The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

Wait, so can you play as the Director in the demo? And what all sorts of stuff can he do? Choose where enemies spawn? And how does he view things, via a third person camera, or can he free roam?

No achievements in the demo either. These will also add a lot of replay value.

Also, the reputation system is still going to be implemented, correct?

I am. I'd hate to see them removed altogether, cause they are a cool idea. They could be a nice change of pace from all the others
which die easily, but pose a pretty serious threat. I feel like if they couldn't run quite as fast as survivors they would be perfectly fair.

We shall see :)

Me and friends took them down. We got hurt pretty good, but we limped on to beat the level (On expert).

Just a reminder that there's a Xbox360 gamertag list over on the online forum if anyone is looking for people to play with. Feel free to use the thread to arrange meet ups if you like.

I saw you on last night, but since haven't played anything with you since either CoD 2 or TF 2 didn't want to randomly join your match. :(

The Director works in the same way many of us would. Trick people into thinking all is fun and easy, then drop an uber boss and watch everyone die. :lol

Why all of the Tank hate? I think they are great because it makes the team change their tactics and have to focus on one bad-ass target. Tank's are the only boss monsters that make me panic when I see them charging towards me. :D

The only reason why I dislike the Tank is because I believe they are overpowered. I can't think of a single time my team could take one down on Expert.
If we ever did, I'm sure whoever was still standing was hanging by a thread.

Wow, seriously, color me impressed. Is there any particular method to defeating him?
I couldn't even run and gun him without him catching up and 1-hitting me.

Hm? As a team, taking down a Tank is far from impossible, It's just hard as fuck, but that is why it's awesome. We usually go out of a Tank encounter with at least one dead guy though :lol

No, director is always computer controlled.
Posters have just personified 'the director' here for the sake of discussion.

Though what you propose sounds pretty fun.

Great games last night, Costanza and meierlynk (mYm|17|). I think we must've tried to beat the subway portion on expert a couple dozen times, only to die reliably near the end of the trains portion. I swear the director had it out for us, hitting us with a hunter, smoker and boomer at the same moment a few times. Gah.

Can't effin' wait to play the full game and versus mode. GOTY already, and that's saying a ton in 2008.

It makes the game a lot more entertaining in all the off ways all of a sudden, doesn't it? :lol

Actual conversation last night: (I think it's from the game with Dafish and Poweld)

*team makes it to the subway tracks*

Louis: Hey there's a witch around here

Francis: yeah

Louis: Let's ignore it and move o...

Bill: Ahh fuck, it's right in the middle of the train tracks

Zoey: You've got to be kidding me

Louis: Ok, let's be careful

Francis: Let's molotov it

Everyone: No! NO!

*Francis throws the molotov anyways*

*entire team goes into panic mode as giant angry fireball comes flying in our general direction*

Moments like this makes the game.

You should have joined in! Maybe we can play a bit this weekend if we're on at the same time.

Oh, whaaaat? Haha, I read that in-game protip last night about the Director making each experience different, and I thought that a person could play that role. :lol I've been thinking about that all day, and imagining the cool things I'll do when I can play as that when the game releases.

Tanks aren't that hard, they are only difficult if you encounter one in a cramped area. If you have enough space just have the 4 of you surround it and it isn't too hard to dodge most of his attacks.

Just played through the 360 demo real quick single-player. It's definitely going to be a great game with friends. Hopefully going to play through once online with some friends in between my Gears 2 fest after my next two classes. Definitely buying.

Yea good times plaid. That subway part was a pain and then if we did get past that part, we got ambushed by the Tank in that big hallway

We definitely gotta play again

Are you talking about Expert-level tanks?

Normal and Advanced are a bit too easy on the first two stages, while Expert is just absolutely brutal. Perhaps the difficulties make more sense for the other 18 stages, but right now it kind of seems like you have to go all the way or it won't be challenging.

A few notes:

1) I suck. Anybody that plays with me, be forewarned. But then again, I think everybody sucks at this point. There are a lot of common mistakes that I see.

2) Don't run ahead or scout too far in advance unless your teammates are ready. You might very well trigger an extra group of zombies and doom your group, or get sucked way out of the way by a smoker and screw your team over. Done both of those once.

3) Don't go anywhere near the cars at the end of the first stage, and don't hit them with bullets. If you do, you'll trigger a giant horde. I did that once, too.

4) Friendly Fire is far more difficult to manage in this than any other game I've played, and it's killer on Expert. There are a few things to keep in mind. First, DUCK so people can shoot over your shoulders, AND STAY CROUCHED. Don't stand up just to eat the last two hits of a semi. Second, SPREAD OUT, and watch your crossfire. I'm sure people will develop nice little charts of what's a good layout, and what's bad. Lastly, STAND STILL. If you run around, you're going to walk into some bullets.

5) Get a mic and use it. Don't be embarrassed about your horrible, horrible voice.

The game is absolutely phenomenal, but I'm not quite sold on the 'knocked down' system.

In the long run, this is going to suffer from one of the main problems with instances in MMO's, and that's the pairing of people with vastly different skill levels and experience. If you're not familiar with the strategies needed for a stage/difficulty combo, you'll probably end up getting a lot of scorn and nasty words from your teammates.

Coolest death? I threw a cocktail, but it hit a zombie nearby and burned our entire team. We were fucked anyways, so I don't feel too bad about it.

I think what Valve has accomplished here is still pretty ambitious.
But I definitely think a player controlled director (dungeon master essentially) would be nothing short of amazing, and hopefully considered in the sequel / expansions.

