The Order 1886 Gameplay Footage

They took a victorian era, made it 'dark and gritty' and added large guns. Plus gears of war-like gameplay. Seems pretty obvious to me.
Looks gritty to me.

The trailer with the members of the Order inside the building and then suddenly you see the creature with its claws out from the side of the room is my favorite trailer so far. I love that they are going this route with the game. Action mixed with Horror it seems. Walking around a dark building with a flashlight not knowing what is around the corner. Could be awesome.

I just listened to Podcast Beyond, and what Colin said was worrying. He said it just didn't seem ready (not nearly as far forward as most games he see's seem at this point) and that a delay wouldn't surprise him..

First problem would be that you are listening to IGN. Then your second problem is, you are listening to IGN.

Guys, they took a city that is famous for being foggy and overcast and made it all foggy and overcast. Talk about artificial and lame atmosphere.

You can't jump, instead you *thump* the enemies into the air, slide into them and crush them into mush. The game may be many things, but limited it is not.

Bulletstorm. I think I'm going to cry.

It definitely felt limited around the use of a controller to me. If the game had been designed for m/kb I don't see why it couldn't also have had a jump button. Instead you're stuck to the ground and you can only go over certain parts of the scenery and even then you need to make sure you're at the right angle to get the contextual prompt. For a FPS that's all supposedly all about skill this is a big annoyance. Moving around was way more satisfying in Painkiller for example, or most other shooters really.

RAD already said at the event that is was unoptimized IGN knows this.

@notaxation the build had a few glitches from a last sec audio problem (which of course did not happen in our tests)
@notaxation it runs pretty damn sweet for this stage of development :)
@jawadoh7 the AI is still rough - we have some amazing people working on it, it will get better soon. :)

Games several months out are rarely ready.

There's still 7-8 months of development left, lots of work to do. If you noticed, he was pretty much the only one out of all the press who was disappointed performance wise. This far out from release, there will be bugs, there will be some glitches here and there. Did you not think the footage looked quite polished at this stage?

I have full faith it's coming this fall. Full gameplay demonstration at E3 showcasing destruction and physics.

Well Colin is a pretty big Sony guy. So I doubt he would have mentioned something negative about the game unless he really felt it needed to be said.

Lighting, atmosphere, and sound design look amazing. Hopefully the environmental textures (walls, ground, ect.) get bumped up a bit.

Gameplay wise, I definitely think they should have waited showing gameplay footage until they could have shown something more substantial like exploration and a variety of creatures. Like at E3. It was extremely linear (more so than most shooters even), and the inclusion of QTEs is annoying. Basically, this footage has diminished my hype for the game. I was hoping for a great looking game with some amazing gameplay. But it seems as though most of their focus is on driving the narrative forward. Or making it as "cinematic" as possible.

Well it really IS not ready, because they have 8 months left in development.
And if this is not enough, they can delay it. Not really a problem at all.
It's not like the whole game is flawed.

Well certainly it's a high priority title for Sony and they're going to want to dedicate all possible resources into making this happen. Still a delay rarely hurts I think. That little extra polish can go a long way.

why is there so much brown hasn't this photographer ever heard of color? goddamn everything gotta be brown these days

If you research it, you'll actually find that the past was not sepia toned like that, that's just a limitation of the photography equipment of the time. Color actually did exist in that era! Don't take my word for it, ask around!
Guys, I'm pretty sure Walt Disney invented colour in the 50's.

I'm pretty sure they said just that. They're focusing on a cinematic, story based approach. And they've said before it was a TPS. We've also known about the cover shooting mechanics.

Posters expressing surprise clearly haven't really been following the game (as is your case) or are just flat out feigning surprise and trying to troll.

I'm sure I'm not alone on this, but this is exactly everything I wanted and expected from the game (as someone who's been following the game), if the Story holds up it'll be great.

This. So far it's pretty much exactly what I want from it.

Even if the game is delayed -- that isn't the end of the world. Our main worry should be the game being good. Luckily, you can fix the issues that Colin brought up. You can't fix a shitty story or bad level design. They wont release this game with these types of issues -- especially after Collin's job at calling out his concerns and putting the internet into a uproar.

I never really complained about the guns but come on man now you are amusing...
Hmm?
Garret Foster, tech director on The Order: 1886, says, “All those pieces of technology for the most part – especially with weaponry and things – were there in some capacity. You can find this guy in this part of the world invented this piece and this guy in [another] part of the world invented this piece. Someone could have conceivably [combined] the existing technology. That’s what a lot of the weapons are based on: ‘Well there was this guy in Eastern Europe that invented this and this in guy Britain invented this piece.’ They could have conceivably have met each [combined] those pieces together.”

