There is no way in hell can Valve pull that off. Maybe another company could. But these were the guys that though they could have all three half life episodes out by the end of 2007... :lol They make an awesome product, but it takes them a while.

PC version will be overflowing with content in a month or two. Unfortunately without an emphasis on a server browser it's going to be very random. You will find yourself joining servers where the zombies move slow and require headshots, all the counterstrike weapons will be buyable and you'll earn money from every zombie kill, and there will be poorly implemented experience systems to earn rpg stats where you can boost your speed to 60mph while running, regenerate ammo and health over time, and make expert mode zombies do 1 damage per hit to you.

There's gonna be a lot of crap, but some amazing stuff as well.

What your speaking of is Mods? or DLC from Valve?

Maybe they can add a way to 'register' a mod in the menu, so if you like a mod you can easily find servers hosting it. That would go a long way towards decoupling mods from servers, which could help prevent the online community from getting splintered.

I really hope Left 4 Dead stays in the top10 Live Activity charts for a long time. It really deserves it, and would improve the odds of good DLC support.

Valve says they had to submit the final game 1.5 months before release date for Microsoft certification and printing of discs. I hope they've been working on a new campaign during that time, based in a different type of setting, and supporting Versus.

Yeah, after playing RE5 demo, I just want to say how much I appreciate this game. The co-op factor seems much more robust.

Love it and will continue playing it after I burn through my backlog.

Why'd they cut the rain out of No Mercy? It looks awesome ='(

They didn't cut the rain. It happens, it's just random/controlled by the AI director. At least, I've seen lightning/rain during Level 4 of No Mercy.

I've seen lightning but no actual rain unless thats falls under "Very High" on the shaders or something

hmm, maybe I'm wrong.

I do have everything maxed, but I don't really remember.

This is moronic, by the way.
Failed attempts to join games should be invisible to the end user, not kick you back to the main menu and reset your search settings.

YES... it should just keep trying until it finds one.

Here is my short wish list (I could make this much, much longer), but this is realistic stuff I think they could probably do:

Slight variants in standard infected... Legless ones that crawl after you, military or police SWAT infected with body armor and helmets that can absorb more damage, different heights, etc.

Barricades - you pick up an item (pile of boards for instance) and can use it on a closed door like you would a health kit on a person (hold down the melee button for a few seconds), afterwards the door is strengthened to be 5x as strong as normal (standard boss infected take 15 hits to break it).

Bring back the screamer (boss infected in a straightjacket that they cut from the game), give him an area effect disorient attack... haven't worked out the details but his main purpose would be to give closet camping players a harder time without totally fucking them over (mainly give them incentive to leave the closet to go kill it).

More weapons - even slight variants would do fine. Have the assault rifle occasionally be an AK-47, have the uzi occasionally be an mp5 or a mac 10. Snub nose revolvers, Steyr machine pistols (dual wield mini-uzis), Sawed off shotguns that only have two shots, .50 cal sniper rifle that holds one shot but does massive damage to the tank or witch at range. Special pistols have limited ammo but once expended you revert to the normal pistol. Randomize what we get so that players have to work with what is available rather than a fixed selection.

More survivors - It's cool that they developed 4 unique personalities, but I would love to see a larger pool of survivors, and each time you rescue someone, they take on the role of a new character that has been found. Seeing Bill die and then finding him in a closet 5 minutes later doesn't really lend itself to the narrative that this game is trying to create on the fly.

A good random level generator is probably too much to ask for with the source engine. Although generating random city streets and buildings to wander through is certainly doable (didn't Hellgate London do this?). Trick is to make enough 'pieces' to construct the world from that it doesn't end up being streets bordered by dozens of the exact same burnt out building every single time you play (like Hellgate London...)

maybe game has really short legs? Me a couple friends played the shit out of this game last week and had a blast, but after finishing each campaign several times its starting to get stale. Only four levels can get old. This game needs DLC every month to keep it going as long as TF2 IMO.
Once again, Left 4 Dead's community now, a couple weeks after release as the initial HYPE HYPE HYPE is still larger than Team Fortress 2's ever was.

There are over 21,000 people playing right this second, and that's today's peak so far - it may still go up as people get off work and such. That number is right up there with where the game was at launch.

Earlier this week daily peeks were around 18,000. Just a simple matter of more people having busy work weeks.

