The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

I wish more people would use microphones, especially on the PC version (I expect more from you, PC gamers). Headsets make the game MUCH more fun, not only for tactical advantage, but also for dicking around and sharing some laughs.

Playing without some sort of easy-to-access communication just feels like I'm playing with bot's that make stupid decisions sometimes.

Not everyone has a headset on PC, plus playing at night it's not always polite to be yelling into a headset when other people are sleeping.

Plus headsets should add more to the tension and " Oh SHIT!" moments. Get fully immersed in the game.

True, but USB headsets are really cheap nowadays. I still use my old PS2 Logitech headset. And we dont have to yell right? :lol

Understandable, although players should always understand how good communication makes this game much easier/enjoyable.

Just wish there was a way to filter out users with only headsets. Maybe I just need more steam friends I know have headsets to play with.

Did the update fuck up the start of the subway round for anyone else? Now it keeps reconnecting to server whenever that part of the level starts.

When I pick up an item and there's another one there, my character tends to yell out that there are pills there, or something, automatically.
You can trigger the character to shout it out manually too.

Press Z and let it go whilst you're looking at an item (That triggers the "look" voice command).

My cheap headset's mic is pretty bad, and I have to pretty much yell to be heard, and even then sometimes there is static.

I'm not having that issue on my PC, but post it on the Steam forums if you keep on getting that issue. Valve watches the forums closely for feedback about their games.

Oh well in that case, keyboard chat is probably best. Though i'll definitely be using my set.

Teknoman said:
Im sure most of PC GAF has a headset anyway. Had alot of voice chat going on during TF2. Even the server said not to be shy :lol
Don't be shy, little GAFs. Heck, one guy in the L4D team with a mic helps out a lot already.

edit: (demo public in 4 hours)

Go to the community tab and it will be on the right under gameplay stats.

Thanks!

...wow, theres no way I've played for 11 hours. I was thinking maybe 4-5 tops. Does it consider it playing time when you just have the game open (not even in the lobby)...or have I really blown that much time on a damn demo? :lol

This is slightly off-topic but, I am falling in love with the song they chose for the L4D trailer. Elbow - Grounds for Divorce. It's fucking awesome.

Generous? They'll be cutting off access to the demo on the 18th. People are going to be forced to either quit cold turkey or buy L4D to get their fix. It's almost diabolical.

Does anyone have any extra 360 code? I'm impatient and know I won't have time to play tomorrow. =P

My teammates were prepared to vore me off because I said that I was going to buy the game, implying that I was a pirate. :lol

That's stupid if true, I love the game, but have to wait until December to get it because of money, and me and my friends enjoy playing it and will all get it at around the same time.

Actually it's kinda smart. I could easily just see people playing the demo, and making maps for it. It would be like Battlefield 1942 demo all over again.

I want this for PC so bad but im a little worried about my specs.

8600GT 256Mb
2Gb DDR2 667

And the bit I'm worried about

P4 3.0

I want to run the game at 1024x1280. Is anyone with the demo running similar specs to this?

Can you run any of the other Source games pretty well? Because this seems to run weirdly better than TF2 on my machine with everything cranked up to the highest it can go.

You're pretty much dead on the minimum requirements for the game:

Code:
System Requirements

      Minimum:
o Supported OS: Microsoft Windows XP / Vista / Vista64
          o Processor: Pentium 4 3.0GHz
          o Memory: 1 GB
o Graphics: 128 MB, Shader model 2.0, ATI 9600, NVidia 6600 or better
o Hard Drive: At least 7.5 GB of free space
o Sound Card: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card

On Nov. 11th the demo is available to everybody no pre-ordering or key code required. Give it a try, this will be the best way to determine if you're happy with the way it runs.

I'm not that worried about playing it with everything on low so long as its at 1024x1280, i'm just worried that because the game seems to be so CPU intensive (AI Director and ragdoll bodies everywhere) that it wont matter what i do with my graphics settings its still gonna chug.

The voice commands make a headset irrelevant, I think. Let's go, wait, you take the lead, hooray, argh, yes, no , sorry, thanks... what else do you need?

P.S. I ordered a headset this weekend.

Headset is useful to let people know where a special infected is, rather than one just being near, and also when the music that plays when a horde is coming, good to let people know where all the zombies are coming from, whether in front, from the back, or both.

wow someone got that fast. Bunch of lurkers.

That's what I've already said.

It's stupid to post your code's in the open, so then non-members can grab them.

Also, Valve just released another patch just in time for the public release.

■Tuned matchmaking to provide better search results

■Added UI to host a game on a local server

■Improvements and performance optimizations to network layer

■Improved handling of unsupported graphics hardware

■Fixed a rare crash when kicking people from lobby

■Fixes for demo exploits

■Localization fixes

■Increase automatic port range when running a Linux dedicated server with -fork

Also, those exploit fixes supposedly block access to Versus mode now and playing as a zombie. Not sure what other little tricks it blocks taht people found, but the block of playing as zombies is in fact confirmed from what I read.

You can't communicate any reasonably detailed tactics via the commands, for starters. Nor do you get any of the personality of your compatriots, which is most of the allure in the first place.

Dont forget all around fun.

so after the last update- surely the last before the demo goes public- connecting to a server through 'openserverbrowser' is considerably more janky and broken than it ever was before. 95% of the now much smaller list of servers (perhaps those are the only to have updated) are now displaying 'connect from lobby only' - even those that expressly state otherwise in their tags, as opposed to the 95% that you could access from the browser before.

even if you get into a server you have to do this weird click-dance just to get into the game.

if this is truly the direction valve have taken the networking side of the goty, it fucking stinks. a dickwad shot square in the face of the community.

Come on Active GAF, snatch this one up!

Oh come on. This was just posted. How the hell do people activate these things so fast.

I mean I know the demo goes public for everyone in awhile...but damn.

I'm mostly referring to the 360 version, my laptop could probably easily run this, but I've never been a big PC gamer plus all of my friends are on xbox live.
