The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

Good Game tonight. Damn crow getting tanked RIGHT at the end =(. I always thought that finale was the easiest, now with that exploit I know it is. 16,000/58,000 zombies down. I got a way to go.

I hope I'll be good enough next time that you can help me do that, but at least you guys got through.

Hey now, none of that! There were some good tips posted earlier. Basically you just have to practice a bit, and stay with the group as much as possible. There will still be unlucky things like the tank, but even that sort of thing can happen less if a group is helping protect you. Chin up! =D

Thanks. I'm more annoyed at messing up the plan when we lowered the forklift and at being out of position during the bell ringing hold than my numerous deaths. I'll have to stick closer that's for sure.

It was a good time though.

Unless I'm doing something wrong, it's not working.

Why are people so incompetent in this game that they cannot avoid the damn witch?!? I tell them to wait and they still go ahead and aggro her. Had some dbag throw a molotov at her on purpose, I wasn't surprised he would do it though since he called some other guy the *N* word in lobby. So I proceeded to TK him and they voted to kick me, not like I wanted to stay anyways.

I was in another game where we didn't startle her, she just screamed like she was about to get up but never did. The game didn't give me the achievement though, I guess you can't even make her scream at all.

What is the Death Toll finale exploit that people are talking about?

If you go all the way along the coast to the right, there is a rock that sticks out into the water. If you jump and then crouch at a certain spot (near the right, but not ALL the way to the wall), you can climb up on the rock. All four players can fit up on the rock.

Once up there, your only dangers are smokers and tanks, as far as I know. Smokers will apparently ALWAYS go to the right. They may sometimes go on the dock, but I only saw them wading out behind the dock to the far out deep water. A sniper can simply wait and shoot them every time they go out there. Tanks can throw rocks, but apparently shotguns may be able to break rocks while they are in midair.

Unfortunately, apparently tanks CAN climb up the rock...we found this out on the third tank as mentioned above. I'm not sure if this was after we had moved slightly back on the rock, since I think a separate semi-exploit/glitch is to stay on a ladder above a tank, since it then won't be able to climb it.

I am in love with this game. I played a good amount of Versus tonight (360) with randoms and it was suprisingly a blast. There's nothing like smashing cars as a Tank and hitting three people at once, or being a Smoker and dragging that last survivor away as he's trying to revive his teammate. :lol

I still wouldn't say the game is douche proof, as there were a couple people who liked to TK, but as far as voice chat goes I didn't have a problem all night.

thanks for all the tips on the smoker guys i think i have definetly improved now on it to the point of getting some really nice drags including a kill i made last night. which leads me on to my next question:

how exactly does scoring work?

i ask as on last nights game we had played 4 acts on mercy and had a slight lead (i think it was 150 odd points im not sure) we ended up dying just as the chopper arrived due to a wonderfully played tank who broke us apart and incaped one and knocked another off the roof. then on our turn i got my best smoker kill as i isolated one on the roof where you climb up just after his mates had jumped down :) and we promptly took them before they even hit the radio! now i was really happy thinking we had it in the bag so i was barely looking when it flashed up that they had won!! how did this happen as in terms of distance/time we were much further on. it left us all a bit baffled so can anyone shed some light on this?

They might have beat your team in the overall score, which takes into account the scores for all of the past levels. I've had instances where my team has achieved final victory after losing the last two levels of No Mercy.

well i can guarantee we were winning overall up to act 4 according to scores (roughly, my memory is not THAT good) as:

act 1 was a quick kill for them and a medium one for us 33 - 53

act 2 medium kills for both 73 - 97

act 3 both dead just after the lift bit 120 - 140 (this one is a bit fuzzy)

act 4 i lived (yes i abandoned them but i was told to!) and we killed them before they got into the elevator. 300 - 160 (again rough score)

this is what we were told but at the end they were given the win. and i swear the scores were inflated to like 4k scores somehow? but i might have not recalled this bit correctly as it was just a glance i got at the end.

If there was 4k scores, multiple survivors would have survived on a level or two (2 surviving doubles the score, 3 = 3x, 4 = 4x).

yeah thats why im thinking i saw that bit wrong and it must have been 400 scores.

Steam? Add me (wormstrangler). We'll be doing an expert run on Blood Harvest probably on the weekend with some really good players.

I tried last night with a different group. They were fine, but we couldn't crack the damn finale even after an hour and then it was 11:30 at night...

Blood Harvest is my last expert run I need to do.

There is a bigger glitch on this level which makes all the tanks and horde disappear during the finale. All you have to contend with is the run back to the boat, which two or three pipe bombs do nicely :lol

After getting the Cr0wned achievement, witches aren't really scary anymore. I one-shot them even with the regular shotgun.

Yeah to be honest I've had much worse experiences on random PC games than on Live.

Total agreement. Played yet another random game on XBL, had yet another great, fun experience without a trace of douchery. Kindness, healing, and teamwork.

You keep saying that, yet you still haven't told me how to do it. ;_;

I've run into a couple of annoying people. Mainly, public people are a huge unknown. We had an entertaining BRAD PITT guy who actually stayed in, but a good many public people seem to be bad and/or leave quickly so you get stuck with bots.

So how do you do it?

:lol As long as you're not getting selfpics it's all good!

I play on XBL entriely with randoms (because my friends are, variously: poor, waiting for christmas or are skeevy CoD addicts) and I've been finding it pretty fun so far. The shine is starting to wear off a little bit though since lots of people are using mics less (fuck them) and less people seem to want to try Adv/Expert on 360. I've never gotten a satisfactory game going.