I enjoy versus. I do.

But I'm not a fan of No Mercy. Levels 1, 3, and 5 are fun. But 2 and 4 are boring. (I should stress this is as infected only.)

In contrast, I like all of Blood Harvest.

EDIT: I totally can't wait for the update that brings Death Toll vs.

ALSO: I totally want someone to mod the game for hunter races.

FURTHERMORE: I kind of wish hunters would stick to walls for just a second (or a half-second) for to make wall-jumping easier for the lay person. i.e., me.

Finally was able to pick this game up. I am having a blast with it, vs is a lot of fun when all 8 players are in a NXE chat talking with each other. Yea making strategies suffers but talking trash to your buddy while you are eating his brains and there is no one around to help him is hilarious :lol

TJ Capt Blood is my gamertag if anyone in here would like to get some games in at sometime please send me a friend request and say you are from gaf :)

Orange Box sold millions on PC alone and Team Fortress 2 was never higher than Left 4 Dead is now. You just misunderstand just how incredibly popular Counter-Strike is.

The game will be incredibly successful on PC. Have no feat about that.

Orange Box also came with 2 other games. I'm sure most people bought Orange Box for Half Life 2 and not because of Team Fortress 2. I really doubt L4D sold more than 400k on PC. I think the 360 version will even outsell it.

Oh and they still haven't fixed the other issue I have with some servers forcing me to play in Versus mode when I chose campaign in Lobby.

Yeah i want to know as well. I'm not sure I'm seeing any detriments to boomers right now, unless there was some kind of exploit/trick that I wasn't aware of.

You could bind a key to /explode or whatever the selfkill command is. This allows boomers to instantly explode, which I guess works even if survivors are trying to melee you. It's also hilarious if a person does this bind and then accidentally uses it as a human, thus instantly killing themselves.

Yeah this is embarrassing as hell. I bind my kill key to 'g' and I will totally kill myself as a survivor sometimes during a frantic reload :(

Just had a really great No Mercy versus game with with some random pubbers. My team made a habit of sprinting through the levels at top speed which was successful with varying degrees of effectiveness (we survived the sewers only because I managed to sneak behind and then outrun a tank :D) up until the finale. Our zombie tactics were fairly well coordinated and we managed to take them down on the middle three maps. We still ended up spending most of the game trying to play catchup with the enemy team's score, but our hospital run was a total success compared to their total failure, which tipped the scales in our favor. Very balanced, very intense, tons of fun.

You know what I hate? Making it 4/5 through an expert campaign when whatever random server you're own dies and kicks everyone off.

Yet Team Fortress 2 was sold individually, and skyrocketed to the top of Steam sales charts over and over and over again on each new content release. Team Fortress 2 has easily sold millions - stand-alone copies combined with Orange Box copies - yet its concurrent numbers have never reached as high as Left 4 Dead is now.

People were saying the same thing about Orange Box last year, blindly assuming that it would sell more on 360 just because it's on console. Of course, Orange Box went on to sell around 1.5 million total on 360+PS3, but far, far more than that on PC alone.

Only 400k on PC? No way in hell it's sold that few copies. I really don't understand where anyone could possibly be getting this pessimism from. There is no evidence whatsoever to put Left 4 Dead as being any less successful than Orange Box was.

The game has been incredibly successful, is still immensely popular today, and will continue to have legs for a very, very long time.

So what's the stand-alone sold for Team Fortress then? How many copies do you think L4D has sold so far for the PC?

Edit : Aww crap, new update. No more easy witch killing.
Left 4 Dead

Fixed Infected Players melee pushing large objects to block the survivors path

Fixed +lobby exploit

Fixed exploit of "hugging" the Witch from behind where she can't hit you

Fixed players not being kicked from a vote by changing their name before it succeeds

Disabled difficulty change votes from the console in versus mode

Just had a good Death Toll campaign with Daigoro, sonicspear, and Rogue 5. Everybody lived at the end (took a couple tries), and they all got cr0wnd as well. Sorry about my ping being crappy early on and stuff.

