzles, and a cool aesthetic. And it's $1 :)

loosely like pathpix....therefore bought!!

ok so... ive been trying to beat hook champ and its pretty much impossible because of little lag spikes that hold up the game just long enough to make me miss my hook and die. It's really frustrating. I've tried restarting my phone, but it hasn't helped. The game never used to lag. WTF, gaf?

Have you- or anyone else reading this- been able to beat the 3rd Medium level? It's the last playable level in the Lite version.

It's taken me no less than a minute or two to beat every level in the Lite version, and this is the last possible one to play. I was going to buy the full version after beating it, but I've been stuck on this level for about half an hour and it's driving me insane.

Yeah I didn't have much problem with that one. Do you want a screenie? :)

EDIT: Lol, I did it earlier today, now I'm going back doing it again and I'm stuck.

I remember starting on the blue, as the blue is straightforward.

EDIT EDIT: Start with the orange, then the blue, then finally try go get the black to go.

no, not that one, the one after that

it's brown, light green, and blue

the brown and the light green dots are in the exact same pattern

the blue starts at the top right and has to finish at the bottom left of the screen

seriously, if you beat it, take a screenshot, because i just can't get it
