My laptop can handle L4D after all! Looks ugly as hell, but it runs! (Now I have to figure out why TF2 runs so shitty.)
Hmmm, my laptop can run TF2 pretty decently (albeit without HDR lighting and some of the other bells and whistles).

I might try the L4D demo on PC on Tuesday and see how it runs compared to the 360 (although my XBL friends list has effectively already made the decision for me).

Of course I'm busy busy busy with school until Friday afternoon, so I can't really play until then. BUT. I CAN PLAY COME FRIDAY AFTERNOON.

Do you have multicore? Read that Valve have optimized multicore support in this version of the source engine. Makes me hopeful that they fix the performance in TF2.

Letting GameStop email the codes was a bad choice...I would have preferred to just go pick up a code physically. Now I'm sitting here without a code, not knowing if or when I'll have one.

So playing with friends doesn't work right now? Got the "no dedicated servers available".......

Kinda silly.....

But the game itself is all kinds of awesome.

Yeah, the forced matchmaking is becoming a problem. I'm very happy for the option, but you need choice both ways.
I can't imagine how L4D mods (maps, characters, etc) can work without a server browser. The finished game will almost certainly have one.

Mine used to until I installed Vista.

Shrug!

Who knows. I'll figure it out. Maybe it was just a fluke, I dunno. I only tried one night a couple weeks ago.

Give them a ring.

I had to call their 1-800 number last night for them to get me out another code. According to their systems I registered and was sent a code but never got it. After talking to someone they resent out the code last night and now I am downloading right now.

This... Oddly enough customer service usually takes care of problems like this. Anyways I'm going back to playing more 360 demo :D

:lol

Sounds like they built the net code around Xboxen and then back ended it into the PC version :lol

Oh dear....... Valve, how could you let this happen? Seriously, it's Valve. How did they let people down like that? This is a PC not a console, keep console style stuff on consoles and PC stuff on PCs.

:(

Well my laptop is running Vista too. Sadly it's always run Vista, so I have no comparison for how games would run under XP. But I don't do much gaming on PC anyway, just Source games (I played Orange Box on PC), Company of Heroes, and ScummVM. I can't run Bioshock for instance, and Crysis on lowest settings ran at ~15fps.

Are they going to need my transcation ID? I threw out my receipt but I can go down to the GameStop and get it if they need it. My trans number that is.

I had my receipt ready, but all they asked for was an email address.

Also, PC guys hurtin' over the forced matchmaking or whatever, hopefully that's just the case for the time being and a server list will be in place for the demo's general release on Tuesday.

Goddamnit this matchmaking on PC is bullshit. A quick match option is good enough, they don't need to force PC gamers to adopt an entirely new (and inferior) connection method. Server browsers are an integral part of online PC games and I am not happy with Valves decision to remove it.

360 and PC versions are identical gameplay wise if that comes as any surprise. Think I'm going to go with the 360 version if matchmaking is the same on both anyway.

it really is fucking awful, absolutely no way to search through a list of servers whatsoever, i was just in game with 3 japanese people, i don't wanna play with japanese people dammit i ping 300+ to japan, i wanna be able to choose a low ping euro server, of course the game never started anyway because there were no servers available

all dedicated servers are full, who knows how many they have as no one can tell, could be 5 for all i know :P

i'm sure the valve apologists will be in here soon but its terrible there's no other way around it, they've had 4? years to get this shit going, this demo isn't available to the masses just yet so they can't really blame unexpected high demand or something

clusterfuck

edit: having said all that, the game rocks in single player :)

WOW THIS GAME IS INCREDIBLE

people said the graphics were not so great? ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? I played on max AA/AF and everything on high and its so great! The little effects like saying your reloading and stuff all add to the atmosphere! Theres just so many other things I cant say right now because I want to go back in and play!

oh yea and play on expert the mobs are HUGE and VERY INTENSE

ok sorry I need to calm down lol, heres a pic

Demo runs horribly on my system at lowest settings. Is there any way to force it to look even worse so that it'll run at 30+ fps?

I don't think so. They were talking about how they have a new matchmaking system for Left 4 Dead and even showed some pics of the new lobbys and what not. But I didn't know they got rid of the server browser all together, that's just retarded.

I guess the design problem for them is that servers are generally only 4 players. That's a pretty small amount of people for one server. Think about how many servers you'd need to sustain a large community. They needed to optimise things somehow for the low amount of people per server ratio. So matchmaking was the most efficient way.

Screw em though, server list is better than this.

Will you guys chill the fuck out? Obviously these problems will be solved, and since they've talked at length about custom content, obviously a server browser will be around.

are there codes for early access for the pc version that don't involve pre-ordering on steam?

left 4 Dead from an online store is £25, steam it's £33. Stupid, money whoring valve.

Would you stop being a shill? How's valve supposed to know it's shit if we don't complain.

This whole thing totally snuck up on me. Has anyone gone out to preorder today? I'm curious if I'll still be able to get in, or if I'll have to wait for the 11th. (Man, Fallout totally distracted me from this one.)

Sorry to hear that. :(

You could probably try forcing DirectX7 or DirectX8 if the game supports it (as TF2 does). I forget the exact command, but you could probably google it. If you right click on the game in the games list, and click Properties, and then Launch Options, you can add it there. I think it may have been "-dx7" or "-dx8" (without the quotation marks).

It is silly. Joined/started another lobby and again no dedicated servers found. Probably all full or something....

ahaha the damn witch killed me.
am i the only one who hates the grain effect? good thing that you can turn it off. it also starts lagging a bit when all the zombies get spawned into the level. :-/

Ahee!

Please don't kill me.

Seems like it.

They better put the server browser back in or I'll cry.

It doesn't matter how many servers you need, since they're run by users, not by Valve.

A few screens for those who have to wait

When you load, you'll see this poster which shows each players Steam ID. I'm playing Single Player, so only one shows

You pick up guns off the table at the start, and medicine. That way, unlike the promotional material, Luis doesn't have to have an SMG, and Bill can't have an Assault Rifle until he finds one later in the level.

These are the other three characters.

Good hunting!

Looking great! Can't wait to get my hands on it. :D

However, I will strangle someone if I'm to be stuck with the pitifully inferior "matchmaking" bullshit. If I wanted worthless matchmaking I would have bought a 360.

Bwahahaha, this game is insane. My team of survivors just got mauled to death in the subway. I was almost resurrected, but the "boss" zombie with the lasso-tongue pulled my rescuer away to a grim fate.

It's one of the most intense, visceral games I've ever played, and I can't wait for the full experience.

TheGreatDave said:
Yeah. There's a list on the main menu of your friends in game, you can join available games.

So am I right in assuming that to get a full room of 4 friends together at this point someone needs to join an empty server (somehow). Then have 3 others hurry and join before the game auto-joins some random person?
