The Official NeoGAF Groundbreaking Electronic Music Thread™

Vice did an article on the new EDM industry in America.

The guy clearly knows fuck all about the music but his analysis of the business is pretty interesting.

As an aside, there's a fascinating PHD to be written on why masculinity is such an integral part in achieving mainstream pop culture saturation in America (see EDM, angry Kirby, cock rock etc).

. Avicii might be EDM’s Great Hope, a mainstream figure that the underground is pretty okay with

EDM is a genre of pop music and a sub genre of dance music. It isn't synonymous with dance music. I would prefer it was called Rave 2.0.

I didnt even know it was a "genre". I went into community and looked at the EDm thread and it confused me even more..
There is Digweed mixes being posted in there which just adds to it.

Don't talk to me about that EDM thread. I couldn't believe there managed to be a group of people more pretentious about electronic music than us on GAF (or anywhere else on the internet, let's be honest), but there you have it ;)

The writeup is such a tease, I didn't see the B side previewed on SC and I really want to hear it after what they had to say. Is the preview up on a preorder site for the B side?

I'm looking to get more into electronic music. Really all I have experience with is Daft Punk, Burial, The Avalanches, and DJ Shadow. You guys have any recommendations based on that? Hip hop influence is a huge bonus.

edit: and Gorillaz, if that counts, is one of my favorite "bands"

For hip-hop influenced I'd recommend you: Pretty Lights, Cashmere Cat, Hudson Mohawke, TNGHT, Apparat, EdiT, The Glitch Mob.

Yeah they are all pretty different but all worth a listen.

That was very cool, thanks.

And Dreaver, I'm familiar with and a fan of TNGHT, so if they're any indication of your other recommendations I'm sure I'll enjoy them. Thanks.

Those are some pretty far apart "genres" haha.

Burial: Hmm Four tet? Jamie XX? The XX to some extent, James Blake maybe?

Clams Casino is loosely tied to both above and below recommendations id say with his Rainforest ep anyway.

TNGHT: Hudson mowhawk and lunice obviously, Rustie, Baauer (too obvious?) S-type, RL Grime, Ryan Hemsworth and Sinjin Hawk

Daft Punk: Err depends on what "ere" like I could say Chic if you are talking RAM for example but that is a million miles away from Home work etc

Bought this one finally,
Eternals, The ‎– Wrath Of Zeus [CRYDAMOURE]
Country:France
Released:2002
Genre:Electronic
Style:House

A true banger from Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo's label Crydamoure. Sampled strings, banging drums and Zeus himself punishing you from not dancing, epic.
Might aswell share it with you guys since no-one except the sellers on discogs are getting money from this release today.

DfP or GW? The latter wasn't as good as I'd hoped when I saw him this year (was far better, funnily enough, at Future where he was playing in a promo Jack Daniels hut, no shit).

GW. Went there for a few drinks on a Melbourne trip (went and saw Raekwon and Pavement) and he was playing. It was before I was really into dance, but he played a great set. His Psycho Killer remix went off.

How is Future? The line up is always so... bipolar.

Having a Jack Daniels tent at a dance festival is bizarre.

a) Yeah, it's rad. First time I heard that was a year and a bit (or two) ago in his EM.
b) Eh. There's normally only three or four acts I ever want to see. They almost always end up disappointing, I see one or two that I didn't care for who actually turned out really good (read: Alex Metric a year or so back)
c) $$$$. Almost as weird as going to a Gatecrasher rave at the docks (shut up, I was young) and seeing ads for Foster's Ice (or whatever it was called) beer. But it was a tiny room, air conditioned (I recall it was REALLY hot that day) and the best music that was on in that block (and as it turned out, for pretty much the whole day). Made even better by the fact that we literally didn't know he was playing there (and could easily have glossed over his name as he was wedged between Andee Frost).

<3

I've been silently creeping on this thread for ages. Keep up the good work guys.

Biz, thanks for all them podcasts. Made my commutes all the better the last week.

Would people mind giving this a listen? I made it a few days ago basically for one friend but its kind of grown on me.
There are a couple of pure train wrecks but there are also a few bits im pretty happy with.

Whether thats because ive re-listened to it about 5 times and become desensitized to how shit it potentially is is why Im asking some outsiders who would ahve no problem tearing it apart :)

John-Lenham- Night (35mins long)
Tracklist is a mix of Burial, Jamie XX and the XX. My traktor history wipes on shutdown for some reason so I lost the proper one..sorry.
