I knew that e-mail to Gaben would help....lol

Congrats Farsight, can't wait for it to hit Steam!

I have been in front of the PC more than usual lately and need my pinball fix.

Were you the dude who sent an email to Gabe when I did?

High five. We did it! Is there any mention anywhere of when it will be launched on Steam? The impression I got was that it was basically ready to go.

Yup, I got the idea from you. High five!

Really hope this comes out soon like now. Wonder if the pack prices will be the same as PSN/XBLA?

The impression I get is the beta tables for the kickstarter are pretty much ready, and the Steam version probably needs leaderboards and stuff integrated now, I'm expecting end of May (like was mentioned a little while ago), but perhaps they'll have something to say in the newsletter when it goes out this week, they do try to usually give dates in those.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Given that Steam has the provisioning for beta users, it should be fairly easy (from the back-end side of things) to grant those Kickstarters beta access to whatever tables they backed.

A little more info on the Steam version (and indirectly the 360/PS3) from PAF (here and here):

- Special PC build for Kickstarter backers (@ the $100+ levels) coming late April - early May.
- Public Steam release to follow later. UI work still needs to be brought up to mobile levels, table lighting has to be adjusted for PCs.
- 360 and PC both use Directx 9.0c & same tech for the ball reflections (PS3 is done differently due to different hardware)
- The HDR/Bloom is different on all 3 platforms due to hardware differences.
- Both PS3 and 360 use DXT compression on the textures. PC uses much less compression on the textures, some textures are completely uncompressed.
- Lighting model is the same as Xbox 360, possibly more advanced lighting tech for higher end GPU's to be added.
- Anti Aliasing on PC is at a much higher, up to 16X as opposed to 2X on consoles.

Man, I thought those beta releases were basically ready to go as far as the official word on that forum goes. Mike (I think?) even said that he was surprised it hadn't gone out already.

I'm guessing that it's "early May" rather than "late April" the betas go out :/

I've been going back and forth for the past couple of hours wondering whether to buy tables on the Vita/PS3 versions or iOS version, since I own both platforms

IOS is the better version right? But PS3/Vita has trophies and friends list.

It's also cheaper on PS since I'm on the US PSN vs the Aus App Store which adds 50c to each purchase.

Shaneus

iOS is more consistent and is more likely to get major issues fixed quicker. PS3 may be better overall, but not all tables are equally good. Some are (apparently) pretty bad, while others are good.

I'm sticking with iOS and buying on PC and perhaps 360 when they're out (providing the 360 one will be compatible with Durango, as long as it has b/c).

FB post, emphasis mine:

As you guys have noticed, we've been greenlit on Steam! We expect to be available in just a couple months. Thanks for your patience and for your support in voting for us.

In other news, FarSight Studios is once again turning to the pinball community to help decide on a table to add to the Pinball Arcade.

Which Classic Stern pinball table would you like us to release first:

Catacomb (1981)

Flight 2000 (1980)

Galaxy (1980)

Meteor (1979)

Nine Ball (1980)

Seawitch (1980)

Star Gazer (1980)

Trident (1979)

Voting ends on May 1st, so be sure to place your vote before then:

So...June, I guess?

iOS update also says iCade support is in this version, for those who have been waiting for that.

WW has a Pro Menu, because of course it does.

AFM is the free Table of the Month.

Right on time, hopefully the newsletter comes out soon too. Here's the new banners for table pack 13, I think Andoird/Kindle/OUYA/Mac all generally get the release the same day? If they're not out soon on those platforms I'll switch them off. Also no videos of the new tables have been released yet, so the video links are down til then.

Steam releasing in a couple months is disappointing, but not too surprising. FarSight is tapped pretty thin already, and it seems they didn't spend resources on preparing for the Steam release while it was not certain to be greenlit. I think had they been ready to release sooner (like immediately), they'd be able to pick up some extra sales off the greenlight news that was going around before, vs releasing in June/July/August or whenever they are finally ready.

Can confirm the Mac version update just popped up as well. Doesn't appear to be up on Google Play yet, but maybe soon?

Mac version update mentions some new antialiasing options, maybe I'll give it another shot.

Bah! Google Play always seems to update first.

