The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

So I'm playing the death toll campaign on expert for the 1st time today online. My team gets ravaged but we start making progress slowly but surely. At one point we ran into a tank and since I was ahead I made a run for the safe room (the other 3 players were screwed, they wouldn't have made it anyway) and I make it just barely.

This of course leads to the Church section which begins in a train yard. We do this section a couple of times b/c the zombies keep overrunning us and a hunter or boomer messes us up. Now, eventually during one of our retries we run into a Tank and we all high tail it back to the safe room on the train and we manage to kill the tank (red steel door FTW ). Still we end up retrying since things go wrong later on. Anyways we run into a tank again and make a run back for the safe room. Hell if he couldn't open the door, we'll be able to make it through this time right?

Wrong. Dead wrong. The tank decides to throw some pavement at us like he did before but this time he throws it right at the red steel door completely obliterating it. We start freaking out at this point ('oh bullshit!' 'h4x!') and we get wiped out. I love this game :D

Just got the game from steam today, awfully overprised, but hell if I could help myself, even though I got an ordered copy arriving on monday. Guess I gotta try and sell that one on.

But I gotta say I'm completely in love with this game, We spent around 6 hours maiming through the no mercy campaign tonight, but hell, we couldn't complete the last mission no matter how many times we tried.
Admittedly we suck, we got one decent fps:er and one average (me) and then a semi-rookie (too upset about minor details to play good)
Then we got one AI which we use for cannon fodder.

But I have to ask, is the last mission on no mercy difficult on advanced or is there a trick to it?

The last chapters in every campaign are generally the most difficult. That's when you answer the radio to get your rescue to come down and get you, and the game unleashes swarms of zombies on you both before the rescue arrives and after they do. In my experience, when/if people die in the game, it's usually when rescue arrives and we're all running towards it. Sometimes someone ends up getting swarmed by a horde or destroyed by a Tank before getting to the escape.

God dammit.
I hate this matchmaking.

Why does it complain about trying to join LAN servers when I'm on the internet? Why does it fail and yell 'Game is Full' when I Just hit find 'online game'? Why not just find another one, then? It's not like I was looking for a specific one.

Why is it that I can't browse a list of my most recently played on servers, in case I'm booted off? I just lost the connection for 30 seconds, but it meant I was kicked out of the game. Going into my 'previous players' tab and bringing up the community page for the players I was with I tried to join back in through the 'join game' link, but it keeps passing a null value to Left4Dead.

I then opened up the console and looked back to when I initially made the connection with the game and found the ip address, then opened up the server browser and tried connecting through that, but it had been 5 minutes by that point and another player had already joined.

And it was the FIRST good team I'd come across in ages. I can never get through the sewers of No Mercy because my teams has at least one person that is utterly incompetent.

PC noob here. any way to get the demo, even just a single player demo? or is it gone forever?
Valve pulled it. The first taste is always free, but if you get hooked, you have to pay. I kind of admire Valve's swagger. They've been throwing their full support behind this title and it shows.

All right, just wanna explain on Blood Harvest, when I said to run into the barn, I was expecting the barn that was in Co-op. Not the shithole that's in versus.

i do slate the game an awful lot for its solitary? flaw, which is the matchmaking is utterly abysmal, but its certainly the best fps game released this year, even better than my favourite shooter series crysis warhead/wars, although if quakelive had released this year it would be a different story

please fix the online backend...quickly

I just wish there was a ping/bar marker next to your Friend's list of games. I'll settle for small improvements.

Sure, you can pull the friend tab up and look manually, but that usually will lose you the slot.

In a game of versus today, a tank spawns and my team decides to bolt for the safe room at the end of the level. Well, there was a horde of zombies blocking the way and the tank comes in the safe room right as the last person comes in and before we can close the door. :lol We ended up killing it though and beating the level.

Whats the difference? I just did it on versus and didn't notice anything really changed.

Argh.

I really can't decide between PC and 360.

I thought I had my mind made up by deciding to buy the 360 now, play with my friends for the, oh, month they'll play, then trading it in and buying the PC version. But now that I'm thinking on it, it seems like that will be a pretty big waste of money just to play with a few friends. Say, $60 to buy 360 L4D, then trading it in I'll get like, $20 maybe. Then buying the PC version, maybe by then there will be a Christmas sale and it'll be only $40, and I buy that. That's 80 damn dollars just have the best of both worlds of L4D.

What else should stop us copying the retail levels into the demo folder? Goodwill?
Does that work? I mean that's never been an issue for any other multiplayer FPS demo that's ever been released. What makes Left 4 Dead any different?

love this game so much.

had some seriously lopsided matches in verses. like 4000 to 200 by the time it was done.

i've been lucky enough to get good teams where everyone has a mic :lol

Did Valve really pull the demo? What an incredibly odd thing to do.
I downloaded the demo when it went live for all, and I just now tried to play it but it updated and locked itself. It said it was a preload and I needed to buy the full game.... wtf
I just wanna see if it will run on my computer.

People were doing it as the demo was still going. Did you see the L4D de_dust videos?

You more or less just needed to copy all the stuff from other source games into the demo folder and you had dozens of new maps ready without any work. A bit too easy.

In the end Valve should have pulled a bit more effort into the demo in this regard, but I do expect free weekends like with TF2 for people, who want to test it out.

But....but...I only modded the demo! :P

Do you have any part of the Orange Box? It doesn't do anything more intensive than that.

