How so? I was thinking of picking up Super Quickhook but if Hook Champ is better I'll go with that.
Hook Champ is done in an 8 bit artstyle, and just has more charm overall, very retro. Super Quickhook has notable game improvements (like giving you rocketboots immediately) and stuff, but some of the later levels don't require you to buy treasure maps like Hook Champ, but instead beat developer scores to advance. And I hate racing against the clock (even worse when you have to pick up enough coins to compete too). Though a weird offset to this is that it doesn't pressure you like Hook Champ in the sense that you have a monster chasing you. And the 16-bit art-style is less charming, mainly because the character and hook look slightly out of place.

Watch youtube videos and make the judgement yourself, it comes down to preference. I think they're both good, but Hook Champ was more charming, even if Super Quickhook is refined quite a bit more than it.

Toki Tori is on sale ATM, only 99 cents. Regular price is $4.99. Worth it for anyone who dosent have it. Plays just like the wiiware version.

Edit: bargainbin is also free ATM until they fix some bugs with the app in ios4. One of the better app's for price watching. Only one I know of that sends push notices if an app meets your desired price. Also let's you stalk popular app's. One of my fave discovery tools for the app store.

Wow that game is friggin' great! Also thx for the bargainbin suggestion, looks handy.

After weeks of deliberating, I decided to crack and get Robot Unicorn Attack. I loved the game online, but didn't really want to pay $2.99 for it. But seeing as my Fiance got hooked, and she has my iPod Touch first gen, I thought it would be worth the price if we both played it.

Of course, I had to pay $5 to upgrade the iPod touch firmware, because Robot Unicorn Attack doesn't run on 2.x devices. Fine.

It installs and plays on the iPod touch (no sound - but that's the hardware - so we do lose Erasure), but more disappointing is that on my iPhone 3G, it goes to a black screen after a flash of white after starting. I hear the music, though, so maybe I can combine the iPod touch with my iPhone 3G for a full experience? :/

Anyway, after a reboot, it works, but soon stops working after that. I imagine the overhead of iOS4 on my 3G is just too much for it. Shame.

That's weird, I just bought Robot Unicorn Attack this morning, too. The game is fun, and actually a lot more challenging than I expected, but boy does this game need leaderboards.

So I got my 3g touch today and bought my first apps and games. I ended up buying the giant bomb app, zenonia 2, star defense, and tilt to live. I've got a few more bucks to burn, what else should I buy?
Do you like point and click adventure? Hector is awesome.

I've recently enjoyed
Fruit Ninja
Plants vs Zombies
Words With Friends

I'd do both.

I think Super Quickhook is better, though. The core mechanics are better, there is actual level variety (Hook Champ has basically ONE tile set for the whole game), and it just feels more refined overall.

Have a hard time playing Hook Champ after Super Quickhook, though...

Too much to go through in this thread for me, but basically I'm looking to see if anyone DLed Guitar Hero for the iPhone and has anything positive to say about it.

yeah my problem with Quickshot is its a make-your-own-challenge type of game. the challenge comes from being able to perform a skill more and more efficiently, and not really from level design.

its like saying see how fast you can whittle this stick. ok now do it faster.

I hear so much about awesome iPhone games, yet truthfully the only ones I've really enjoyed so far are things like Angry Birds, Peggle, Orbital, Plants vs Zombies and Dictator Defence, the rest just seem terrible.

Why are games like Rolando, Beneath a Steel Sky, Zenonia, GeoDefence, Archmage Defence, Soosiz Spider, Zen Bound, Metal Gear Solid Touch (I could go on, but won't) so highly rated? They're absolutely terrible and I could barely manage to play any for more than a few minutes.

So yeah, there must be some other decent games out there that are actually well suited to the phone? ;_; Looking around online just brings up all of the stuff like above.

I feel the same. Most the games I like are real simple like Solitaire and Drop7. Most the "AAA" games suck IMO.

i think it has a lot to do with affiliate links, and sites with revenue models built off of them. then you get sites like toucharcade hyping any halfway playable game for a bunch of apple/iphone game fanboys, a lot of them who probably reside outside the big 3's main distrubution loop of n. america/europe/japan and rightfully feel neglected, fueling their irrationality.

still, there are good games out there, but its nearly impossible to know whose opinion to trust due to the aforementioned reasons.

and some of the good games do have a barrier of entry, requiring you to spend more time fumbling with the inputs than its worth compared to your perceived value of the game. for instance i really enjoyed Miner Disturbance after adjusting to the controls, but at .99 cents, its hard to give a game the benefit of the doubt.

It's better than the iPhone port of Rock Band.

While I haven't played every game you listed (BaSS, Archmage Defense, MGS:T), I would find it hard to call most of the others "absolutely terrible". Sure, some of them may not entirely be suited to mobile (Zenonia), and some may not be original (Rolando). Some are just refined versions of existing genres - GeoDefense is viewed as a very pure defense game. Soosiz is not a bad platformer, but Spider does it even better by using the touch controls effectively. And Zen Bound is one of those games that actually just clicks within the confines of the device.

