The "Official" Nintendo DS Launch Thread (NSF56k)

One thing, since it's an american DS and I live in the UK, would it be ok to buy a GBA SP UK AC adaptor and use it with the DS to recharge the battery?

It fits into my front pocket with enough room to spare so I don't get how its not pocket friendly.

unless your pants are xxxl i don't see how you can have extra room to spare with a ds in there. i guess is should have rephrased my gripe and said "does not fit comfortably in a pocket." because really, it's like having a first generation PDA in your pocket.

Yes. I can also recommend the USB chargers that lik-sang etc do. Charges your SP/DS from your PC (very good when you are at work)

Although if its your first import ever, its almost tradition to buy a step down transformer :)

I've been putting more hours into my DS with Mario 64 than Halo 2, Mario Power Tennis or GTA: SA. I'm at 114 Stars in Mario 64 DS now, and I still have a ways to go until I finally get them all (only the 100 coin Stars and a few hidden ones left).

And I've got Band Brothers and Hitofude on the way (both scoring quite well in Famitsu). The DS certainly spanked my GBA as far as time spent on launch titles. I played Castlevania straight through without stopping but that only lasted a few hours. Mario 64 has gobs of replay, including the crazy multiplayer. Plus I'm just amazed by the immersive sound. It really sucks me into the world. This is precisely what the GBA was missing.

What are you using to control? I remember Mario 64 required some serious dexterity for some of those stars, and I can't see it happening without an analog pad.

I'm using the middle control option, which lets me use my left hand with the stylus (very precise and quick) and my right hand to jump and control the camera. I should easily hit 120 by tonight.

Thanks! Yeah I might pick up the USB charger if I need to charge it while I'm at Uni or something :) Now I just need to decide... Mario or Feel the Magic? Decisions, decisions...

I'm getting mario, and Made in Wario from Japan (£27.99 inc postage from play-asia).

Mario has some pretty good mini games by all accounts, and Made in Wario is the king of all minigames (you played either of the previous ones?). They seem the pick of the crop to me.

Never played Made in Wario, but I've owned Mario 64 in the past (N64 launch day in the UK infact!) but I haven't played it for years! I might get Mario and a GBA game, maybe Minish Cap?

Oh. My. God.

You have to play made in Wario. you can have my tilty Japanese one for £15 if you like.

I also recommend Minish Cap. Great Zelda game, and GBA games are supposed to look great on the DS. Also has good music for those lovely stereo speakers...

I'm flying through this shit. 126 Stars now. I should hit 130 by tonight. The difficult part comes when trying to get all the 100 Coin stars.

Finally got my DS.

One comment: The DS really needs a Home button. Turning it off and then on again after playing a game is kinda stupid.

Aaaah, decisions decisions, I think I might just wait for the english version of Wario Ware DS before I sample the delights. Thank god I got my overdraft extended though, there's TOO much that I need to get for the DS/GBA :( I want a Sonic Advance game too, but they're so expensive in the UK, any import site suggestions?

Haha. I am lucky enough to still have my Mario 64 strategy guide from back in the day. Of course they've added a few new stars to each level, as well as Bowser's three levels and a ton of hidden ones scattered around the castle. I seriously am having a blast. I can't pull myself off this little system. It's so easy to get swept away for hours and not give a shit about the real world around you.

Well I bought the DS on impulse based on having money on hand and it was almost the last unit left at best buy. I must say, I love playing the mini games on Mario 64. Usually waste about 30-40 min just playing those alone :P. I'd say its a little too big for my pocket so I bought a case, protective screen stickers and a car adapter. Overall postive experience so far.

Minish Cap looks fantastic on the DS. Couldn't believe my eyes when I tried it this morning, the colours are so vivid it almost looks like a different game. Don't think I'll be able to go back to the SP, although I do wish you could configure the buttons for the GBA games. It's a tiny bit awkward. Still, the great sound and picture make up for it. :)

I hear ya, i was on the toilet playing mario 64's mini games with the stylus, when i suddently realized that i had been there for like 45mins 0_0

Ordered Mario DS tonight, I was going to get a GBA game as well but I figure, I could just ask for one of them for Christmas since I don't really have any other ideas about what to ask for Christmas apart from money and clothes.

