I am want to pick up a few good games to take with me on vacation in a couple of weeks. GTA China Town Wars and Plants vs. Zombies are the 2 that I will buy for sure but what other games are "Must Own" on the iPod touch? I am not that interested in puzzle and/or casual games and prefer games with a little bit more depth.

Any suggestions?

Since Saturday: ESPGALUDA II.

If you want great RTS with awesome art try Red Conquest.

Sorry for the noob question but I am really new to the iPod Touch gaming scene. My 30GB iPod classic has zero battery life so my wife picked me up a 64GB iPod touch as a surprise. I have ignored iPhone and iPad gaming from the start so I am starting from square one.

I'm going to recommend you my top choices for the best, full-featured apps (as opposed to the countless one-trick pony games on the system) since you're going on vacation.

DEFINITELY grab Space Miner. It's one of the best action games on the system.

If you like shoot 'em ups you can't do better than Espgaluda II.

Undercroft is an absolutely wonderful old school Might & Magic-esque PC RPG.

Sword of Fargoal is my best choice for an action-rpg/light rogue-like, and it's fantastic. You can dig in and play it for hours, or drop in and play for a couple minutes (it loads quick, constantly autosaves no matter how you close the game).

Also, one of the best quick games on the system is "charadium"... it's an online pictionary-esque game (though you'd obviously need a wi-fi connection in your case since you don't have 3G)

There's a bunch of other great games out there but these are a good start and perfect for some gaming time during a vacation.

So, Football Manager Handheld launches tonight....

Sounds very much like the PSP version, cut-backs and all. But then I'm not expecting miracles, so it could provide plenty of quickfire entertainment on the move. :)

Sports Interactive has announced Football Manager Handheld 2010 for iPhone - and it's being released in "the next 48 hours".

The iPhone version features over 20,000 players and allows wannabe gaffers to take charge of "any team from 34 leagues from nations including England, Scotland, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Portugal, Brazil and Australia," according to developer Sports Interactive.

SI also promises a specific "user-friendly" skins and functionalities, and club logos for all licensed leagues. Plus, you can listen to your own music while your manage. What does Sam Allardyce strategise to, you reckon?

"We don't know exactly when it will be available in the apps store, although we've set a midnight local time release for tonight - it takes a while for all servers to propogate though, hence me saying it'll be live in the next 48 hours," explained SI boss

Still sounds like a fair amount worthy of a purchase... can't wait. Just hope this gets released in the US and isn't just a UK release though.

IGN has actually reviewed the game already.

Getting more and more interested in buying an iPod Touch (32 gb preferably), but I'm not to keen on paying the normal price it currently goes for. Does anyone know any good online deals for mainland Europe?

Aaaaaaaah :D

I looked for a football manager app a while back and was surprised to not find one. Finally!

Edit: And I see I must have missed Championship Manager 2010 Express. Might give that a look.

Football manager seems to be much more in-depth for the iPhone than Championship Manager.. I also like FM over CM for the PC much much more.

FM iPhone, yes please!!! I've been meaning to try the PSP version, but I think iPhone is a way better fit (especially with the lower prices). Will definitely buy, unless it's an unreasonable price.

Looks like a reskinned epic pet wars.

I had fun with them back when I first got wifi working with my touch (I lived away and had no wireless) but eh, I will stick with Pocket Legends and IMO :P

My life is officially over... having FM with me 24 hours a day 7 days a week, i really don't see myself doing anything else anymore. This game is like crack on crack

OK, Hook Champ is absolutely amazing. Best platformer on the system by far, but it wasn't taken far enough. Controls and movement like this need to make their way into a more varied game with more content. I would pay much more for it.

The two things that they absolutely nail are controls (best yet in an iphone platfomer, if you ask me) and framerate (60 fps). Having a smooth, fast 60 fps makes a world of difference. When many other platformers chug along at 30 fps with slowdown and/or hitches, this is smooth as butter.

I'd gladly sacrifice resolution for smoothness as it really improves the experience. A lot of these games have terrible art anyways so a pixel approach would really work well.

I adore the focus on momentum this game brings to the table.

So, now that we're in 2010, can anyone name any other fast scrolling games which actually pull off 60 fps?

I'd like to recommend Solomon's Keep (currently 0.99) here. It's a fun dungeon romp meets dual stick shooter game. You play a wizard and as you level up, you can choose your skills and "build" yourself as either a Magic Missiles dude, lightning, or fireballs. The combat take a little getting used to and the game crashes once in a while but it is a lot of fun. Give it a try!

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi4wSKVGgVU&feature=player_embedded

What could have been :(

I loved it up until I got to a point that I simply can not get pass. The controls are fine until it starts throwing so many bad guys at you you can run around and dodge them effectively. The dual analog isn't even the worst part, trying to hit a secondary spell is impossible. It registers only like 1/3 of the time that you clicked the icon. If I need to cast something I just start smacking the icon hoping it goes through in time

Maybe I just leveled up wrong. I was going all lightning with a ring of fire as a secondary skill. Maybe I should have gotten teleport to deal with all the doors closing behind you.

Port begging is off limits I think but I would love this game or similar game on the consoles. Dual Analog dungeon crawling just simply rocks

For what its worth it never crashed on me - I think its been updated since that post though (I'm using a 8 gb touch)

What are the top 2-3 racing games on the App store?

I'm curious about Real Racing and Crash Team Racing (or whatever it's called).

Any other decent racers?

I tried Across Age EX edition. Sigh...
This time, I'm done with touch d-pad/buttons games for good.

I hope the iPhone dock-pad is real and that many games implement it. Or else, they use the bluetooth keyboard option that will be available in OS FW 4.

I have Jet Car and it's like a mediocre Gripshift, mostly due to the controls (tilt) and physics. Have you ever played a flight sim where you had to taxi the airplane and it was difficult due to the plane being meant to fly and not drive so it felt really floaty? It's like that.

I want to buy one $9.99 game.

I have it narrowed down to GTA Chinatown Wars and Tony Hawk 2.

Which is better?

You should wait and buy Football Manager :D

I guarantee that anyone can get hooked. I don't really care about 'soccer', only cursorily pay attention to the sport, but I love Football Manager.

Okay, I bought Dark Void Zero. The game itself is cool, but I think the placement of the virtual controls are pretty bad, and unlike the amazing SF4 port, there's no option for moving them. It's strange. The d-pad is too far from the edge, while the buttons are too close. Can't really recommend it. I'll play it more though. Maybe I'll get used to it.

why is dark void zero in full widescreen? can you change that? i was expecting mega man II with hopefully better controls.

if FM is like the PSP version, i'll probably prefer it to the "full" game. i really like the streamlining!

Oh they're just teasing now >: Search for football manager in the US store and it pops up for half a second, like it's in the registry but hasn't hit the release time just yet.

Warp Gate is out on the US store.

Right, so that's awesome. Buying now.

Edit: This is amazing. Haven't gotten into the meat of the game yet, but just flipping through the tutorials it looks really high quality.

Can't change it from widescreen. Don't remember MM2, but these controls aren't good.

Gah, this game should have had twinstick shooter controls. It's just too frustrating as is.

Holycrap at Bird Strike being free. Anyone on the fence/lazy, DL this NOW. One of the best iPhone games I have seen.

Also thanks for the heads up on that Tribes game, grabbing it now!

Our game 180 is in submission at Apple, hopefully it will pass thru soon! It's been a long time to get to this point.. I am wrapping up the trailer now, will post it here in a few days. We'll have a free demo available as soon as the coder wraps it up, as well..
