Ah dammit. I bought "Street Fighter IV Complete Official Strategy" by mistake. For like... $10. That'll teach me to just click the "buy" button on search results without looking at the app's full page. =p

Friggin' Street Fighter. On my phone.

Ah, and I remember the day CVG made an April Fools of SFII on the GameBoy. My how far we've come.

omg :lol

Good Lord, SF4 is AMAZING. DEFINITELY worth the money.

FYI, we're all being tricked here. This game is using sprites based on the renderings of the console version, not 3D. I initially thought it was impressive 3D running on the phone, but it's very much a 2D game. Still, looks phenomenal. It's tough to tell they're using sprites, save for a few moves with some choppy animation.

Fucking loving this game so far. Hoping there will be lots of DLC.

Edit: Ugh, lame. When you beat the game,
there's just an ad for Super Street Fighter 4. Sure makes this game feel less legit when it feeds me that shit at the end of the game, almost as if the whole point of the iPhone game is to pimp the new console title. Also, no Seth. Oh well, I still love it.

Doodle Jump was the last iPhone game I purchased and that was around when it first came out. What games should I check out that I really missed out on?
Dacvak put up a spreadsheet a while ago with everyone's suggestions: http://goo.gl/OCsi

I've been working on a database-izing of that here: http://goo.gl/aAqg
And a FAQ here: http://hippotrouble.com/iphone-db-faq/

...I haven't really publicized it much if at all so I've been the only one testing it out and everything, so uh, shit could break. Actually I'm pretty sure there's easy ways of breaking it, don't try to do so on purpose, just try using it normally. I backed everything up so worst case I can just restore (...although I remember having issues with that before too).

There are some funky quirks in Safari and Chrome but nothing broken, I forget about IE but I think it works (but pukes a bit on hippotrouble!). iPhone Safari is more or less ok (similar quirks) other than being kinda small for the big layout while Firefox should be fine.

If nothing breaks any time soon I'll probably post over on SomethingAwful and Ars (only other places I really post on) to get some more games/apps on there.

Yeah a few of us pointed it out back when the first videos came out, not a horrible compromise vs ugly and/or unplayable real 3D. Are you playing on a 3G or 3GS?

btw I think there might be a way to automatically do the highlighting on the Google spreadsheet, it'll have to be in it's own cell but I think it can work. It's a kind of ghetto trick I figured out for the highlights on my database (I put it at 5/10/20 people). I'll try adding it on sometime tomorrow.

Fuck. I told myself I would stop buying games when they first came out and now I'm downloading Street Fighter IV. Everyone's comments have made me curious.

Played a few matches with Ryu. Controls take a bit of getting use to but I was able to pull off a couple of ultras. Took me a couple tries to get down the feel for Hadokens and Shoryukens and I don't know if I'll always be able to pull them off when I need them but this is pretty damn good for an iPhone game. I can see myself playing this a lot. Worth the $10.

Contact Apple about the mistake. They will refund you.

They say it is a once off, but not sure. If it is, I wasted mine on a 99c game I accidentally downloaded instead of another.

I might be getting an iPod Touch soon, and I imagine that I have quite a bit of catching up to do from a gaming standpoint. Is there a reliable website out there that classifies games by genre and provides some sort of review or rating for each? I'm looking for something to give some structure to my purchases, rather than blind store-browsing.

I love how SFIV saves replays of your matches. I only wish I could spit them out as YouTube videos.
Love replay features, rather cool to have.

SFIV is a game I would love to play but in no rush plus I am still slowly working through the pc version, so maybe sometime down the line.

The only website I really use is toucharcade, it has an active forum and someone there usually posts about a new game or upcoming one, some young silly posters but otherwise their forums are a good read for a game you might want to buy. They are the gaf of the iphone world :P

*sorry double post :S

One thing you should do is use either AppShopper.com or the iPod Touch app "PandoraBox" to track price drops and increases. Games VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY frequently go on sale, and often get permanent price drops, and so moreso than any other platform, there's rarely a reason to buy anything full price.

Particularly if you check AppShopper and find that a game you want goes on sale every 2-3 months looking at its price history, you know full well it makes no sense to buy it now.

And sure, this might just mean saving $1 or $2, but $2 * the inevitable 50 games you buy is $100, and that's significant savings.

I'm playing SF4 on a 3GS. As far as I can tell, the framerate is a solid 30-60. Tons of fun.

Opinion on SFIV before release: ''lolz what are Capcom thinking?!''

Now everyone's buying and enjoying it :lol.

edit; I wish G'n'G would've worked well too :(

TouchArcade is not really the GAF of the iPhone world. It's more like IGN or something mainstream. A faction of the board is mature, but a good portion are young people who can't even really afford the 'itunes cards' to buy games, relying on some sort of allowance or something. Inevitably, the first reply on a new game release is asking for someone else to 'TOFTT' (take one for the team), as if it were some community where people take turns to buy games or something.

