The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

Cheat enabled servers are just too much fun. Spawning hundreds of zombies and hundreds of pipe bombs/gas cans/oxy canisters etc is just zombie porn.

I just got out of a server with a mate, the carnage:

Edit: Please give me L4D Gmod, pleeeeaaase.

15,000 is nothing. I wonder how high the number is going to get tonight. Overall I bet more people are going to download the demo through Live than Steam.
Peaked at 19,500 so far for the day :-O

I got that on my 9800pro when I tried to crank the graphics. I fixed it by dropping shaders (or everything but textures) back to low.

My drivers are also way out of date. But I'll wait till I get my new PC before screwing around with this config.

I tried dropping everything to low in full screen mode and it's still happening. I guess i'll have to play window mode.

I'm getting something like that. I have a Radeon 1900XTX 512MB. I just downloaded the latest catalyst as well. When I play it full screen mode 1920x1200(game mode is 1920x1000) it will give me artifacts and gives me an option saying that my graphics card stopped responding and it reset my settings. However, if I run the game in Window mode, it works. I have no idea why window mode would work yet full screen wouldn't since window mode should be taxing the game more. I just registered on the steam forums so I can't post on there yet to ask why it's happening.

Sounds like your video card is overheating. That card in particular (1900xtx) is particularly notorious for either having dust clog the air flow or simply melting the fan that comes with the stock cooler, even when you don't overclock it. I had to replace the cooler with one I bought from newegg after it started doing the same thing (artifacts... "card stopped responding"...) and it started working again.

I know all valve games can be activated in steam but I vaguely remember that at the HL2 launch that the retail and steam versions were different in that you still needed the disc to play the game if you bought it retail. Maybe my memory is fuzzy.

I just want to open that box, activate the cdkey in steam and never touch the disc.

I just realized i've never bought a valve game retail before. Even going back to when I had multiple cdkeys for all the valve games they were all from friends that we passed around for CS.

like 2 versions into steam after HL2 they got rid of the need for a disc. getting your games to work offline is another story though. =(

Xbox demo is taking FOREVER to download. Not that it really bothers me, I have lots of other stuff to do at the moment, but worth noting I think.

You really should, it's a great experience (which would only be made greater by hearing you commentate throughout the game :D)

Fun games, guys. Can't believe we survived having a witch sitting in front of the door switch.

hey guys put this into your l4d launch options, makes aiming so much better

-noforcemaccel -noforcemparms -noforcemspd

then enable mouse filter in the options

I loved the random Hunter going all "BAIL OUT!" on top of the semi tanker.

I need to lay off, I'm guessing im at around 12-13 hours of this demo by now...I know the retail version has loads of new content, but playing round after round of this short freakin demo is burning me out a bit.

Ya, it'll be better when there's a bigger map rotation.

I'm downloading the XBL demo right now, since I don't have a PC that can handle this game.

Question is, how does it play on 360?

Controls are tight. Graphics are decent, though noticeably more blurry than the PC version with little to no anti-aliasing. Matchmaking is just as quick and painless. Almost the same menu's and same options.

Essentially, Valve gave us the best 360 version they could on the 360's hardware.

My friends game looks like this :( Yes his resolution really is that small.

Any chance i'll be able to fix his issues and get L4D up and running for him?

Another "problem" he has is occasionally he'll have built in wall hacks in tf2. Boxes and Doors don't appear to him until he gets up close. We do quite enjoy that though.

Not sure, try running in windowed mode.

Also, the FX5200 is really really old and slow, and possibly integrated. His motherboard is old and AGP so he has limited options. He could invest in an old video card, for semi-cheap, like this for $65:

But it's probably best if he buys a new PC at this point, his machine is what, 4 years old?

The Xbox demo is a lot of fun, but I think I'm going to go PC with this baby.

Demo was awesome, if a bit short. I'm frothing at the mouth at the thought of playing this with friends. AWESOME!

I'm running L4D with everyting on low except for models/textures on high, it looks like shit too. I have no idea why your friend is missing a lot of textures though. Is that processor he uses a dual core? I don't know if that proccesor meets the minimum specs.

As for the tf2 thing, the source engine does that when you put some settings on low.

Played the L4D demo on 360 with 3 friends tonight. Had a great time. Had some really crazy stuff happen. Even more crazy than usual. Probably won't play the demo again but I'm definitely snagging the final game.

It's some sort of bug I think. People with fast video cards get that bug too.

I love this game.

We got to the last room and inside was a tank. We were running around the generators on the side across from the machine gun trying to avoid him, but there were still a few zombies who were getting in our way, and two of us got separated. The remaining two of us managed to make it to the door. He pulled the switch, since the tank could be after us any second and the doors started to open while zombies rushed in. He turned around to fight them off, but they were already on him and he went down. We fought them off of him and I pulled him up to his feet, but as I was pulling him up, the music started up and I saw a huge wave of zombies rushing up the stairs directly across from us. They climbed over the boxes and I got him to his feet just as they were running up to us. It was too late for him, as they rushed him again.

Fortunately, the door had gone up just enough for me to duck back through. I slowly backed under the door while trying to shoot the zombies off him, but it was a lost cause. Even more were coming in from all over and they were starting to come after me. As the last one standing, I needed to stay alive, so I backed up to the stairway and blasted off the few that managed to come under the door and after me. Then I ran to the top as my partner died and all the zombies turned to me. I made my break for the door and turned around, with the zombies just coming up the stairs. Then I blasted the gas can, putting a wall of fire between the stairwell and me, and ran inside the shelter and slammed the door shut.

Zoey survived.

Biggest disappointment so far: Tanks can't throw cars. D:

That would be awesome.

Cant wait to see the senario map packs people come up with. There better be a Dawn of the dead and 28 days/weeks later pack.

Can tanks defenestrate survivors?
I don't see why not since they can punch you across the map. I gotta go do that now... or when I get a chance to find a building with a window in it. The second half of map 2 in No Mercy has high rises with windows that survivors pass by. :D

SapientWolf said:

WHY WOULD THEY DEFEND THEM LOLOLOLOL

Serious answer: I don't believe there are any windows in the demo that can be thrown through, unless someone wants to test it on the two windows next to the minigun.

Why do I only remember being pounded by tanks and not being thrown around? Edit: I guess I've just been "lucky".

He had god mode on so the tanks couldn't kill him. Not sure if you were joking. One hit from a tank will bring you down unless you have God mode on.

Oh I see. I was about to say, in my experience every time a tank touched me I dropped like a rock.

Played the 360 demo with the bots, not my cup of tea. You just shoot masses of zombies as you move from place to place? That's it? Seems like it should be a free HL2 mod, what am I missing? It even looks bland.

No, you can definitely be launched, as quite a few times, I've been thrown 10-15 feet by a Tank punching me.

Most likely it has something to do with your health at the time because I was still up and about after I was sent flying.

edit:
Anyway, played this on and off for the night and I can't wait for the retail. Snake, Vyse, Haklong, Sonnyboy, KungfuJedi, Anjel, BenjaminBirdie (for a bit :p), and guy whose name escapes me, good times. :D