If not, download Portal First Slice either here: http://www.steampowered.com/nvidia/ or http://store.steampowered.com/app/410/

Edit: I swear I updated this before I saw the post beneath me!

Here, this demo has very similar requirements to Left4Dead:
Portal: First Slice

It was such a great compelling demo. It was right up there with the BF1942 demo, or Q3Test. The kind of demo that gets you excited as hell about a game.

Can't think of any reason Valve wouldn't want people playing the demo. Easily the best way to advertise the game to prospective buyers.

I'm sure some of the Valve sycophants will defend this, but it is just straight up weak.

I mean I don't really care because I already own the game and it is easily GOTY2008, but still. I feel for any man on the fence who can't make up his mind because Valve can't figure a way to make the demo just two levels.

Does anyone else get crazy CS nostalgia playing this game? Nostalgia might not be the right word, since it hasn't exactly been years since I last played CS. But the gunplay, especially the crouching and tapping out of headshots with the assault rifle... de_dust is in L4D, alright.

Wikipedia said that friendly fire is off on Easy difficulty, so a couple guys and I decided to do No Mercy on Easy, since a couple of us were missing the 'beat No Mercy without dying' thingy. Well, FF doesn't hurt you, but it still counts, so no go on that. I did beat the campaign without healing, so I got that, and I should have gotten 'never get incapacitated', but a Tank threw a rock at me while I was IN THE HELICOPTER at the finale and knocked me down, so I didn't get it. :lol

Still haven't gotten a good screenshot of a witch looking at me, either. And I killed one in 2 shotgun blasts, so robbed.

Well many people made a quick first judgement after playing alone and hated it, but loved it with multiplayer. So if someone boots up the demo and only plays singleplayer, because no one is around, then Valve could easily lose sales because of the demo!

/Valve sycophant

Good enough? :D

I'm more surprised that they also pulled the x360 demo as far as I understand. That's just.....pointless.

I don't even think it's about the mods. They're trying to create more demand for the game by making it a scarcity. Some people might be happy just playing the demo since it has multiplayer and a ton of replay value.

They pulled the 360 demo? was that why I was also unable to redownload it?

Just don't do the staple 'duck jump' from CS sometimes, that screws me over on some parts when I am jumping across to something..your jump distance is nerfed; it gets me so many times. :lol

Black friday at Gamestop will have it for 50 bucks, so only 10 bucks off but that is 10 bucks that you save.

I have portal, HL2-all, and TF2. None are indicators of this game.

Why not? If the goal is to see if it will run on your system, TF2 will serve nearly the exact function. If that game barely runs on your system on low settings, then I can see how you may be concerned.

I will agree: Valve should have left the demo up. However, to be totally fair, I would probably still be playing the demo right now rather than the full release, so I see why the may have done it.

I went through death toll with a few other people and we only used medkits as weapons until the final stand (normal difficulty.) The only reason we finally broke down and used guns on the last part was because we could always get the first tank down but another one would always spawn and we never had enough health to get him down at that point. It felt pretty awesome though.

It's nothing like CounterStrike. For one, the players don't all request a map change whenever we enter an office.

My first full length Versus game was awesome. Thanks to whoever was participating. Good times.

Yes good times indeed. Stuttering.. annoyances aside it was the best round of versus I've played yet.

I've just played the game for about fifteen minutes because I had to go somewhere, but those fifteen minutes were a blast. Zombies were easy (because it was the beginning of the first level), but guns felt right (at least the two I got to try). I love the fact that the pistol has infinite ammo, I'm getting so annoyed by not having all the ammo I need/want to shoot in recent shooters I've been playing (Far Cry 2 and Bioshock) that having this change is for good.

Ohh and also, the game looks a lot better than what it is credited for. Shadows look great and the game is really sharp overall. I believe I'm running the game at max settings, since the Source engine is pretty easy-going overall.

Kind of got the avatar I wanted, but my gun was in the way I think. Will have to try again.

I killed the witch via the gas station explosion, and it didn't count as no damage or one shot. :lol

I think dmczaf inadvertently showed me a way to kill witches easy if they're in the way; get next to a ladder and shoot her, then get halfway up the ladder so the witch goes up too, and she doesn't attack you so the other team members then shoot her on the ladder. Will have to try again to verify. May be useful though.

Umm, played Death Toll online just now and got stuck with some guy who was humping a dead zombie that doubled over. That's right--zombie doggy style. Then he looks at me like I'm either supposed to join in or get the hell out of there.

:lol That's like in the hospital where a zombie was on a hospital bed, so I shot it off the bed, but my shot hit it right in its buttcrack.

A batch of survivors greedy for multipliers got screwed over trying to rescue each other in the most awesome vs. match I've played yet.

Two were waiting at the end in a room in Blood Harvest and the third was being thrashed by a hunter right outside, one(nearly dead) francis slowly creeped out and I snagged him with my tongue, and then a boomer barfed inside on the other one, who then was rushed before he could close the door. The hunter didn't take long to get in there, and then I not only got the Lamb 2 Slaughter achievement, they ended up losing and just left the game after that. :lol

Just got done with a match with 3 completely random people on Live and had an absolute fucking blast. I've never played with 3 random people who after some trial and error started really play well together. Communication, coordinated fire, I didn't know that could happen on xbox live. :P Played through the last part of Blood Harvest and all of Death toll on advance. Damn that was fun! :D

So I started playing tonight at 7 or so...I just turned it off thinking it was about 10 oclock...nope. It's 1 am and my fiance is sleeping on the couch. I kinda feel like a dick but holy shit this game is amazing.