It's different strokes for different folks. I don't particularly like Tilt To Live because I'm not crazy about avoidance games that rely on tilt controls. I can appreciate Doodle Jump even though a lot of iPhone gamers I know can't understand the appeal. Find the stuff you like, and dig into it farther.

From the sounds of what you're playing (Angry Birds, Peggle, PvZ), you like games with action/puzzle gameplay that gradually progress and throw new elements at you. So definitely look at Hook Champ and Super Quick Hook; you will probably love Sword & Poker 1 or 2; Toki Tori is on sale and you might dig that. Maybe try Train Conductor or Flight Control if you want to dip a toe into chaos management. And if you don't mind sports games, Gamevil's Baseball Superstar / Soccer Superstar games are a lot of fun as an RPG-like experience.

Have you checked out Apple's Best Games You've Never Played list? Or the GAF list?

Has anyone tried playing The Quest on an iPhone 4?
Is it supposed to be this sluggish, or is the game simply borked on the new OS?

I hadn't played it much on my I old phone yet but enough to know it's borked for sure.

So, it runs worse on iOS4 than you recall on your older phone?
Sorry, but you're post wasn't entirely clear.

While the thread is bumped, I'd just like to post this. Yeeeeeeeeessssssss! :)

Thanks to UK GAF helping us get Flick Kick Football to the number 1 spot on the UK App Store.

Note that our "free for one day only" promotion of Flick Kick Rugby has turned into a "as long as Flick Kick Football is up there we are too nervous to switch back to paid" special. So if you haven't grabbed Flick Kick Rugby yet, it is still available free.

Did any of the Orcs & Elves games hit the App Store?
Searches aren't pulling up much save for a confirmation, of sorts, that it was on its way.
But that was back in August of 2009.

tengiants said:
oh yeah, sorry, that was an awkward sentence. it runs terribly in iOS4 on the new iphone compared to my old 3g.

Well, thanks for confirming. I think I'll email the devs tomorrow or something.

Just bought Football in Australia. You can thank me later when it reaches #1 ;)

Can anyone suggest some must have games that are on special?
Or alternatively, a website that has the best deals of the day? My partner just got an iPod Touch and we're looking at getting some more games for it.

Thanks for the replies and recommendations guys, really appreciate it, Remy in particular!

Have to say I do really quite like Hook Champ, so will check out Super Quick Hook too! Sword and Poker as well since that looks decent. Unfortunately Toki Tori falls into the 'terrible' category for me, and Flight Conductor I'm not sure on, would you say Train Conductor is better? Soccer Superstars is well worth a look for me then, football + RPG experience sounds great :)

I dont know if all you guys knew that except me, but I found a nice app called "Free App A Day" or FAAD.

Guys that dont know it, they should try it. its free and alerts you about free apps etc :)

I personally prefer Train Conductor to Flight Control, as the fact that you're working with tracks (rather than freeform air space) and you can stop the trains if necessary makes it a little easier on my brain. I can get into "the zone" with TC where I'm just flinging trains around and top seed, but I can never get there with FC.

That said, if you like one, you'll probably like the other.

Wow. I've not even had my iPhone for a week and I already managed to accrue something like 70 apps/games! :o
:lol I know the feeling. I'm one month in and nearly 400 apps deep. It helps that I was already predisposed to handheld gaming. It's just so easy to fire up iTunes and find 5-10 apps that I want. Admittedly most are only a couple of steps above free flash games but on the other hand, I just bought The Settlers for 59p (or one can of Coke).

Nectaris! Man I forgot I actually bought this game (and was excited for it). I still haven't launched it even once, just been too busy and overwhelmed with too many other apps.

I think iPhone is the first platform which I regularly pick up games for and quickly forget about, for a number of reasons :( Are games getting too "disposable?"
This much is true though. I bet I could find 50 apps on my phone that I really want to play, have paid for and downloaded and yet, never launched. Doesn't matter though, they aren't going anywhere!

Thanks Remy, I'll check TC then :)

Have to say with Carcassonne, I tried it on the 360 and really didn't get on with it at all. Not just I didn't enjoy it, I didn't actually understand what I was doing either :\

Hell yeah! then we can help people 'fertilize' their 'crops' if you know what I mean ;)

Got an app for you just here.

Now, get back over to OT. There's a duck story that desperately needs your input.

Edit: Just noticed, 1942: First Strike was released today! (£1.79). Bought.

Yes worth mentioning that it goes up to $10 when the iPad version comes out (think that is soon but I don't know for certain) but if you get it now for $5 you get the update for free. Best multiplayer experience on the iPhone right now imo.

Not so much game-related, but I just got DC, Marvel, and Comics apps. Wow, never knew they were available on iPhone, great idea.

Does anyoe know if I can get manga the same way?

I was looking through magazines at Barnes and Noble last night and saw there's a Dexter app. Aren't too many 3D games I like but as Dexter's one of my favorite shows I may give it a shot.
