The "Official" Nintendo DS Launch Thread (NSF56k)

I'm thinking of importing one, but are there any shops/sellers that can guarantee no dead pixels? I don't care if the box is opened.

Give them a quick email to see. If there are quite a few dodgy units, some of the better/bigger shippers will start to have policies.

I'm going to pick mine up on Friday. Hopefully they won't all be gone by then and the guy will let me check the unit for dead pixels first.

Awaiting Mr Driller :(

btw- I have 1 dead pixel ON THE TOP SCREEN and it pisses the fuck out of me.

Mario controls beautifully with the touch pad. So much fun once you get the hang of it.
It's like one giant analog stick.

Touch pad > analog >>>> d-pad

:D

Hrm.. price isn't going up for DSes like I thought... I'll give it three more weeks before opening the box.

My sister really wanted to play it the first day (Friday).

JUST OPEN IT

has anyone asked this question yet?

does anyone know/ have any ideas whether an American DS would be able to communicate with a JPN or PAL DS? even if the machine might not share the same character sets in Picochat, maybe you can still handwrite/ draw with each other? i guess we can only be sure when the JPN DS comes out in a few days' time?

The U.S. DS includes Japanese characters (I am not sure it includes Kanjii, but Hiragana and Katakana should be there).

In addition to Band Brothers I'll be getting Hitofude, a puzzle game from Nintendo. I'm really impressed with Nintendo of Japan's launch list, which utterly crushes that of the US one. I guess Nintendo was preparing all that advert money for the J-launch, and not the US. Anyways, I'll be playing my new games within the next week.

You fell for the hype. Protip: When an EB/Gamestop guy says that something is "selling out everywhere," it's usually a lie.

In my local Gamestop is selling for 165 dlls!!!

how import freindly is Warioware DS?

I expect the game to be perfectly playable, but there will be games using Japanese letters. There was one in a video I saw recently. Probably not enough to stop you completing the game (I managed to complete both previous ones and they both had Japanese games) - you might need a quick visit to gamefaqs if you can't work them out.

I've got a blue dead pixel on my lower screen, but it really isn't noticeable unless the screen is black, since the colors are so rich on the DS. I do remember having a pixel stay red on my SP when I played Yoshi's Island, but it went away eventually.

I will probably not bother switching the system unless the pixel actually starts to bother me after I've played a number of games on it.

I just want to chime in and say that the "Hard" mode in Feel the Magic is fucking awesome. God, more challenging and more fun. This is such a great game. Much better than "competent." :P

Just bought mine, The metroid prime demo is pretty nice, the unit feels really solid; i'm not sure if I really see the innovation in mario64 DS tho :\

Anyway the unit is pretty impressive, cant wait to see the upcoming ga,es.

Ruh-roh! DS is teh chick magnet! AIM convo with my gf:

her: i really like the DS
me: me too
her: i might have to save up and buy one of my own
me: i was a little worried before
me: that would be awesome cause we could play multiplayer stuff
me: and pictochat ;-)
her: haha...what is pictochat?
me: its instant messge software that comes with the system, you write what you want to say and send it like AIM
me: and you can draw pictures and stuff too
her: cool
She's been playing it more than I have :(

BTW, I'm talking about using tunneling or something with pictochat, if she's in the same room we can just talk the old fashioned way :P

Just you all remember Olimario invented the Girlfriend, so I have to wait on the final word from his gf on the DS.

so far we have many GAFers posting about the gf and wives taking up their DS playtimes

Thus the DS created a new market for handhelds. </heaven's chorus>

Indeed,

My girl picked one up yesterday when I told her she could keep a hold on my 'Feel the Magic'

been Pictochatin' ever since ... getting her used to controling Metroid, and she picked up Mario 64 right away (She never played the origional with analog)

I am so itching to buy a DS right now... but being 31 thus a responsible adult I need to pay my rent deposits and sign my lease first before I put any money into my gaming this holiday

:(

Maybe I can get one after I sign my lease :)

7 more days please don't be sold out

I'm happy for Nintendo hopefully PSP won't squash the party and Nintendo ends up 3rd party ;)

haha, good man. I feel your pain. I was tempted to pick one up on the spur of the moment today...but that's a lot of dough for a system where the software/online portion aren't there yet. Why the fuck didn't this thing ship with some basic PDA functions? Dumb. Or maybe I just didn't find them.

Gotta say, the graphics and controls are pretty nice after spending some time with it. Better than I expected.

The Gamestops by me (MI) pretty much all had them in stock today, so don't trust the online listings for them. I can only assume if the gameshops had open stock the other stores would as well. I don't see the fire for the unit at demo places or otherwise, especially with the easy availability around the city for purchasing it, but with Xmas coming people will fill gift slots with them I'm sure.