Anyone up for the last campaign I haven't survived, Blood Harvest? If I start it, I should do it now rather than much later tonight.

my first impression since i had little time to play yesterday because i just build that computer: we were playing the campaign from the demo on normal and we made it to the rescue zone with the helicopter but then we fu**** up and the second tank killed our whole team with a massive zombieflood that came with him :lol but it was great fun and i hope i will finish this campaign today when iam back at home :D

Just played a round of terrible games where certain teamates kept trying to blame me after they fucked up. Sooo annoying, I hope we'll be able to get some good gaf versus games going soon.

If you want a mediocre to decent teammate (I'd like to think) I'd be up for an expert campaign tomorrow afternoon maybe. Hey, if I accidentally shoot you, I'll at least acknowledge it and try to make it amusing!

Side note, I played another level with that unmutable Falco guy, and got blamed for running into his fire. Pretty sure I wasn't the only one he TKed though. >_> At least he piped down long enough for us to do the cheap rock trick and finish the death toll finale.

I love playing as the Boomer. People are so trigger happy when they see you they don't realise that they, and everyone else on their team, are standing right next to me and all get covered by my victory goo. Too bad the zombie hoard that follows acts more as a distraction than killing force.

I haven't met any griefing yet, which either means I've been lucky as heck, or people are too interested in killing zombies to bother pissing off friendlies. Oh, and I suggest listening to the Half Life soundtrack while playing the game. The tracks fit so well to the massacre.

Any AusGAFers who want to play on Sunday or later tonight, add me. EDIT: lol - on Kritz7. >_> whoops

Akimbo assassin, finally, hooray!

And I can confirm 100% that pipe bombs, molotovs, gas cans, propane tanks, and oxygen tanks don't ruin it. I used a wild assortment of them throughout the entire game.
I got this last night tooo, but goddamnit I went the whole way through No Mercy without touching any of the above, just to be sure.

Half life soundtrack? Sounds neat, but do you play it over top of L4D's music? I can't imagine turning it off; it's essential to guessing when a horde is coming, and also for knowing when a Tank is around.

Guy, I have a shotgun. No zombie hoard gonna get in the way of my music listening fun times. I'll punch that tank in the fucking face.

Found a thread for a Resident Evil themed campaign on l4dmaps.net.

Hey guys, i thought i'd turn this into a full post as i officially have some screenshots to show off to you guys. The details are as follows:

RESIDENT EVIL 2 Campaign - (Tentative Title)

The campaign places the four survivors on the abadoned streets of racoon city after a truck crashes into your car. You head on foot to the police station in hope of rescue.

The campaign is as follows

1.City - Get to the police station
2. RPD station - escape to the sewers because its overun
3. Sewers - Underground maze
4. Laboratory - Part 1
5. Laboratory finale (Train Escape)

This is all to be changed and i was wondering if the sewers really needs to be 1 map, whether i could do station & sewer - then station to lab. Not sure right now.

I've started planning the layout of the first & second level. The first level gives you a limited RE Style of weaponry. See HIGHLIGHTS section for details.

PLEASE NOTE : These screenshots may show purple textures, strange purple brick walls etc due to some texture issues. Sometimes the game seems to compile the brick walls fine, but this should all be sorted when the SDK is released. Please do not let this put you off, all buildings are mainly just 'place holders' you may see BIG BLOCK buildings, but they are only temporary whilst i lock the skybox in place.

EARLY WIP SCREENSHOTS - CITY STREETS

The stairs around the buiding that eventually leads you out into the street.

PLEASE NOTE: I have NOT added my custom models to the streets yet (signs etc)

HIGHLIGHTS
Using the entity for ammo / guns i have limited the count to 1. Therefore when you enter the gunshop and find a shotgun on the floor, IT IS THE ONLY ONE. You must work as a team and decide who gets the gun. You will also find a UZI and 1 or 2 pistols along the way. You must 'share' the guns accordingly between your team mates (i wouldnt reccomend this map on SP as the bots are greedy)

Designing to see if its possible to have multiple routes / safe rooms for the station.

General puzzles will be included in the station (ones that can be done solo, but are mainly simple things that shouldnt be hard to impliment (dont worry - no floating platforms or anything!)

I'm currently in the process of finishing the bounding areas of the map. Campaign poster to be added later when the RPD station is finished so i can use a ingame shot of the station for the cover rather than using a RE2 screenshot.

Thank you, leave comments and things, i will improve the quality of this map in the next week or so.

Cheers