Yo welcome back Bundy.
Hola ;)
Delaying it past the holiday season would be a big deal though.
Not really. The winter/holiday time is crowded with big games.
Delaying it a few months would make sense, if you ignore the pissing contest between the PS4 and XBone.
Just look at "The Last Of Us". Delaying + releasing it in the 1st quarter of the new year was the perfect decision for the game and its sales.

edit.
It was the 2nd quarter.
Whoops!

This wasn't the greatest showing (outside the beautiful visuals), I still have faith that RAD will produce something special. If they can balance the shoot bang with some of the more moody, dark exploratory/investigative bits (shown in the trailer) it should be cool.

Are you that ignorant of the era? Victorian London was lit by gas lamps, smothered in both fog and smog (at that time the radiant city heat that disperses fog from most of Central London around the Thames by about 6am didn't exist) with a nice layer of coal soot in places that couldn't afford to keep the streets & houses clean.

As for guns - have you ever seen a Victorian hunting rifle or blunderbuss? Huge guns, for bringing down elephants.

Naughty Dog have a reputation that precedes them, so their games will sell regardless. RAD obviously aren't there yet.

This is up there with Colin Moriarty's comments about out-of-period walkie talkies and use of the word 'rustic'. It's steampunk with werewolves and you're complaining about the guns?

FWIW - from the descriptions of the guns I've read, the tech is based on physics research & ideas that weren't unheard of in the late C19th.
lol. and the same people don't complain about elevators in futuristic games.

I think the lack of response since this was pointed out speaks for itself.

True, but still.
Releasing it in a time, where no big games are launching would be good for the sales.
+ Nice marketing push and good reviews -> better sales.

You said something out 'fantasy guns' being used and that it wasn't a good thing.

The idea of an electrical weapon was mooted by Faraday, who theorised you could build a capacitive charge and direct its discharge on an object. The idea of explosive grenades is at least as old as gunpowder (probably further back, since it's not the only thing that explodes), same applies to the chaff-type weapon (and the materials used in The Order 1886 were available at the time that could be used to start fires).

As I said, just because the tech wasn't there as it appears, the theoretical and in most cases the technological bases were there (not the electric gun - we still haven't built proper directed-energy weapons) - they're fantasy weapons in the sense of not being real, bit not in the sense that they couldn't have been invented.

Guys really ? Is that so hard to understand that a werewolf action thriller game tries to reference the obvious unsaturated/gritty tone that you would logically find in.. movies of this genre ? You know, Werewolves of London etc. Horror movies in general.. Is that this weird.. A game in an horror setting looks like movies in the same setting ?..

I mean are we dumb enough now to randomly and blindly judge any game based on the number of colors you see in it ?

The party pooping effort in this thread is unbelievable. I mean i was the first to say the gameplay reveal was underwhelming compared to what they announced, but people complaining this isn't a colorful open world game with the entire london population simulated in real time. You gonna have to lower your expectations guys. Not every game can be GTAV or MGS. Not every game can take 5 years of dev. If you're not willing to embrace a nice little action game with a great production value / art direction, the industry is in trouble.

Two notes about the sound:

- Trailer sound, VO and music are all fantastic. It feels good to listen to that narrator speak, and the characters VO, what little is there, is grounded in the scene.
- B-Roll sound on the other hand is terrible, possibly due to a really bad 5.1 downmixing to 2.0. Everything sounds like it was recorded in a phone booth, or at best using a microphone to record the game's sound being played from some speaker in the room. There's part in the end where you can barely even hear what the soldier is saying probably because his voice is supposed to come out of rear speakers, but Youtube just cuts that off.

The characters models are unmatched from anything, but something else disturb me, pieces of papers and journals texturized on the ground, something that the last of us do really often. I can understand on ps3 but on ps4 it's ridiculous! Every object on the ground it must be made from geometry and it should move when touched... please Rad fix this before the game come out, otherwise the realism goes to hell! :(

RAD said the b-roll had last sec audio problems so that's why.

Suppose it depends how they develop their games. If they're like evolution, they might have the entire thing done, leaving 9 months for AI refinements, framerate optimisations and general polish.

Honestly though, i never expected the order this year, so a delay wouldn't surprise me.

lol! the evolution myth lives on. It's so fucking unbelievable how these urban legends just stick on people or thins or companies and just stay there forever.

Wtf...lol. So because a piece of paper isn't modelled with physics the realism has gone to hell? You do know real time visuals are about tricks and compromise. I realise the PS4 is a powerful bit of kit, but it isn't an unending power house. What would you rather have, cloth physics that you see all the time? Or modelled bits of paper of the floor that serve absolutely no purpose and you pass by in a matter of seconds.

Is this really what some people expect of next gen?

Man, I'm finding it hard to get excited about footage of shooting mechanics in games. They're all just so alike. Hide, shoot, Hide, shoot shoot. That doesn't excite me about a new game.

7-8 months sooo long for a game... in 3-4 months we will be seeing something a lot more representative of early build

Everything in the world is rendered with soft body physics,I think that is enough.