Heh. I work at Gamestop. Anyway, I bought it at Game Rush because I bought games at a discounted price at Gamestop and traded them in over a few days (Game Rush had a deal where you trade in any PS2/Xbox/GC/GBA game, you get $5 extra). I racked up $370 in the process, spending $70.

They have a bunch at the circuit city on E. 86th street in manhattan. :)no dead pixels here..thank god, had one on my gb sp and my digital camera.......

spoke too soon...one smack in the middld of the top screen.

For any Canadians without a DS but wanting one, DO NOT enter the Muchmusic contest on http://www.nintendo.ca

I want to have a chance, here. So, although I feel obligated to let people know, at the same time I have to insist you don't pay attention to what I say.

Wouldn't mind one of the T-Shirts, quite nice.

I'm not a Canadian, but living in Canada I entered anyway, thanks for the link!

LOL! Why is that so funny to me.... :lol
Sorry about your luck man...

Picked up a DS and Mario 64 today at K-Mart up here in Northern California. K-Mart had like 20 DS systems still in stock, but only ONE copy of Mario left - go figure.

Initial thoughts are positive - I like how it's built, as many have said, feels solid, lots of attention to quality details all over. I like how the thumbstrap works a lot; for me it feels comfortable. Mario 64 is great; I won't repeat impressions already given, just say I agree with the ones on the positive side. The DS LCD quality really is great - I'm trying out various GBA games in the DS and comparing them to my GBA SP.

Nintendo +1 :)

If true not bad for a non-purple nintendo hardware... but where did you get this news?

Through the grapevine ;)

Can't wait to order mine later :D Hmmm to get Mario or Feel the Magic...

Got a dead pixel here -- a red one on the upper screen, offset in the upper left about 30 pixels in or so.

Don't like the stylus or "touch" strap controls for Metroid Hunters or Mario 64... the screen seems to be oversensitive and thinks I'm double-tapping when I'm not... and using the thumbstrap it isn't so easy to swap from human to morph ball and back with Samus. Also, dear lord, I've been paranoid about having clean hands when playing, and still have managed some heinous thumbprints using that thumb-strap thing.

Unimpressed by the system and its games so far... kinda wish it had some PDA functions... hopefully when Animal Crossing or Advance Wars come out I'll have a reason to be excited.

Right now, though, eh.... it's my new Nintendo logo'd paperweight. I'm going back to the SP for the time being. (Love my little black pocket happy system)

Anyone else have Asphalt Urban GT? I was a bit worried when IGN gave it a 5.5, but man, this game is very fun and addictive.

Yea, I grabbed it too, impulsively .... you know one of those 'new system is out and barely any games are out' times.

It's actually a tight little package, very arcade with lots of cars (wasn't expecting).
The tracks are nice too.

It certainly fills that 'Cruisin' USA' gap.

i got plagued by the infamous dead pixel as well =[. talk about BAD manufacturing/QA on nintendo's end. i had bought "feel the magic" and played for a couple hours last night, but that "magic" was missing overall with the ds. i attempted to exchange it today at best buy but they were all sold out. decided to get a refund instead.

a couple gripes with the ds:
- too heavy
- case feels cheap
- not very pocket friendly
- too much empty space in between buttons and dual screens
- metroid absolutely cannot be played with the stylus, need thumbstrap
- game cases are way too big for that tiny card
- too much shutdown/rebooting when settings are changed

things i liked:
- gba games looked slightly better on the ds screen
- battery life
- user interface was nice
- speakers are awesome
- framerate on "feel the magic" was silky smooth

overall, highly disappointed by the ds and nintendo's quality assurance. i'm hoping there's a redesign to make the thing smaller. it really feels like the xbox of the portable gaming world.

I LOVE IT! And btw every LCD product has dead pixel issues, but VERY few of them replace units with only one 1 screen pixel dead.

I'd call that great quality assurance.

Just a note for all the Sega and Feel the Magic fans;

If you own one of a select few of Sega's GBA games, place them in the slot and start up Feel the Magic for extra "body parts". I have Chu Chu Rocket and unlocked a NiGHTS head for the girl. She looks so funny with the purple "horn" hat things.

There's a list on a site somewhere. Can't remember, it lists all the compatible games. Let's hope more companies do this in the future. (What would have really rocked is if Mario 64DS could unlock stuff if you inserted one of the Super Mario Advance games or the SMB Classic game. We'll see what the future holds.)

The games that unlock content are listed in the FtM instruction booklet.

I actually love the size of the unit. I get a much better grip on it than I could with the SP.
Still fits well in my front pocket with no worries about screen getting scratched. Love it!

Do you think WEP will be a problem when trying to hook up with a wireless router? I'm hoping that Nintendo doesn't try to "simplify" things by forcing you to use only unsecured networks.
