Dude, you've admitted to not even playing the game yet. Why have you made 2000 posts bitching about it already?

because i don't want the game i've been salivating for since its announcement to be crippled by a gimped networking system, and i want it fixed before release. just like the majority posters that are hating on it right now.

i have no desire to be at war with the single most important company in pc gaming right now, so i want to see this written off as a mistake or an oversight rather than a precedent.

Indeed. Good find.

I've decided not to get the PC version yet. Eventually, yes i'll get it, but the 360 is where all my friends are. Maybe the free demo on the 11th will change my mind.

Don't really see a major problem with the console style matchmaking on the PC... as long as it makes an effort to put you with other people you have good connections to.

If it consistently dumps you into games with bad connections then there is a problem, but i'm also fairly confident valve wouldn't leave us hanging for long if that turns out to be the case.

edit: that serverbrowser config found above is promising... ultimately I hope they have both a browser and a quickplay option.

What's the total filesize of the demo folder?

My download is going very slowly, and keeps getting interrupted (if I'm not careful, Steam thinks it's done when it isn't). Currently, my L4D Demo folder is at 787 MB. How big is it going to get?

All right so I pre-ordered on October 27th...Provided an email. Did not receive a code.
I tried using the GameStop site with my transaction id...Did not receive a code.

I'm dying over here GameStop, come on! I want to play L4D!

ACTIVATE PLAN B!

Get the 360 version then.

Those people are the only ones not throwing up a bitch fest in this thread

That's a real shame. If you can find out anything about how its set up, or even what router it is, then maybe let Valve know?

Yeah, Ill give that a shot.

Tragic though, this being the game I was most looking forward to this year.

I think I'm going to end up preferring matchmaking over a server browser for this game. If you only plan on playing with friends I think it makes the whole process a lot easier.

They'll probably activate the server browser for release. I can understand why they forced th demo to be matchmaking only. They probably wanted feedback and decided to test their system with the people who already purchased the game. If the demo would've came with the server browser enabled everyone would primarily using it.

my gf is in the same situation, i'm totally hoping it's resolved by making match making optional. it's the only reason i can think of that a source game would suddenly require port forwarding.

Really? I have the same card and was running 800x600 mid-low settings and it was only 20fps. Although when I closed it there was a "do you want windows to keep blocking L4D?" popup there, dunno how that would affect it, also lately my games like TF2 and CSS have been running slower than usual as well... :(
Yeah I'm quite disappointed with the performance myself. I have a Radeon x1950 Pro and while I get around 60fps in TF2 @ high/highest settings, this game runs like dogshit even at medium settings. I know it's probably pushing more polys and effects and stuff than TF2, but come on it's still Source engine.

Oh well, maybe I'm getting that 4870 a bit earlier than I thought.

Radeon 1650 Pro: 720p, all medium, 2AF, 0xAA - runs at about 45fps

Advanced is the way to go.

Normal almost seems too easy. Advanced gives you a much harder challenge. I fear what EXPERT will bring. :lol

They aren't throwing a bitch fest because they don't know it any other way.

There is no other precedent on that platform, nor do they desire the control that's the norm, on the PC. We are bitching because we don't have options, options, options. The features we normally expect, even with something as basic a server browser, isn't there. It's not even an option.

This is a BETA, without being called one. It's especially annoying, because this is a Valve game. They should know better.

Game runs way better than TF2 for me (specs: X2 5000+, 4GB RAM, HD4670). I think it's because they're finally using multi-core support properly. I'm running at 1680x1050 with 4xAA too.

Also, you can connect to your own server by bringing up the steam command line box and typing "connect IP" without the quotes. I hope they add a server browser soon though.

How about that metro level though? The first level ran fine for me as well, but oddly enough the second map looked like a slideshow.

Yeah I played all my games on Advanced and it seemed challenging but fair, provided you worked together (and the game does everything it can to encourage that).

Glad I didn't pay the 44.99 to pre-order off Valve yet.