Well, not minding the new tables. Space Shuttle has just about the best lighting/colours I've seen on iOS (save for Funhouse), but WH2O looks kinda flat. As well as that, the ball feels like it has bugger-all weight. I've not played the table IRL, but I'm sure it's not THAT fast. Some shots feel impossible!

Here's another tip for iOS users: Even though STTNG is the only table that forces you to redownload it, there are also updates to Firepower and AfM that require you to delete the old tables first. The jets have far more kick to them than before, so that shitty wizard goal in AfM is actually achievable by a normal person. AfM I think has also had that bump in the loop fixed too.

Go so far to say that AfM is now probably the best playing table out of the lot.

From the Newsletter, hint for Table Pack 14:
"For Table Pack 14, we've got two greats for you; a Bally and a Williams. Back in the 80s, this Williams table outsold the Bally table by over 4 to 1 according to www.ipdb.org. But... don't discount this Bally classic, there's a good reason why it was a fan favorite."

Initial guesses from PAF are for Centaur and Pin-bot.

Nothing too exciting really. Wii U not even mentioned, which is strange.

How do you delete the old tables? Just delete the app?

On iOS, in the main screen when you first launch the app, just go to options then manage tables.

Whitewater is a notoriously fast table.

Cheers forge... I didn't realise it was *that* quick. It still feels a bit off though. If you've played it IRL, fire it up on PA and see what you think, I'm curious.

Posted this on PAF, might as well have it here, too:

I had a box where I added some spare HAPP buttons to a motherboard box, and added some male/female RCA cables to the 360 pad and motherboard box so they were mapped to LB/RB. I have an iCade Core but no Dremel so I couldn't cut holes in that... but I had a spare iCade Jr. I never used and this motherboard box... so I wired up L&R flips and added nudge buttons and launch/down arrow. In practice, it actually works pretty well :) Seems to be a bit of lag (and I may be mistaken, but slightly more on newer tables... Firepower was fine, but AfM seemed to have a little more lag).

Still, fun little way to play it when I'm at home! Will be adding magnasave/special buttons, but not worrying about menu navigation etc. Perhaps when/if I make a proper box for it.

Sounds about right. Though Flash was a Williams table that sold a hell of a lot as well, so it could be that. But "hell of a lot" was when it was released... could've been eclipsed by later tables fairly easily, I guess.

Fingers crossed for Flash, but I won't complain either way. The more alpha-numerics the better.

PlayStation 4? Interesting.

I wonder if it will be cross-buy again. Or if my tables will move over. I know I'm a minority in many ways, with respect to my gaming habits, but having Pinball Arcade on PS4 would make my decision to upgrade a good bit easier.

I'm banking on BC 720 for my console PA experience. I have a feeling it won't be cross-play (if such a thing would exist for PS4... I doubt it). There'd be too much expense involved in FS releasing it to justify having it on there as a freebie.

On another note, I'm kinda glad that in that second interview the FS guy confirmed that the PC beta for KS backers should be out in a week or two and depending on your backing level, you'll either get just the table you backed OR said table plus the four original tables. I chucked in $50 for the TNG KS, so I think I'll be PCing it up pretty damn soon :D

Edit: Crap, I never posted it here! Second PAF interview with Bobby King of FarSight
From memory, he mentions one or two features that might/should be included in the next software update such as new carpet (ahaha) and disabling *all* camera zooms (such as the mixmaster one on Dr. Dude) in case there are bugs (or for preference). Also mentions that thing I said earlier in the post about the KS backers and Steam version.

Pretty sure the early PC beta is only for those who paid $100 or more for beta testing privileges (actually it's $500 or more going by the kickstarter, but maybe it was lowered at some point in an update).

The PC "beta" of the KS tables were going to everyone who selected PC as their platform. As for that beta that was mentioned in the Kickstarters, I just assumed it was beta access like what the other beta users have on PAF... just early access to tables for testing on whatever platforms. Probably wrong though.

Damn it, now I have to temper my expectations of playing something more than TNG in the coming weeks :(

This probably won't mean much, but I broke 10 million on Funhouse tonight. Man, Rudy becomes a crabby bitch once the clock hits 11:00, lol.

This is the only reason why I turn on my PS Vita, lol.

As much as I prefer Steve Ritchie tables over everything else in almost all cases, I still think my favourite out of all the PA tables is Funhouse. It's a lot smoother and faster than a lot of the other Pat Lawlor ones IMO. And of course, is before DMDs so it was created before many of the DMD tables became generic.

