I'm annoyed that developers aren't updating their icons for the higher res. When an app is updating on the iPhone and has the blue bar, while it's updating you can see it's using the iTunes high res app icon, but when it finishes, it goes back to the low res icon. Even if an app isn't being updated for Retina, at least the icon should be updated. Doesn't take any effort yet it's being completely ignored. Annoys the hell out of me.
Agreed. Should've been done weeks ago for all apps.

:lol man i thought i was the only one who was annoyed by this as well. glad there are other anal folks out there to share my disdain.

Does a restore from backup really seamlessly put my app data back? I'm considering it but a bit afraid of it...

After iOS4, several games just have sliiiightly less smooth framerates than before on my 3GS. Most notably: Need For Speed: Shift, Ozone (there's a tiny 'jerk' every second or so now, ruins the elegance of the game), Castle of Magic (this one is heavily affected I think), Pix'n'Love Rush.

If any of you experience the same and have tried restore from backup, lemme know how it works!

(damn I hope 4.1 brings significant performance improvements, would be lovely)

restore from backup brings EVERYTHING back.

everything.

Anyone know where iTunes backs up your apps to? The encrypted iphone data I found in the users > apple > roaming > etc etc, but that's only like 100+ megs, I'm having trouble figuring out where all the rest of it is.

Well, it can't be everything... Since it doesn't bring back apps for example, right? (those have to be brought back by syncing?)

I'm just trying to assess just how likely it is that a restore-from-backup fixes these kinds of issues (if they are fixable).

the restore backs up the pref files of the apps. save data or files saved from the app. the app itself is only referenced by the backup and is reloaded onto the iPhone from the main app directory in your iTunes folder.

that will account for the smaller size of the backup.

If you backup and then restore, then yes. Even saved data from your apps will be restored.

The only things that don't seem to get restored are passwords (for mail, etc) and maybe some other small settings/preferences. I've had to backup and restore a few times lately, and even going from a 3G to an iPhone 4 it was no problem.

Quick question for all: was playing the latest Fruit Ninja on my 3GS last night before going to bed. Went to the home screen, pushed the power button to lock it and there was 70% battery. Woke up today and the battery was COMPLETELY flat, barely 7 hours later. Any idea why this would happen? Memory leak or something else?

It's happened once before but I can't remember the exact circumstances. Did my head in :(

I noticed the same thing with Miner Disturbance. If I don't manually shut it it eats the battery even when not being played :(

Having said that, I'm not squarely blaming Fruit Ninja (or any other software... could be the OS) but it was the last thing I downloaded and played on my phone right before going to bed.

Does anyone know if you still have a flat battery the alarm still works? I have a feeling that one day this bug, wherever it's coming from, will fuck me squarely in the arse.

Assassins Creed just got a Retina update. :)

Gameloft slowly getting through their games it seems.

Great! Say what you will about Gameloft and their lack of originality, but they support their games, and you're more likely than not to get your money's worth. I'm looking forward to the Dungeon Hunter Retina update.

Bejeweled 2 has been updated to add Boosts and Coins to Blitz mode. Looks like it's on par with the facebook version now.

And Asphalt 5 is now 0.99$! Just got it... Not a fan myself though. Typical Gameloft lack of polish, way-below-ideal framerate and as always with Gameloft, the graphics are either a hit (nicely textured, crispy and reasonable geometry) or a miss (PS1 gfx + overdone bloom filter). It's a miss on this one imo.

edit: I take that back... Partially... Got used to the framerate (which isn't THAT bad) and seems like there might be a great game in there. Graphics also are not bad, just a strange mixed bag, some of it is excellent, some of it is really low-res/low-poly.

edit: oh, I picked up Dominion not too long ago. It's a Risk-like turn-based game with the multiplayer apparently set up the same way as in Carcassonne (take your turn whenever, where ever, notifications, multiple games at once). I haven't really looked in to it too much, but the ''reviews on the App Store'' seem to be mostly positive. Because of Carcassonne (and to a lesser extent Phoenix Wright and iBooks) I didn't really have time to play it yet.

Will report back in a few days.

You tease!

I thought maybe Dominion( the card game) was actually available. I really, really want that.

$30 PSP RPG Crimson Gem Saga just came out for $10. Surely straight in as best iPhone RPG.
I'm surprised that it wasn't released by Atlus directly. Anyone know if it uses their localization, or the earlier and terrible English script used in the Asian release?

Yeah, I will purchase this if it's a good port, but I can't find impressions anywhere. The app store description is in ridiculous engrish, which makes me fearful.

Yep. Not very promising.

Impressions here:

Seems like the port has some issues (sensitivity and graphics), but the translation is fine.

Actually reading through most of that thread it seems the impressions are overall extremely positive, the graphics issues are minor sprite clipping issues, which don't sound like a terribly bad thing. Glad to hear the translation is as good as one could hope, I'll have to add it to my list now!

Why don't you just plug it in every night? That's that I think most people do. If you use it as an alarm, plug it in beside your bed.

main_ss.png

Has been released for free (and nonfree $.99)
That's little game where you want to eat brains and not get shotgunned.
Paid version includes up to 8 players (free is 2p only with CPU) with with other people on one iDevice, and you can add little challenge to the game by making zombies smarter (which equals to cheating in rolling dices I assume).
Fun game. Not as fun as real dices + beer but hell, it's free (or almost free).

I loved CGS when it first came out even though it got luke-warm reviews but I never got a chance to finish this so, yeah, awesome. I'll be 2x'ing it on the iPad, I'll post back later about how well it scales.

FWIW, CGS got 30 in Famitsu when it came out in Japan for the PSP (it was called Garnet Chronicle and published by Sega). Not a bad score. Ranks alongside the Ys and Eiyuu Densetsu RPGs for PSP. I'm gonna pick it up and check it out anyway.

3GS is significantly faster, could be why. I think the plants vs zombies load time comparison video puts the 3G at around 30 seconds, and the 3GS at around 8 seconds, 4x faster.
RAM is a more likely reason, particularly if Game Center has background functions (other than the other background stuff like notifications)...but yeah the 3G is slow as hell too.

I saw a screenshot of the beta 3 changelog. I wouldn't call it a rumor now, tbh.
I heard it was in there as a "known issue", do you remember the exact wording of what it said?

this thread, post 22. it’s an attachment.

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=984563

line says: “NEW: In this release Game Center is no longer supported on iPhone 3G and 2nd generation iPod touch"

The CGS port is good. Controls could be tightened up a bit and there are a few sound issues, but nothing bothersome. Seems like a good 16-bit rpg, way better than something like Zenonia (good production values as well). Translation seems to be Atlus', it's good.

oh FFS, CGS finally installs and what do I see? "Crims...Saga". Surely they didn't think Crimson Gem Saga would fit under the icon!?

I hate apps with .... in the name, none of them will ever make it to the first page of my iDevice, no matter how good the game or how often I play it.

Osmos is out for the iPhone. I'm really enjoying it so far, great game. It's a bit like Flow, but original, not a complete ripoff like that one iPhone game (name?)

Wow, really enjoying Osmos so far. I made that Flow comparison after just the first two levels, but this game is much much better than Flow.

Can't you rename the apps?

Nope, seems like a big overlook by Apple, hopefully they address it in a future update. You can obviously rename folders, but not apps. Won't bother me at all, since all my games go in folders, but it is stupid of them to leave the ... in there.