:lol This is my predicament too. I was going to get a couple of other games here soon with my DS, like FFI+II, but I think it would be better just for me to wait and actually have something to come up with for Christmas. Mr. Driller is really tempting me though.

too expensive :(

i saw a few (about 6-7 actually) DS's listed for 'buy it now' with the price of 182.50 - which is actually CHEAPER than play-asia - well, according to PA's current prices :P from what i remeember the guy had a stack (1000+) positive feedback so could be soething to think about :D

edit: it would appear a lot of the prices on ebay for newly added DS's have been cranked a little :p but you can still see the odd one for 190 buy it now.. 50 bucks more than retail in the states, but if your only alterntaive is buying from sold out import stores..

well I pre-ordered mine from Nov 9th.. and I only paid £130 for the system+SM64DS

so I'd rather wait than to but it now for £190.. when the Japanese version is released PA will start filling more orders.. so I'm counting on that

This has probably been posted, but I was wondering what the word is on imports... I would guess, like all portables, that I can play Import DS software on my US DS?

I would really like to get Sawaru Made in Wario before February! Any help appreciated.

OMG! I just talked with a friend who works at EB. They have 3 Systems left! MrBob was right again!

She's a bit jaded when it comes to Nintendo and she seemed really hyped about the DS, if not its launch lineup. All is well.

i meant $190 not 190pounds :) all good though - i'd be more inclined to wait like you are, but i'm actually going on hols on the 7th december and i wantit for the hideous plane ride :P

More playtime with this excellent handheld. I can now officially chuck my worthless gba maybe get some store credit for it. I was pretty harsh on Nintendo with thier idea of creating another platform but this DS is great. I love playing my gba games on it and first DS title I bought is pretty good(Mario DS). Great speakers and the screen is nice. My only regret is I didn't pick up Feel the Magic or Metroid cause it was sold out :\. I don't really know how well it will do against PSP but this really is a great piece of hardware and satisfied on this purchase based on my impressions.

Okay. I'm at 129 Stars and it's getting fucking hard. The only few left to obtain are just three or so 100 Coin stars and some on Bowser's levels. I'm so close. Anyone know what happens once you get all the stars? Same ol' deal from the original? Or some extra content? This game is seriously like crack. My girlfriend got to 265 on "Wanted". I was playing Mario Golf for a long time while she was just plowing away at it. Now she wants me to get her one but in a different color. Come next year her wish will be my command.

Wow, I thought GBA prices would be much cheaper than that elsewhere in the world. Seriously though, have Nintendo mentioned anything about dropping the price of GBA games now that the DS is out? :\

Also, I have a link for a DS on Ebay using buy-it-now for £106 ($195) with worldwide shipping if anyone is interested, PM me. I was going to buy another one for myself and sell it for a profit on ebay UK but the extended overdraft can only go so far :lol

Unfortunately, GBA games use an older memory technology which is considerably more expensive than the one used for DS media. Unless they can find a way to use 3DM in GBA carts I wouldn't count on prices dropping anytime soon.

is DS ok on the plane?

I remember that Wi-Fi enabeled devices are not to be used on the plane.. or I could be wrong

we were down to 2 DS's at work, and they send us... 4 more...

though we were down to 2 again by the time we closed last night.

black friday is going to be fucking crazy. (oh, and we only have 8 ps2's... and it's in the ad.... fucking sony)

Ugh, I'm hot... I work at a GameRush and was going to get a DS from there and give it to my fiancee, who was down here on Tuesday and Wednesday. It turns out that our store's shipment of DS systems got "misplaced." I hope that the delivery guy who lifted our store's systems suffers an especially painful death.

Madden DS impressions

This is the best handheld football game ever made. The problem is, that's not really saying much. It's probably not worth $40 unless you really love your videogame football. There's no reason to buy this to show off your new system, that's for sure. Not too polished and feels pretty bare bones.

However, it is fun to play for those who like Madden, and it's much better than the GBA versions of Madden.