You may see me aroun A LOT this weekend, but on that OTHER game, but sure if you are around late night we can join.

Yeah, this is very hard, especially in the subway parts, I keep shooting people/getting shot at... It's also hard when the place is flooding with zombies, it can get hard to tell the survivors from the infected.
And I suck as well, as do a lot of us, so don't feel bad.

But the director controls much more than spawn points, I can't see how they can replace the AI with a player.

Edit: Nevermind, you spawn randomly. Nonetheless, you're ahead of the survivors, so you can pick your ambush spot.

Same for me.

Tanks are not that hard to kill. They are the ultimate test of teamwork, if your team scatters when they see a tank, it's over. But if you all keep your cool and unload everything you've got into it, then you'll end up fine and the tank will go down.

Just got through a third run on expert, at this point we've pretty much got it down to a science. It only took us one try.

:lol Braggart. ;)

I'll have to get in another game with you guys (and stay in it, for that matter) and see how you do this.

:D The last encounter specifically; Gas can to the left of the MG, molotov to the right of the MG, molotov in the tunnel. It pretty much beats itself at that point.

After killing a tank and an ambush (this all after an unsuccessful attempt to avoid the witch of course) we were close to home free to finish off the demo. Before we run up the stairs to victory, a boomer pops out and tries to get us. It was just him, shot it, no problem. Little did we know that he was just a distraction as there was a hunter upstairs waiting and pounced on Francis. Bill and I run up the stairs to try to save him when it triggered ANOTHER wave of deadbies. Our best bet was to continue to run and get to higher ground.

It wasn't going to happen, Louis was limping and ended up cornering himself so I had to run back down to give him some cover fire. Bill couldn't save Francis, I couldn't save Louis, and I was already on the floor before Bill came down to back me up. He gets knocked down and it's game over. This all happened within 20 seconds and we were INCHES away from winning.

It's amazing moments like these that reminds you to keep yourself on your toes.

We were doing pretty good, except for some occasional "spy checking" going on.

RE: Tanks. I don't mind them. They don't seem to spawn that often. During multiple plays last night, he was only around maybe a handful of times.

After all the performance reports going back and forth I was somewhat worried about how it would fare for me. I am extremely happy with what I've seen so far: 80fps @ 1920x1200 - 4xMSAA with everything maxed. Never lags.

Just played through the demo in singleplayer mode and it seemed like a pretty generic shooter to me. I'm sure it'll get better in co-op. If anyone wants to play, my steamid is NakedSushi. I'll get this on the 360 when it comes out too.

When I first read this was survival horror, I was thinking more of Silent Hill or RE where there's more spookiness than zombies. But instead the zombie rushes in this game is pretty comical.:lol

20 levels = 5 maps to load for each 'movie'. There are 4 movies.

Nice! So you can hook up with a few friends and play a "movie" to get a good solid 5 levels (maybe an hour or longer) to complete a story. Sounds like a great way to lay it out. And obviously new "movies" can come out as chunks of DLC. Me likey. :D

I had the same reaction you did, this game is a thousand times better in co-op. Main reason, i'd say, is that it's hard to give a damn about A.I. companions.

Well it's more interesting when you have a team working together (like how Zero always covered the rear last night) rather than 3 drones following you around with no initiative.

I abandoned a friend of mine last night towards the end of the 2nd level. He was screaming at me to come back and save him from the hordes, but I bolted for the safe room. Then he gave me crap about it for the rest of the night. That's not something you can get from the AI.

The performance issues with L4D only seem to be for poor and older hardware. Integrated graphics do not fare at all, unlike in HL2 and TF2.

I have a E6600, 8800GT setup, and the game runs flawlessly.

1680*1050
4x AA
16x AF
Everything maxed

70-130fps. Never even drops to 60. Awesome!

To all those wanting to play as the director... go try the HL2 mod Zombie Master (http://www.zombiemaster.org/), it does EXACTLY what you are describing, plus it's up to 16 player co-op (well, usually 15 survivors and 1 zombie master).

The zombie master basically flies around in noclip mode and can spawn different kinds of zombies or activate traps wherever the level designers have placed nodes.

However I have to say after playing L4D I don't see myself going back to that game... ever.

What the... I use an E8400, an HD 4850, and 2GB of RAM.

1280*720
4x AA
16x AF

Usually runs from 50 - 120. Sometimes drops to 30-40 when a hundred billion zombies come running.

I seriously think connection quality plays a huge factor in performance. I have a Q6600 OC, 8800GTS OC, and 4GB

1920x1200
4xAA
16xAF
Everything Maxed.
Never below 80fps

Was it a random game? That exact same thing happened to me... I threw the molotov.

Has Valve said anything about the ability to mod the AI director? What if you wanted to make a mod where the zombies were slower and could only be killed by headshot. Is there a way to make the AI director aware of that change, and then alter its behavior accordingly?

I thought witches were only supposed to appear above normal? I just saw one on easy. I was playing alone, exploring the levels to find good shortcuts and item locations and whatnot, and I guess the director felt I wasn't challenged enough, because he started sending multiple boss infected at me at once, and then in the subway there was a witch with a smoker guardian (and about four waves of infected at the same time). Man that would have sucked if the smoker had dragged someone into the witch. Anyway, I had the autoshotty and figured, hey, I'm on easy, so I tried to headshot her with the pistol. Didn't work.

One of the most annoying things is having a Boomer jump off a building to commit suicide, splattering you and all your friends with goo. Major bummer.
