There is. If you can time it JUST right, you can melee them right before they pounce on you. I've done it once and haven't done it again though.

But it will only stun them, which will give you plenty of time to kill them.

So being put on the ground while a Horde plus a Smoker is destroying your group might have been one of the most intense moments I've had in a game. I was really proud of myself when I shot the smoker off a teammate from across the room while I was still downed.

That's very strange... This has happened in the past with Valve games though on initial release. I have it running smoothly and looking decent on a P4 2.8 and 6800GT on another PC, so somethings not right. As others have suggested: defrag, shut down any anti-virus software, etc, etc.

My computer's clean, nothing really running in the background.

It turned out I just needed to update my video drivers. After doing that, it ran perfect.

Most of the people who updated their PCs since 2005 have moved on to Source. It's only the really hardcore crowd still playing 1.6 at the moment.

Wow, I was looking forward to this game but I didn't realize how awesome it was. I started hosting a game with two others and one of them quit and it was all so seamlessly done. Next thing I know, all slots are filled and we're having a blast. You've done it again Valve.

Also, the gameplay itself. This is probably among the simplest games I've played in ages. No complicated weapons or charging attacks. Very straight forward, very easy to get into, which is perfect because you're instantly in the game, feeling trapped with three other people.

I was not expecting the game to be this appealing.

I expect this demo to stoke Crackdown levels of enthusiasm.

Left 4 Dead is on the Source engine. Everything Valve has done since Half-Life 2 has been on Source, and they plan to keep using it for years to come.

I'm getting something like that. I have a Radeon 1900XTX 512MB. I just downloaded the latest catalyst as well. When I play it full screen mode 1920x1200(game mode is 1920x1000) it will give me artifacts and gives me an option saying that my graphics card stopped responding and it reset my settings. However, if I run the game in Window mode, it works. I have no idea why window mode would work yet full screen wouldn't since window mode should be taxing the game more. I just registered on the steam forums so I can't post on there yet to ask why it's happening.

Retail versions of Valve games always come with a Steam serial code. Half-Life 2 did it, Orange Box does it, Left 4 Dead will do it.

I know all valve games can be activated in steam but I vaguely remember that at the HL2 launch that the retail and steam versions were different in that you still needed the disc to play the game if you bought it retail. Maybe my memory is fuzzy.

I just want to open that box, activate the cdkey in steam and never touch the disc.

I just realized i've never bought a valve game retail before. Even going back to when I had multiple cdkeys for all the valve games they were all from friends that we passed around for CS.

L4D PC demo kept crashing on me at random points (even though my PC is more than capable of running it nicely). I guess it could just be demo issues and whatnot. Can run Fallout 3 full detail with a decent framerate and never crashes. I dont think its an issue with my PC or its hardware...at least I hope not.

I got that on my 9800pro when I tried to crank the graphics. I fixed it by dropping shaders (or everything but textures) back to low.

My drivers are also way out of date. But I'll wait till I get my new PC before screwing around with this config.