Although saying that, I have been quite enjoying 'roleplaying' as a surly veteran that is sick of saving dumbass little kids. It can be quite a fun experience when you have to watch your teammates intensely just in case they indulge in a spot of doucebaggery. That said though, I have had a lot of great games with great people who really get the game. It's just becoming less frequent recently is all.

If any UK GAF would like to add me, I'd love to play with some people that y'know, use teamwork and stuff. My GT is Jedeye Sniv. I'm chatty and a total team player.

My WTF moment of last night:

Anyways, my friend asked me to do a random Expert run with him, so we chose No Mercy. It was us two for a while, then Davidion and fallengorn joined up about partway through. Though fallengorn eventually error'd out and I was sad, he either just saw this moment, or barely missed it.

So, we're on the floor of the hospital with the elevator wait. Of course, before the elevator, a Tank is waiting on us. Dave gets slaughtered first, and this is where fallengorn errors out, so he of course is next. I want to book it back to the huge open area near the cafeteria and whatever, so I'm telling my friend to run like hell. Before I ran, I noticed a molotov a little ways from the tank that flew from fallengorn's corpse, so I make a dash and grab it, then throw it to light the tank on fire. I run to the stairwell and wait halfway down it, and watch my friend come back so we can go back at the same time. He keeps accidentally shutting then opening the door on himself, so he's stuck in the frantic rush he was doing.

Ok.

Well.

Apparently the tank can bust through a wall and get to exactly where I am in the stairwell.

......and I did not know that.

So suddenly, I see a huge flaming hulk of evil standing right next to me, and of course, I'm taken down quickly.

I was like "What the fuck just happened?"

That was crazy.

Anyone have any good advice for the finale on Blood Harvest? My friend and I are doing two player co-op, (we're clearing out Normal before we move on to higher difficulties or more people, to make sure we're ready,) and we always get slaughtered. We've been making our stand in the Children's bedroom, but somewhere around the time that the Tank shows up, it all just kind of goes to hell.

The barn is a good place. We usually have two in each back corner (so you're not in window view for a smoker to grab you). And even if the two in the corner near the hole in the roof get barfed on, the other two can provide cover fire. Just be sure to spread out once each Tank makes its appearance.

I am amazed. I have yet to play with randoms who did anything but talk about strategy. My theory is that games with pure deathmatch modes attract a larger group of immature assholes.

When you hear the tank, run outside. It sucks when you don't notice. Happened to me in the 2nd campaign last night. I was in that bathroom. Shooting zombies and not taking a single bit of damage when the tank came around the corner and I couldn't get out of the room. :(

Also, I am pretty sure that meleeing the tank doesn't always get you aggro.

The finale to Dead Air is officially IMPOSSIBLE on Expert. Seriously now, every other campaign has a building or something where you can hide, but for this, you only get like a mangled stair case to hide on and a bunch of debris to help you get destroyed by the Tank.

Get in the spawn closet on the far left (if you're using the minigun). It's a bit underhanded, but just spread out when the tank comes, and you're good to go. And keep a pipe bomb for the horde when you rush towards the plane.

Finally beat No Mercy on Expert last night! Just Blood Harvest left to go. :D

I can't emphasize enough how useful that stairwell in the radio building is. Two players watching each side, staying just out of the doorways, plus copious amounts of melee makes that place completely Smoker-proof. It's not vomit-proof, but even when you've got the stuff on you, there's no reason to panic or change tactics.

Listen, just because I get a little trigger happy with the auto-shotgun doesn't mean I'm a bad person.

Is it me, or does meleeing after a certain point in the reload animation speed up reloading? This is for the submachine gun and machine gun.

Played through No Mercy last night and murphy's law was in full effect... I would not only miss my intended target, but also end up inadvertently killing/wounding one of my teammates. Particularly annoying when trying to take down a tank.

This one time I thought it'd be sweet to light 'em up with a molotov and - BAM - killed Franics instead. Louis gets knocked down half-way across the map, so I line up and start shooting at the tank that's pounding him...instead of taking damage off the tank I get 'don't shoot your mates' message. Hiliarious.

No Mercy & Dead Harvest
After pushing radio there is a pattern
Zombies, with Smokers, Boomers & Hunters.
Small lull so stock up on ammo and heal.
Then comes Tank #1
Small lull so stock up on ammo and heal.
Then second wave of Zombies, with Smokers, Boomers & Hunters.
Small lull so stock up on ammo and heal.
Then comes Tank # 2
As soon as you see Tank number two start to go down

A. Run for helipad and have Molotov or pipe bomb ready. Anyone more than three steps behind will get swarmed

Run for the APC vehicle and have pipe bomb ready. Can't use Molotov and be on the first guys heels cause swarm comes from front and back.

Stay indoors, if level has a closet then get in and close the doors or on upstairs levels usually 3 windows and 1 staircase. You got four people you should be fine. Tank comes then run outside and get back inside as soon as tank#1 goes down.

It doesn't speed up, it's just that the four survivors are dexterous enough to be able to reload and melee at the same time.

I originally planned ONLY to play Left 4 Dead on Expert after playing the demo, but it hasn't turned out that way. Now my goal is to finish ONE of the campaigns on Expert:lol

Yeah I think the demo had a lot of people, myself included, thinking the game simply wasn't going to be hard enough even on expert. Glad that turned out not to be the case.

Don't know if it's the same thing, but the game says that if you reload when your clip isn't empty, you will reload faster. Then there's the reload-firing, but that's mainly with the shotguns afaik.