The site is a good one, the moderators and site writers are great, and the boards do have the information you seek, but beyond a handful of posters, the forums are mostly young people, it seems, whereas I see GAF being inhabited by a lot of late20s and on as well.

Meh, I was excited by it before, since eI have never played SF4, but am a huge fan of the series. I was looking forward to it a lot.

What Capcom did there is beyond amazing: the game plays just as good as it looks.
I may even prefer SFIV controls on iPhone's touchscreen... than on the DS3
O_o

After Orbital, Angry Birds, Zen Bound and Spirit I knew the iPhone had become a real gaming platform, and I think SF4 will be the wake up call for most people.

iPhone is officially a console, and a great one at that.

:: Still can't believe what I just played ::

ARGGH... looks like they pulled the SFIV app? Everytime I go to buy it I get a "The item you are trying to buy is no longer available" popup.

HOLY SHIT.
SF IV is sooo much fun!!!
I can't wait to try it tomorrow with a friend, really.

What really struck me are the controls: usually iphone games have some troubles with the virtual analog, but here it just works flawlessly (add me to those who think it's easier to make Ultras here then on DS3!).

I was skeptic before, but damn Capcom totally did it.
And this game on iPad is probably gonna ROCK.

My only complain is the limited choice of characters... i do hope they add some more fighters in the next few weeks.

...not exactly but someone asked a pretty similar question on the last page, quoting my own response here:

tl;dr - it's still kinda blind store browsing, but a store of games picked out by GAF members! The color highlights in the "recommended by" column show games with >5/10/20+ recommendations. On my DB if you sort by that column it'll put those at the top (otherwise it sorts by alphabetical order, not by number of people...just a quirk of the trick I did for that).

Played a few games of Shredder Chess, great game. I like chess but suck at it... I set the game to the lowest AI, actually won a couple games, After it makes a killer move against you a message pops up: "I don't think your last move was good (Take Back)." Nice hand-holding little game!... after the last game I won it gave me a message saying it was leveling up it's intelligence a bit. I'm now a grandmaster.

Holy fuck at SFIV, just played it on my buddy's touch, sooo addicting, didn't want to give it back. I might pick up SSFIV now.

I am new to the touch games, I have only played some of the crappy free games.

Could you reccomond me some essential gotta to have touch games? no more than $10 rice tags.

There's a dedicated games recommendation thread, but it's getting old. I understand a spreadsheet is being worked on by fellow gaffers somewhere, but really, the best thing is to randomly click on recent pages of this thread and there's always loads to find.

Space Miners, Angry Birds, The Creeps!, Edge, Unify, Minisquadron, Flight Control and Real Racing are some of my favourite games (iPhone Exclusive).

Plants V Zombies, Peggle, Space Invaders Infinity Gene, Pacman Championship edition are some great ports.

Staple classics of Monopoly, Scrabble, Tetris, and Yahtzee from EA are very solid.

Dance Dance Revolution, Doom Classic, SFiV are some fantastic iPhone scale downs.

FOr some unique solid level-by-level puzzle games, I recommend ColorBind, Electric Box, Geared, and TumbleDrop.

Card Ace, Word Ace, Blackjack Ace from Self Aware games are free and the best online card gaming.

And some tail end games on my last page:
For some interesting ports, check out Archon Classic, Flashback, Catan Civilisation REvolution, Monkey Island Speciial edition, Beneath a Steel Sky.

GeoDefense + GD Swarm, Transformers G1 Awakening, Compression, and SKyforce might be worth a look.

And some tail end games on my last page:

Speaking of which, to Dacvak:

I figured it out and added it to the spreadsheet, "# Users" to the right of the "Recommended By" column. Short explanation is that it counts the users and auto highlights yellow/orange/red based on 5/10/20 users.

Long explanation is that it actually counts the commas and adds one to figure it out. Longer explanation is that the formula counts the length of the cell, subtracts the length of the cell with commas removed (to get the number of commas), then adds one. Stupid spreadsheet had no simple "count number of x in a cell"!

So I hear you like resident evil 4-5 clones on your iPhone.

Gameloft, btw.

Seriously, SSF4 is going to be amazing to you and any others who missed out on SF4. It's the ultimate package with everything cranked to 11. If you liked the iPhone version you'd be more than satisfied with the full game. My most hyped game of the year.

Looking forward to trying the iPhone version out after hearing overwhelmingly positive impressions. Does it drain the battery?

Question about the SFIV controls. Do you have to actually draw out the motions with your thumb or can you sit it in the middle of the dpad and roll your thumb around like you can with a physical pad?

You hve to draw it out. That said if you had a big enough thumb I guess you could try a roll motion, but in general the touch screen spass are large so rolling doesn't normally work well.

Does anyone have impressions on Tilt to Live? Tilt controls make me a bit dubious with a game that requires such finesse. It looks so fun though.

Wow. You managed to post three times in a row and not offer a persuasive rebuttal to any of the positive comments.

Keep it up!
