Any impressions of Let's Golf 2 and/or Risk? They were both released today.

I just bought Risk and I am really enjoying it. I am only playing single player and the CPU has been challenging, but not cheap.

castlevania puzzle isnt for everyone. I personally don't like it one bit, but then again I never really loved puzzle fighter as much as some people and i dont think puzzle fighter is that great when using touch controls.

If you like puzzle fighter and castlevania SOTN though, I don't really think you could go wrong :lol

Can someone please recommend the best arcade-style sports games available on the app store?
I'm keenest on golf, tennis, bowling, and perhaps darts.
No sim-style sports games, please.
Star Dunk is sporty once you take away the fancy space skin. Basically a side view pop a shot but with powerups (gained by lighting up the 4 backboard panels) and online multiplayer vs.

Castlevania: Encore of the Night is awesome. Puzzle fighter meets puzzle quest meets Castlevania.

The controls are a bit hard to get used to, but remember that you can use your finger anywhere on the screen. Keeping my finger in the middle helped immensely.

The only thing I've had trouble with so far is the swipe-drop. Seems inconsistent or maybe I just have to find a technique. Coming from many, many hours of Lumines Touch so I'm not unfamiliar with swipe-drop.

These are my comments on Let's Golf 2, as someone who is a huge HSG fan and who never played LG1:
-As a preface, the game is quite quality all around. The fact I would even compare it to HSG says a lot, so keep that in mind.
-Presentation is good and I find the graphics really nice and colorful. I read some reviews hatin' on it because I guess it doesn't have retina display or whatever tf so keep that in mind if you are a whiny iPhone4er.
-Lots of depth. Basically a complete ripoff of Hot Shots portable not only in presentation but also in the fact that you unlock costume parts to boost stats. This isn't a bad thing though, means that if you're into the game there's a ton of content here. Characters each have their own powers which is pretty cool as these things go.
-Not a big fan of the physics. Sometimes the ball does this weird slidey thing where it looks like it's gliding on ice. Also the spin effect is insane. You can send your ball flying in a completely different direction on landing with spin. This was a bit jarring to me coming from HSG where spin can be really subtle with most characters. Like most old-school golf games, on putts there's no feel of inertia at all. Ball just kind of goes then stops, you can't have one sneak in by sheer slow-rolling momentum like in HSG.
-Difficulty (for now) seems really low. Almost feels like playing on auto-pilot in that I find so far just doing what the computer tells you to do gets you great results. They even have a little indicator for what % to hit at to get the ball at the hole. Probably becomes more difficult later.

All in all I'd say the 4/5 or whatever on the app store currently is a fair rating. Fun, tons of content, and a good game all around, but certainly a pale imitation of HSG.

Is there a way to make the power/accuracy meter move along at a quicker pace? Judging from videos, it looks like it's impossible to hit a bad shot simply because the meter moves so slowly allowing for perfect power and accuracy at every shot.

I'm a huge HSG fan so I'll give this a shot. I'm sure there are a variety of subtle touches that HSG has in terms of physics, etc. in which Let's Golf can't compete.

Did you ever play Tiger Woods?

Yeah the meter is really, really easy to get perfect. I don't know if there's a way to bump the difficulty in general -- maybe there is. Did not play TW; just generally not a big fan of that series. Real-world golf themes bore me :p

That's an understatement they are terrible :/

Let's Golf 2 looks great on my Retina's. Couldn't resist when I saw it was native. :lol Game is pretty fun, as well, but makes my 4 damn hot at the top...

Whoever made that song for the Kenya course needs a beating, though. So damn catchy, and it's just the same 20 seconds looped over and over.:lol

Oh interesting maybe those reviews were full of it. Yeah I think the game looks really nice; better than I expected.

Everyone keeps talking about Hot Shots Golf in comparison to Let's Golf 2. How about some Mario Golf comparisons?

Retina Display support was added as an update today...really just a few hours after the game went live on the store.

The big news for me is that App store updates can seemingly go live in hours nowadays. Flipboard for the iPad and Let's Golf 2 for the iPhone.

good stuff.

Are you guys still playing Carcassonne? I'm not very good, but I got it last week and I've been playing a couple games a night. I have no idea why, but I totally love it. Username's undeux.

It's not very good, but you love it?

Carcassonne is a classic boardgame, and the iphone adaptation is excellent.

Oh yes, we are very much still playing. Have about eight GAF games going right now!

edit: I don't think I could ever get tired of Carc. So chill with the push notifications and the simplicity of the game and different every time you play.

I assume Ecco the Dolphin is the Genesis version and not the Sega CD upgrade? I'd possibly buy it if it had the godly CD music.

Hey y'all - the card game I programmed, Dungeon Solitaire, is free for a day, so now you can finally try it out without having to be the guinea pig :) Works as a native iPad app too.

I would kill for a good emulation of the CD version.

What happened to MotionX Poker / Poker Quest? Was showing it off to a friend of mine and suggested they go download it. Searched the app store and both are gone. :(

I've clocked about 30 minutes, so here are your impressions:

First thing that will strike you if you've played SOTN is that Konami has created almost no new assets for this game. The music is the same, the sprites are the same, the map is practically the same. (The character portraits are sufficiently high rez.) If you love SOTN as much as I do, this is a great thing, but others may feel it's lazy.

