After 44 years, MTV is shutting down all music-only channels globally. Here’s what you need to know about the end of an era.

By today (December 31st 2025), MTV has finally shut down its reaming 24 hour music video channels. MTV will no longer be known as Music Television, as it originally rolled out as in 1981. It will still keep its main flagship channel, but only focus on entertainment and reality TV slop.

The writing was on the wall, and MTV has been in a slow decline since like 2008. With Youtube, TikTok and other social media sites hosting the majority of music videos, I don't think anyone cares.

As of today (December 31st), MTV's remaining 24-hour music channels worldwide are going dark.

Just to add more:

The decision to shut down MTV's music channels comes as Paramount Skydance seeks to cut costs across its global portfolio following its merger earlier this year.

That sounds about right.
