The "Official" Japanese PSP Launch Thread (NSF56k)

Not sure. I could've asked the hot girls working the floor, but they probably wouldn't have known either (they spent over ten minutes trying to figure out how to start up a DVD on the PSX when I demoed it there last year, only to realize that the system didn't even have a DVD inside).

:lol.

EDIT: play-asia server got served it seems. wont load anymore.
EDIT 2: Nm. Works fine now.

Just watched some of Playasia's vids. Ridge Racers is some of the games intro. Even though the music is downsampled alot in their vids as they say, its still really good. I still don't know what to make of MG:A, they make it seem fast paced in the vids which would make me happy. The unveiling of the Metal Gear at the end looks really slick though.

The server seems like it died out again (i'm trying to grab the Vampire Savior and Legend of Heroes vids now).

Question: is there a dock accessory that's going to come out, or has one been announced? The pictures of the bottom of the PSP sure seem like it would lend itself to a dock well.

IIRC it has not been announced yet (probably in order to avoid a bad "me drain batteries very fast" perception), but yes, it seems like the PSP would fit a dock eventually.

Just looked at the pics again and noticed that what I thought was the bottom is actually the top of the PSP (with the USB port). The bottom of the unit doesn't actually look like it would fit in a dock, so I wonder how/if they plan on doing something with the top (it just looks like it lends itself to a dock well with the two outer holes + USB port + charging(?) contacts).

Anyways, I wasn't too hot for the PSP early on but after seeing these pics and now learning that it can play movies off the memory stick...well, I'm kicking myself for not trying to jump on a pre-order import from awhile back.

The more I see those vids the more I feel dumb for not having preordered one...I can only hope first units have HW problems to feel better. (not that I wish this for our fellow GA Japan crew ;) )

I was thinking the other day that I don't know anyone in Japan who hasn't had a Sony employee blab the battery specs to them. Sony really needs to hire better ninjas.
To be fair I base my observations on tests I ran myself so far - hence why I have to be cryptic about it ;)
Second hand info from Sony can be fine, but not something I trust without a specific context.

Cant you talk about this now, when people actually have PSP's? :P

Dont have time to recreate what they have posted, go HERE

They have full system impressions, pictures and videos. My post HAD all of it but got messed up :(

I think I heard somewhere that Garghev Trilogy has been confirmed for the US... that and Lumines are the 2 games I'm mostly hyped for...

Is there anything official about to that effect?
Yeah.

In the accompanying technical specs the battery life was estimated as 4-6 hours for gaming and 4-5 hours for video playback. These measurements were taken with the backlit screen at medium luminance with volume at half level, headphones in use and the wireless LAN feature not in use, and Sony were quick to admit that any variation to this standard would affect power drain. Games that use many of the system's optional features like the wireless LAN, or require the processor to work overtime, will drain the battery especially quickly.

I have never even wanted a handheld after I had the GameGear, I just don't have the lifestyle that encourages handheld gaming, but DAAAAMN this thread, and the videos have me drooling over the SEXY that is the PSP. Geez!!

I finally got those videos working. I must say, the system interface is really really slick. Oh wow and I love sharp video looks. Amazing.

Not it's not, and the games cost 50 bucks.

I believe this has been answered reasonably in this thread, but I would like to emphasize it so that nobody asks this question again.

No, it's not region-locked. Source

IGN said:
PSP adopts both a "worldwide" and "regional" code system," explains Molly Smith of SCE America. "For games on PSP there is no region code. However, due to language and system issues, quality assurance procedures are done in each territory. Therefore, we recommend purchasing both the hardware and corresponding software in the same market/territory."

As for the games being 50 dollars; most are priced in the range of DS games. Lumines, for instance, is 3800 yen.

Anyway, wow, this thread suddenly got a wealth of info and stuff. I'm going to be lovin' this.

I'm really concerned about the excessive load time when you use the UMD medium.
If you restart it 3800 times, you'll lose 1 hour of gameplay.

Weak Sony... Weak...

I finally got through all the videos.. and I must say. I'm more hyped about this thing then ever before. God I hope the us launch is SOON and I have the money on hand to pick this up. Some of those games just look downright amazing coming off the screen. My god, I have to get one. I just wish the sound in the videos was much clearer so we can get the full effect.

But damn, I dunno what impressed me the most, but I'm definitely feeling the hype now.

According to IGN, Ridge Racers has single disc multiplayer!! Can anyone read this and make sure I'm understanding this...

IGN said:
When we selected Game Share, the PSP went on a search for other players, but gave up when it found none. On this Game Share mode, while choosing the mode itself didn't offer any explanation besides its title, the semi-self-explanatory nature of what it was doing and what it's called shows that the PSP can offer multiplayer gamers the same one-game, many-players feature offered in some DS and GBA titles. Ridge Racers is the first game we've found so far to offer this unannounced multiplayer feature where only one system needs the game, but we weren't able to convince any of the other players hogging the demo systems to try it out with us.

:o

Sweet! Now the question is...will I look like a total geek if i have a DS on my left pocket and a PSP in my right pocket?

Obviously, once you use Pictochat to find people to play on your PSP the DS will be in your pocket, so people won't even know.

Time for America's favorite new daytime game show...."IS THIS GUY SERIOUS?!"

Play along with our panel of "celebrity" guests as they try to decide whether an angry message board poster is legitimately complaining, or parodying others' desperate trolling.

Whoopi Goldberg: Oh honey chile, of course nubbe's jokin' wit' you! Don't nobody care about playin some game 3800 times.

Harvey Fierstein: Oh no, he's dead serious. I think about the same issues when it comes to whatever cliched flambuoyantly gay activity I'm engaging it. Did you know that over the last 3800 times I called my mother, I lost an hour of talk time while waiting for her to pick up?

Louie Anderson: LOUIE HUNGRY!

Reiko's eyes on the Ridge intro. She's practically enticing you to grab that PSP and pump that pad hard to give her some satisfaction. :O

If confirmed, looks like GreenGiant has egg on his face :lol
:lol For the time being he did. :( No hard feelings though to him, he's got the sexist avatar on the board so I can't hate him. <3 :P

But anywho, I have only two concerns now for the system. The load times *dodges fire* and maybe I'm the only one who noticed, but the loudness of the disc access, especially in the music video video. These aren't huge concerns at all for me personally, just minor nitpicks. But overalll, damn I loving this system. I had no clue at all about Armored Core, and it just looks grand in motion. It's going to be a pain waiting around till *hopefully* March or earlier.

Oh, btw, it looks like IGN might have temporarily removed that statement until they get better confirmation from their Japan correspondents...

Yeah, that's what I meant, "for the time being" was a horrible choice of words though. As it doesn't even make since. But anywho. :P

On the issue of colored PSPs, Sony has shown different color PSPs in the past. As of this point they don't have any plans to put them up for retail... but like colored PS2s, expect it to happen eventually.
