Hey, has anyone tried Boost 3D? I got it as a recommendation off of Spirit, and it looks pretty solid, but I wanted to know if any of yall had experience with it first.

Also, how long will it take for SFIV to have a price drop? It looks pretty awesome, but I'm not much of a fighter for 10$.

SFIV is soooo much fun!

Good thing Capcom nailed the controls too, would have been ruined if they sucked. After some getting used to, but after you do, specials and combos become pretty fluid.

If you haven't gotten it yet, DO IT!

Boost 3d is fun. Shallow, but entertaining.

Also Splinter Cell Conviction screens are up.

Is there any word of Phase coming to iphone? It's my favorite ipod game.
I haven't heard anything. I was going to mention that the SDK wouldn't allow what Phase would need to work, then I remembered the beat generation in iTunes for Phase, so who knows. Up to Harmonix (MTV, EA?) I guess, in any case I think they'd have to work with Apple again to get it working.

Does anyone have impressions on Tilt to Live? Tilt controls make me a bit dubious with a game that requires such finesse. It looks so fun though.
I hate tilt controls and love the game, at least with the "top down" controls. You don't really need to play with much finesse once you get good enough. Some of the powerups can clear huge parts of the screen so you don't really need to finesse it unless you let the screen fill up...which doesn't happen much if you use the powerups well.

SF4 is fun in that "LOL, this is ridiculous/so bad it's good" kind of way. You'd be insane if you were expecting perfect controls using a touch screen anyway. The game is fun to mess around in and see what you can actually do compared to the original version (I saw someone mention they were able to do Ryu's FADC into ultra!), so it works decently enough as a novelty.

I have found that it's actually easier to do rolling moves than it is charge moves. It's a real pain getting Chun-Li's ultra off the regular way, but they also have a simple input option of charge back, then touch the ultra meter that works too.

While a PSP port would be the best (and if Namco can do Tekken 5DR/Tekken 6/Soul Calibur IV as amazing as they have done, Capcom should be able to port SF4 no problem), I wouldn't mind it if Capcom took the iPhone SF4, added more characters/detail, and ported it to the DS.

Ugh, haven't been this frustrated at a game in s long. SF4. I HATE the load times. I'm doing the dojo, and when you fail, rather than let you try again, you have to wait fir it to load the fail screen just so you can select try again to load back into the challenge you were just in. Why not just let you try again?!?!

Is this a joke post or something? :)

iPhone has about 5x the combined processing power of the Nintendo DS CPU's. iPhone also has better graphics processing than the Nintendo DS which is basically a joke when it comes to 3D.

Let's look at the specs:
Original & 3G:
CPU: Samsung 32-bit RISC ARM 1176JZ(F)-S v1.0 620 MHz underclocked to 412 MHz
GPU: PowerVR MBX Lite 3D

3GS:
CPU: Samsung S5PC100 ARM Cortex-A8 833 MHz underclocked to 600 MHz
GPU: PowerVR SGX

Nintendo DS:
CPU(s): One 67.028 MHz ARM946E-S and one 33.514 MHz ARM7TDMI
GPU: Nope

iPhone obviously have really shitty controls for fighting games, but porting this to NDS would just be a disaster.

You guys must be high or something. No matter what you say, I'm not gonna get SF4 on the iPod Touch. I don't trust this monster one bit.

It's actually a very well-done port, considering the system limitations. And even though the virtual control stick area is a bit big, they did a great job making it guess what you are trying to do. Didn't take me long to get used to it, and owning the 360 version of SFIV, I could figure the moves out immediately - for the most part they are the same. The only thing I could wish for would be less FMV's and more characters.

<snip>

Let's not. What 3D do you see in SF4 on the iPhone? Those are prerendered sprites fighting on top of static background images, with FMV for the ultras. There was a decent enough port of Killer Instinct on the SNES back in the day. The DS could certainly handle this.

iPhone obviously have really shitty controls for fighting games, but porting this to NDS would just be a disaster.

If you took SF4 iPhone as it is now and put it on the DS, it would be 1000 times better because of the controls alone.

buffi said:
I agree.

It's still not viable for the NDS.

If it were done in the same way as on the iPhone? You've got to be kidding me. :lol This is a stupid discussion anyway. I want SF4 portable on a platform that can actually do it justice. Namely the PSP.

So I hear you like resident evil 4-5 clones on your iPhone.

Gameloft, btw.

What depresses me is that this stuff sells like hotcakes. I've tried quite a few Gameloft games and they're crazy overrated. Their Call Of Duty clone was a great example of how to do FPS controls without a controller - that said - it's still just a substandard FPS. Yet thousands and thousands of people coughed up $7 to play it.

Sometimes - the world confuses me.

I think gameloft have done a good job with most of their titles on the app store.

yes theres "clones" but they are damn good "clones"

Seriously how hard is it to make their own game? the RE5 clone is so far impressive and I bet it runs well like nova and their other stuff, but why the fuck do they have to also go copy the same sort of areas? if only they went with an oversized mansion...

I'd beat you in a game of SF4 on my iPhone if you were using an arcade stick.

Lol, whatever. Still, the controls are great.

No matter how decent GameLoft's clones may be they are completely soulless and disgusting. I will never support those blatant ripoffs.