If it's random only matches in the retail version, I will not buy. It doesn't seem possible that Valve would do something this draconian, so hopefully it is just a demo thing for testing purposes.

I've been vomited on 3 times.
I've been pulled around by the neck with a zombie tongue 2 times.
I was rushed and got fucked up by a witch once.

:lol

Do you have Dualcore? This games runs better than TF2 for me (which does not run bad at all).

It is not only random matches.

So how many levels is the demo and how long does it take to finish?
It is two levels from one of the four "movies". Takes around 30min to play but given that you want to replay it some times, cuz its freakin awesome. I would expect maybe around 1-2h

Still no code from Gamestop, blah :( And I even had a REAL transaction ID! WTF doods!

They must be sending them out at the same time. I was assured by GameStop customer service they would be sending codes out today. So I think they're all being done at the same time.

If there's one thing I like in the PC version, it's that the game makes it incredibly easy to see friends that are playing and join them. It's not random only.

oh yeah, where the fuck is the third option for voice stuff? all I saw was Z and X. I like the radial menu though. much easier (imo) to pick something to say with that compared to Z, 1 or X, 3 or whatever.

I'm playing it on the Xbox 360 and it controls wonderfully! The game is so much freaking fun, playing it with three other randoms was great. We went through the demo level four or five times, each time being completely different, which kept us on our toes the whole game.

This is going to be the surprise multiplayer hit this Fall, and if it isn't shame on everyone who doesn't buy it.

You can play with friends quite easily. You just don't get to choose what server you play on (excluding client-hosted play).

kept getting connection errors, but finally managed to get into a server after about an hour, and oh my god this game is incredible.

Is there a high percentage of lag free games? Aside from not having control of options, that's my biggest dislike of blind matchmaking.

Guess I'll see next week when the non-preorders get to play. But I'm glad I waited on ordering until I see first hand how it impacts things.

Haven't been able to play the second level...massive lag every time it loads. :(

Anyone been messing around the server tool? Any idea how you change the difficulty, or is this done when someone makes their group?

That's probably what's going on. A little heads up from Valve would've been nice though.

why do I keep getting "this game is currently unavailable please try again at another time" on Steam?

Human_Shield said:
I had that problem earlier. Completely exit Steam and then try again.
still have the same problem, although when I was installing, my NOD32 virus program detected a bad .exe and deleted it. I didn't think that was good. Related to my problem?

I'm checking the game files right now.

Exactly.

I think a lot of the bitching could have been avoided if they just said, "Listen chaps, no server browser for the demo until we get our shit sorted."

Just finished the demo, PC, on expert, with 3 friends.

Fucking awesome, constantly keeps you on your toes and some really memorable moments, especially liked slamming the door on a cascade of zombies and dusting my hands of it only to have them start clawing through the door and rushing it. The smoker with his tongue is fear inducing, you'll be walking along and suddenly hear someone shouting "HELP,SHIT!" over voice coms and see him being dragged up a building, fantastic.

The Witch is the most horrible thing I've ever seen, sitting there crying, saw her for the first time and recognised her, all of us had some form of explosive so we counted down, 3.. 2 .. 1 - "EAT THIS YOU BITCH", cue explosions and a short lived feeling of accomplishment until she comes BELTING OUT OF THE EXPLOSION AND ON FIRE, smashing one of the team in to a wall and running off never to be seen again.

The gun play itself is rewarding, you can pop a zombie in a single headshot, accuracy increases when crouched - almost identical to CS:S.

Source shows its age a little bit in terms of environments but the amazing character models, animations and frantic nature of the game soon has you forgetting about that.

Runs silky smooth, as with all source games I have to disable verticle sync else the mouse feels a little laggy.

The lobby system isn't a problem if you're playing with friends, in fact I quite like it, not being able to see pings isn't a problem as far as I'm concerned, when it's green you may as well be playing single player it feels so smooth, so if my ping's 20-60 I don't really care.

A few problems with the game lagging out especially at the start of the second level, but all in all an incredibly awesome demo and can't WAIT for more.
