The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

I'm having problems with my gamestop pc demo code. I click the link, get taken to the demo page, click "install now," click "I already have Steam," and then nothing. It doesn't show up in my games list to show it's downloading or anything. What could be the problem here?

The system requirements in the OP kind of confuse me. I thought they lowered the min. I'm assuming whats listed is the recommended

My old PC
AMD 64 3200+ (2.01GHz)
2gig ram
RADEON x800 (256mb)

I hate to be just another person asking if my computer is fine to run the game but seeing as how you have to pre-order to play the demo I don't want to take the chance. Will I be fine or should I get this for 360 instead? Thanks in advance.

copy the code to clipboard, open steam, mygames tab, at the bottom "activate a product on steam", paste your code in, enjoy

you don't have to preorder to play the demo. The people that preorder technically get the demo a week in advance from those that didn't...

Plus there's the GS trick if you didn't preorder it.

Valve has given a response

I don't see what's so difficult about a mixed system. The server browser is obviously already in place and there is an option to allow direct joins. Simply add an option to allow for lobby joins on unreserved slots.

If matchmaking is forced and there is no way to run a private server, admins have zero incentive to supply one. I would hate to see such an awesome game put down so early because of an incredibly poor design choice. "Forced" matchmaking is a mess right now.

ServerBrowser.dll and serverbrowser_english.txt

enable asap please

Surely it was always going to happen? Haven't Valve said previously that they will continue to allow you to browse all their games servers from the Steam server list? Even if you can't in the game, you should be able to launch directly from the Steam list which is just fine for me.

As to why Valve didn't say anything? Why should they need to? Every Valve release is the same. It's bitching and moaning for 24 hours and then all is forgotten/forgiven. People will moan one way or the other.

Is the 360 demo available only to people who preordered from Gamestop/EB? I preordered from Game N Trade about two weeks ago, so I'm trying to figure out if there is anyway that I can get a code for the demo.

Thanks.

I've been getting nothing but disconnects for the last hour. Been in one game and lagged out of that one, hope this is not an indication of how the full release is going to be.

After doing the openserver thing I have seen the new light. Holy fuck this game is AMAZING. So much fun, I was playing with randoms but we all had mic and was sooo crazy, especially on expert. That witch creeped the fuck out of me.

so basically you're saying a free demo will be up in a week?

So on a scale of 1 - 10 how awesome is the game?

A 4 this morning because it was trash due to crap servers and connections, but after the patches and servers going up, a 10. An amazing co-op game with just a 2-level demo. Imagine many more maps and then tack on versus mode and user-created maps.

INFINITE
as long as you can actually connect to a server, and then be able to play without horrible lags.

I rarely use the mic because I'm not a native english speaker and I'm afraid of my accent:lol I've started using it more though.

Its funny that people have already worked around things they hated and Valve has already patched most of the launch issues on Day -12. Just reading the last 10 pages of this thread is like a roller coaster ride. Thanks to you folk people who download the demo on Nov 11th have going to have a nice streamlined experience.

This goes for Americans though.

I still can't connect, all my buddies can't either.

They'll probably fix it within a couple days. If I had to guess they're probably gonna work through the weekend.

Man, don't be scared, I love talking with non native english speakers, love the accents and everything. Always good to talk to someone no matter what they sound like.

Got 2 codes for 360, but can't put either of them in because my Live is down because some jackass is using a router in my dorm building, fucking up everyone's internet. This shit better get fixed soon, or I might have to go kill this kid.

Okay so this has probably been asked a thousand times in this thread, but since I can't seem to find it...

How long should I expect to wait for my demo code? I pre-ordered at 11:47 this morning.

This is why they let the demo out early for purchasers who care about it.

Now all the whiners can get on it and Valve will have it all fixed by Nov 9th :lol

If they don't, then no buy.

I am abstaining myself from playing until Friday afternoon. It's pretty hard. :(

Lol i know what you mean...I'm french Canadian and although the accent is not that bad, sometimes people think i'm Mexican or something ;P.... glad to hear this game is fun,i'm just scared on the lasting appeal,I hope they add DLC along the way to keep it fresh.

The latter. I'm not a big zombies fan.

And these aren't your run of the mill shambling brain-eaters, either. They're fast, screaming motherfuckers, some of whom have super-powers.

The game is really that good.

Can't wait to try out the PC demo next week. :D

I'll be playing more Left 4 Dead later tonight on 360 if anyone wants to join up. Probably around 9PM central.

Next question I have is about how long the fun will last... it's the #1 criteria I use to decide if I should buy or rent a game. How many hours you think L4D will give us? I read about how the replayability is supposed to be really high but I dunno... is there ranks or anything? Or do you just keep replaying the same levels over and over in co-op and then the Director makes it less repetitive?

The lag blows. For some stupid reason the game connected me with someone who was in the UK (and I'm from Australia). Makes no sense. Fix it valve. Let me set a minimum server ping as well as if I want to restrict the server I join to being from my own country.

...Or how about a server browser? Yeah, that'd fix all that.

Anyone have an extra code to help another gamer out!! :p (360)

I didnt preorder, because I am picking it up at Fry's (have some credit from them)

I am guessing co-op and A.I Director will help with the life of the game but it really is in the hands of Valve and how regular they keep the updates coming. If they can keep the content fresh, then it has a great life ahead of it.

*EDIT*

It'll be gone quick, so use it ASAP.

Cheers!!

The demo takes about a half hour to run through. I've already played it seven times (3.5 hours) and plan to do so many more times before nov 18 when I pick up the full retail product.

You run through the same areas, but I've yet to have an experience which is the same.