What's more is that the iTunes AppStore is FULL of sleazy, disgusting, and soulless developers and their products. Thousands of people trying to make a buck by screwing people or other developers over. I understand that it's something that will always be there when you have a system as the AppStore in place (Same goes with XBL Indie Games), but it doesn't make it any less palatable. I have and will only continue to buy games from developers that actually care about their products, the industry, and their fans. Anything less is keeping the AppStore from maturing.

And yes, I do have something up my butt this morning.

Side note: For the people that hate the douche who had "Edge" copyrighted yet support GameLoft -- shame on you! The circumstances are different but it's just as gross.

So iPhone/iPod Touch GAF, I discovered a gem on the Appstore that I want to share with you.
Across Age:

It's a bit like Zelda/YS. You attack enemies by bumping into them at an angle or pushing a button.
But the bump method is a much more effective way of attacking if you can get it right and the reach of the button-press attack isn't that great either.

The girl can shoot magic projectiles and gets a few different spells as you play the game.

You can also split up which could make for some fun dungeon design later on (I'm not that far yet) and the music feels like classic RPG music with a modern touch, no 15 second music loops in sight.

It also has females with huge boobs and I know gaf loves boobs.

Unfortunatley there's no lite version but if you like ARPG's you can't really go wrong with it imo. It's around 7 Dollars.

If I don't want to dig through the shitload of pages that this thread consists of (which would most certainly be enjoyable but oh so time consuming), is there a list of sorts with the best Ipod Touch games listed with pics?

To whoever sent that link for Word Rush, I am really enjoying the game, but one annoying thing is that I chose "sound off" and yet, when I listen to something on my ipod while playing the game the sounds are still coming.

Look back a page or two. There were a few links.

I'm on the fence about this. It's soulless, sure, but it's giving the people what they want and not gouging them with ridiculous prices - and though the names are hilarious knockoffs, they are unique brands. If anything it should prompt the IP holders of the original to get moving and release their real-deal IP and take the platform more seriously, instead of releasing watered-down version that are essentially milking their own names for some sales (which of course they are completely able to do as well, hell it is an IP they own - they can do anything they want with it).

Case in point - Gameloft releases Gangstar. It's a very blatant ripoff of GTA, but suited for the iPhone and (relatively) well-made, and priced accordingly. R* follows suit (6 months later) with a genuine port of GTA for the device and it sells like hotcakes. Is Gangstar "bad" for existing? If anything, it was a good testing ground to prove to R* that there was a market for this type of game, also it showed the audience that a GTA-type game could "work" and be enjoyable.

EA,THQ, UBI and ATVI (and the like) all really need to get their act together and start making more of an effort to take this mobile scene seriously. So far they (mostly) stick their toe in the water and drizzle out releases here and there. To be honest I wholeheartedly suspect they are waiting for the little guys (chillingo, ngmoco, gameloft, etc) to figure it out/battle amongst themselves and then they'll just swoop down and start snapping those guys up. Until then, they are going to keep concentrating on consoles, and we'll have to keep dealing with "imposter IP"

Might be old, but what happened to Stoneloops?

I think it was the first game I purchased in the AppStore, but recently I noticed that wasn't on my iPhone anymore (it magically disappeared?!). I immediately tried to redownload it, but I can't seem to find it in the (Dutch) AppStore anymore. I have tried to find it a few times the last few weeks... without luck.

Did Apple pull it? >:(

I don't think I have ever purchased a gameloft game, but I think they do fill a void. They exist and are successful for the very reason that people are buying their games.

The games industry has always been full of clones, and for a company to swoop in and fill the gap that other companies aren't taking advantage of me is just clever business. There's an opportunity there, and Gameloft have the gumption to move in on it.

Yeah Mumbo Jumbo complained and Apple pulled it. Shady, but (to some degree) understandable...

Oh wow. One of the greatest games on the phone. It worked so well, and now I cna never play it again just because Mumbo Jumbo can't handle the competition... I'm not getting Luxor, if that's what Mumbo thinks! I don't even like how it looks, IMO StoneLoops had a much better (graphical) presentation, and it looked significantly different enough for it to be pulled IMO.

What happens to my €0,79 now, lol?

Have you checked out Atlantis Sky Patrol? Game is $3... but well worth it imo. One of my first app store purchases... and one of my favorites.

I have no real issues with what Gameloft is doing because really they're just taking advantage of a huge gap in the market place. The "owners" of the games they're mimicking aren't that aggressively producing games for the iPhone so why should Gameloft sit on the sidelines and do nothing while the market isn't being served.

The other thing is that the video game industry has a long history of companies mimicking others' ideas and adding their own flair (especially in the early arcade era) so I don't feel that any harm has been done.

Let's try to predict what series Gameloft's going to shamelessly clone next. Maybe a Mass Effect clone. Call it Large Result and you've got a winner there.

:lol perfect.

I'd buy that for a dollar!

Tried to DL SF4 and it appears to be stuck in a loop, even via Itunes.

Once it finishes DLing it just restarts the DL all over again. I've seen this happen before on the iphone directly but never through Itunes before.

Well everyone loves Popcap now so it's a valid enough way to run a business, I guess. Soon everyone'll forget how evil you used to be.