Think of the map system as Puzzle Quest, except on the map from SOTN. You move from room to room, some rooms are locked off until you have an appropriate item. Moving to a room may get you into a random encounter, you might find an item, or nothing could happen. You can still hit random mobs in rooms you've been in before.

Battle plays a bit like Puzzle Fighter: you're dropping paired gems down a well and you want to match 3 (doesn't have to be in a straight line). The pairs sometimes include inactive pieces which you have to match next to to activate, but that makes chaining pretty easy since you can buffer in pieces to break. There's no "giant gem" building ala Puzzle Fighter. Making chains sends inactive blocks over to your opponents. The sort of twist combat here is there's a timer at the bottom of the screen, and when the hourglass runs out, both players take some quantity of damage (HP meter at the top) based on how empty their playfield is. So the goal is not to necessarily create giant chain structures (unless you can tank the damage) but to balance an empty playfield with flinging shit at your opponent. Note that a full playfield does NOT kill the other player, but does "a percentage of damage" and knocks a few lines out of the bottom. So filling their screen is likely to kill them but it's not instant death. (There's also a type of block called a "Blood Block" which is apparently a wildcard, but I haven't seen them yet.)

You can also use items or magic during battle - there's a "quick cast" button that lets you assign four items or spells to four quadrants of the screen. I only have healing items so far so can't tell you what spells are there.

Battle controls: Tap to rotate, drag to move, swipe to fast drop. Controls work pretty well and there's a sensitivity slider in the settings to change how much of a swipe you need to fast drop.

Character building: oh man, there's a lot to do here. Strength increases your attack power, so more damage per hourglass flip. Stamina increases your maximum HP. Intelligence increases your maximum HP and increases spell effectiveness. Luck influences the color of block spawns for you AND your opponent. Then there are five affinities, one for each element/color of block - leveling those up will unlock you spells at various milestones (first one is level 5). Like PQ, you get a batch of upgrade points per level and you can distribute them however you want.

IF THAT WASN'T ENOUGH: 7-slot inventory system, with item sets that bestow bonuses. An achievement system called "Honors" which will give you additional items. A card system, which does little other than unlock Honors (as best I can tell). The save rooms on the SOTN map are now "Safe Rooms", which restore your HP, let you shop, and let you warp between previously visited ones. Facebook integration for leaderboards. And Arcade Mode, in case you don't have time to dig into Story Mode.

One last note: I'm playing on an iPad and it looks great at 2x. So iPad owners shouldn't wait for a native version because I don't know what the point would be.

So basically it's Puzzle Metroidvania and you should buy it immediately.

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED FOR: Puzzle Quest fans, Castlevania fans, Metroidvania fans, people who like fun.
Thanks...

I really want Zen Bound 2 but as of last night, my iPhone will no longer let me play paid apps :(
....
I got this sorted in the end. I had to do a full reset of all data & settings on the phone :(

Now to pick up Space Harrier, Zen Bound 2, Castlevania & Let's Golf 2!

Anyone know when Secret of Mana is coming to the iPhone?

My first game was EspGaluda II, currently my favorite game this year. :D

Battle for Wesnoth

Super Quickhook
Edge
Espgaluda 2
Jet Car Stunts (especially if you're getting an iPhone4)
Hellsing's Fire

Some of the best out there, but there are still plenty of other great games.

Thanks, some of the games you guys posted look pretty solid. Also kinda interested in Geometry wars and Pacman CE on Iphone. Do those control well?

They're not bad. Geo Wars takes some time to get used to, but it works. With the right control scheme Pacman CE can also play very well. Definitely solid.

Both also operate at 60 fps (like Super Quickhook and Espgaluda 2 above), which helps.

Angry Birds (Should've just listed this one 5 times)
Flight Control
Fruit Ninja
Mobigames 'Edge'
Phoenix Wright AA (if you've never played it)

Then there's Peggle & PvZ which both live on my home screen but you'll probably already own on another format.

If you're interested in Geometry Wars, you'd be better off buying Isotope: A Space Shooter. It's pretty much GeoWars with RPG elements and is €1.69 as opposed to €3.99. I bought both recently and am having way more fun with Isotope.

Donut Games' "Crazy Summer" has made three games free, including "Cat Physics" which is apparently good.

http://toucharcade.com/2010/07/23/three-free-titles-during-donut-games-crazy-summer/

Speaking of Donut games, if you haven't tried it, fans of challenging games should give Action Buggy a shot.... It's a sidescroller that randomly generates, so it's different every time. To me, it's similar to Robot Unicorn Attack with better game mechanics and way weaker music. I think it's 0.99... I've poured well over 10 hours into it which is beyond ridiculous for such a simple game.

I just bought AirAttack for 99c and really enjoyed it. I think it's the most satisfying airplane shooter type game I've played on iPhone. The controls work really well, there is a shop for buying upgrades, and it looks great.
That's AirAttack, with no space. There is a lite version if anyone wants to try it out...

pixn love rush controls arent anywhere near as bad as some people were claiming. What the hell, guys? How else do you expect to move a character on screen from left to right other than a slider?

My gripe is with the jump/shoot buttons. They should be closer together, or perhaps jump should be a button, and if you tap the screen, you shoot. *shrug*
