In The Outfit, you can play with up to eight players in one of the three multiplayer modes:
Destruction: All players have five minutes to destroy as many buildings, walls, trees, vehicles, and other items as possible. You gain points for everything you destroy, bigger = more points, and the player with the most points at the end of the round wins.
Deathmatch: Kill 'em all!
Strategic Victory: This mode is very similar to Battlefield, with several command points and strategic buildings scattered around the map. You win by either having more command points at the end of the round or capturing all the command points so your opponent can't respawn. In this mode you can set options such as F.U.s (field units, the "currency" of The Outfit), F.U. crate drop time, and spawn time.
The entire game is squad-based with up to four teammates directly under your control (as well as your enemy's control). Add in the soldiers that sit and man artillery units, machinegun setups and such and you can wind up with a large battle even with only a few players. So, although the game is limited to eight players via both Xbox Live and system link play (or two players on split-screen), matches feel much more intense and chaotic than you'd expect. Being as each player usually has four squad-mates at his side at all times, encounters are always hectic.

If you're not interested in going head-to-head, you can also play two-player co-op throughout the 12-mission campaign mode. Although you won't be able to save your progress mid-mission in co-op mode, you can jump to any of the 12 missions and play through each one as soon as you unlock it in either the single-player mode or in a previous co-op session.
