The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

Ran through the demo on 360, was a little disappointed. The guns didn't feel right, but that's a problem I've had with all Source based games. I want to like it though, so will play again.

It has that PC feel to it. A lot of ported games suffer from it. I'm sure it happens the other way around too of course (from console to PC) before I get savaged.

Does anybody find the game "meh"?

I don't know how you guys that played it for 10 hours+ managed it.

I'm a valve fan. (Have original HL1 from launch day and everything after...)
But I don't find L4D that fun to warrant 10 hours straight playing?

There are a lotta good games this season. But I don't see how L4D is miles above say.... Mirror's Edge, or COD5 Coop, or Gears 2 Coop.

Friend and I like to mess with other players by jumping off the apartment roof onto the AC units hanging over the alley. The other two guys then have to run through the building by themselves. :D

Well obviously with some random people it can be difficult, but if you've four who know what they are doing, you'll usually win. Me and some other guy just killed our bot teammates and literally ran through the whole map, an encounter with Tank aside.

Well, the demo has 1.5 levels out of 5 from the No Mercy "movie", and then 3 more movies with 5 levels each. Supposedly each level in a movie gets progressively more difficult, and you can clearly see that the subway is harder than the rooftop level, so I believe it.

L4D is more appealing than Mirror's Edge, that's for sure. Mirror's Edge has a good idea that is hard to implement, and is a short single player game. I can't speak for WaW or Gears 2 coop yet, but I plan to get Gears 2 eventually.

There have been several people in this thread who feel the same way as you. Most of us seem to love it though.

No one product can make everybody happy, sorry it's not doing it for you.

after playing both PC and 360 versions i am definitely getting this on PC, it just seems right, and the textures and overall game just look better on PC

It helps if you have friends that enjoy the game. I wouldn't buy it for single player and the pubs are a gamble. There is also a lot of mod potential.

Who said it's miles above any of those games? Why does it have to be? It's just fun. That's why I've played it so much.

Question: have you played on Expert mode? I find it too easy to rush through on any of the other difficulties. On Expert it actually takes teamwork to beat a level, and as a result makes the game a whole lot funner in my opinion.

looking at left 4 dead and thinking about episode 3.............. just saying.

on pc it looks better than any console game with the one exception being mgs4. the 360 version looks like crap and it makes sense since 360 is 3 years outdated.

1. L4D on PC looking better than all console games except MGS4? You can't be serious....
2. The 360 version looks just fine, my only complaint is that this should've looked much better if you consider that we are talking about Source engine here - an engine that runs really well even on old/really weak PC's.

I start the demo but I get a black screen. I can listen the sounds and I know that the game's working, even when I move the mouse I can listen the sounds (like clicks) that play when you pass the cursor on the menu, but I can't see anything.

Does anyone know what's causing that?

I just mentioned it in the demo-thread, but there's discussions about it here too, I guess.

I think the game feels way too fast paced and old in terms of gameplay, which kinda sucks since I was looking forward to the game.

I was hoping for a slightly slower pace and more room for strategy, not just an old school arcade shooter dressed in FPS-clothes -- which is my impressions one or two hours in.
As soon as someone falls down you just spray the ten or so zombies there and then melee, trying to revive them. At the same time you don't really see what's going on and there's just more zombies coming from all directions, and the person who's being revived is essentially just shooting as much as he can in any given direction.

I haven't read the thread, but in case it hasn't been mentioned you can enable server browser in-game with "openserverbrowser" in console. There are some servers that use custom difficulty settings.

e: at least private ones

No, it has that Valve feel to it.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the demo and I'm looking forward to buying and playing the game, but Valve just can't seem to get the basic gun play down.
It was shit in all of their games, on PC or on consoles.

This is noob question but i will ask anyway. If you have a computer gaming headset that has 2 plugs (mic and headphone) where are you supposed to hear the other players talking? I connected only the mic and other people cant hear me in l4d nor i can hear them(although the game recognizes it in the options test). I connected both headphone and mic and all i get is the sound of the game. Is there an arrangement possible like Live where you hear the players amd talk to them from the headset and hear the game sound from other speakers? Where should i connect the headphone jack in order to hear only them as i want game sound to come out from my speakers? thanks in advance guys.

I second this.
I love the zombie style and the death-animations are wonderfully satisfying, as well as the headshot-fest with the hunter-rifle/sniper. But you rarely get a chance to enjoy it because there's a 90% probability that 20-50 zombies will raid you in 10-15 seconds, and then it's just shooting everything that moves as fast as you can.

I've just played a few hours, but I hope that good coop-play will compensate for this, or that I'll learn how to spawning mechanics work.
Maybe even realize that you might be able to actually take it slow and enjoy the finer moments in zombie slaughtering.

Works fine for me.

Shotguns blow zombies to pieces. That's all you should need.

On this stupid graphical debate...

Valve really had little choice in the matter, because proper L4D gameplay REQUIRES tons of enemies on screen... way more then most FPS, like WAY MORE.

You can't really expect the game to replicate zombie swarms much better then it currently does without raising the specs to unimaginable levels. I also think the game was designed with the 360 in mind, and that surely influenced its development. Gameplay would have greatly suffered if never before seen graphics was pushed as its focus.

Personally though, the game shines in all the right places.

Also could someone recommend me a decent headset for the PC that actually outputs other people's voice through the set's earpiece? Nothing that also functions as headphones though, since i've got 5.1 surround. Nothing insanely pricey either :lol

You couldn't be more wrong, if you tried. I mean WTF.

The fact that people are arguing that the graphics are ugly while some are saying that the visuals are gorgeous shows that the industry is starting to reach a ceiling in terms of realism. What's more important, to make the game a showcase for visual tricks or to be on a well-prioritized performance budget for most of Steam's PC specs? Valve isn't stupid when it comes to catering to their customers, especially when they have great artists on hand. They really know how to stretch their graphical dollar.:D

Sorry no, this is Source. :lol
There is a certain grit or style to it.

It's not like Crysis where everyone agrees and bends over. Heck even the KZ2 thread, some don't like the lack of color etc.

Anyway, I'm still going to be a heathen and wait for some amazing mod or for it to drop to $30.

Too many games to play.

I finally got around to using noclip to fly through the last safe room in order to see the rest of the subway level. Kinda surprised they ended the demo when they did, the rest of that level looks pretty awesome.

Totally agree that it's not as realistic as Crysis (not even close), but the unique style seems to be the more important factor here. It's a visual feast already, Valve doesn't need to pour gold flakes on it. It wouldn't make it significantly better for most of their customers.

Oh, if you preordered early enough, you could have gotten L4D from Amazon for $32.

Yeah, but I wasn't sure whether I'd buy it or not. Can't resell it like other games.

What?
HL1 had excellent gunplay and other than the sounds, the HL2 gunplay is also excellent. The mechanics and feel are the best i've played.

Demo is pretty fucking cool as expected, but I don't think I'll be picking this one up just yet. There's just too much other stuff to play to warrant spending 50 bucks to shoot zombies on the source engine.

Whoa at people claiming the game looks like shit (even on PC). L4D has style, it's clean, and has atmosphere in spades.

Oh, but what's that? Not enough polygons in that guy's thumb? Not enough gloss on that wall texture? Not enough bump-mapping for the eyes to twitch at?

Glad to see gamers are so concerned about the "important" things.

Yea, I want to play that part of the level really bad :(

L4D's graphics are are very good imo. Suprisingly so actually. Good lighting in the source engine? I never thought it was possible.

Just ran through the demo on SP, Expert mode with only the handguns and no health for the hell of it. Took out a Witch and the usual super infected, but thankfully I didn't run into any Tanks 'cause that'd be bad... Heh. Sorta tense, but it's getting really easy. Retail needed asap. :(

I'm starting to like Bill. We ran into that same Witch I mentioned 3 feet away from the mid-way ammo/weapon stash in the train tracks and he says:

"You hear that Witch? I'll give her something to cry about."

..and shoots her in the face with a shotgun. :lol

I just tried the demo out on my PC with maxed settings. IMHO, it's like a completely different game, and a good one at that.

Yes. You install it on your PC then you can activate it on steam with a key that should be in the box.

Also, Oldschoolgamer! :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

It's not only the graphics though. You aim better, you move slower -- assumingly since you can aim better -- and it's a lot easier getting a grasp on what's happening around you because of this.