It's been a while since I've played it IRL, but it felt about right from memory. I should be making a trip to Pinball Wizard Arcade in the not too distant future and I'm pretty sure they have it there now.

If PinBot is coming, since they already have Bride of PinBot there, they should also add JackBot to complete the trilogy and so I can hold the flippers during a casino run.

Hi, just got a Nexus 7, and planning to spend 10 $ on this game. Could you please advise me which tables I should buy ?
Everyone here has favorites. I like Medieval Madness, Attack from Mars, Star Trek, Funhouse, Black Knight, Taxi, Monster Madness, Master of Magic, and Jive Time Big Shot.

went for medieval madness (and bride of pinbot ). love it :)

i suppose the guns and roses pinball will never be available ... loved it when i was young.

Sounds like Giant Bomb is going to do another Quick Look of the game or at least doing something to look at some of the newer tables (they did a video of the game on 360 when it launched). I always love hearing Jeff Gerstmann talk about pinball (or really, any old video games), it always tends to be pretty fascinating.

I'd love for that to happen, as well as the recent Rolling Stones and AC/DC tables.

Stern is also releasing a Metallica table, which looks pretty cool.
I really wish I had confidence in Stern making any good tables ever again, but even though I love the design, sound, layout and (to a lesser extent) the artwork of AC/DC, the machine itself just feels like a cheap piece of crap compared to any of the Williams tables I've played. Played it when essentially brand new and at varying stages of being "worn in" and it just felt cheap and hollow the whole time. Mind you, that was the base level AC/DC but still... I doubt the more expensive ones would've felt much better.

I'm keen to try the newer ones like Wizard of Oz and whatever the other one was (damn, I'd love to see one based on the Oz TV show) just to see what the quality and feel is like (still don't like that LCD in place of the DMD though).

On that note, is there any theme people think would be perfect for a table? I've always had a few ideas kicking around my head for quite a while, in particular I think a Futurama-themed machine could be done and sell absolutely shitloads. There are enough fans of the show to make sure it was a hit, as well as being something that would fit in well at an arcade. Would be a theme that's not intimidating to kids either, so you'd be more likely to get the young folk playing as well.

Hell, if I knew anything at all about 3D modelling or whatever, I'd design one for one of the emulators going around. Not that I could program it, but still... programming a P-ROC (or hacking an existing ROM) couldn't be that hard!

I'll admit my knowledge of pinball history and the multitude of tables out there is limited, but I think there's more that can be done with golf beyond what No Good Gophers does.

Hm, thanks for the thoughts there. Come to think of it, didn't Bally do a The Who's Tommy table? Why is that not on this? I think the licensing wouldn't be an issue, and it makes sense within the context of the album and all, since pinball plays a part in the plot and provides the tag quote for this very thread.

Speaking of No Good Gofers, I broke 30 million on that table.

I think so too, but do you think there's a market for it? If there's one made that focuses more on realism, unfortunately it won't be the sort of game with flashing lights or loud noises that would attract people to it in a pub or arcade setting. It would (unfortunately) need to have a Gofers-esque level of wackiness (or a little bit less). It's a good idea for a theme, but maybe for something like Pinball FX where the outlay isn't so massive and it can target a relatively niche audience. I'd certainly buy it, though! Even with something like an integrated LCD where the pinball can seamlessly become a virtual ball on a screen (that you could control with the flipper buttons a la DMD games).

No problem! I'm sure it was Bally or someone associated with Williams (unless it was Williams themselves), but I don't know if that table was one that would be worth chasing down a license for. I don't think it's ever been considered "great", which I think would be the one crucial bullet point in getting a table that requires any kind of license (only exception being Elvira, where I get the impression she allowed her likeness to be used for free. Mucho respect to her if that's the case). That's why I'm not holding my breath for something like Baywatch (but am a little more hopeful on The Shadow).

Speaking of No Good Gofers, I broke 30 million on that table.

That's one of the tables I just can't get into. Almost all I warm up to eventually, but that... I dunno, it's just *too* goofy and comical, I guess? Even Funhouse has a kind of wicked sense to it (for what'd be considered a "childish" theme) but Gofers always just feels annoying to me. I should focus on it and at least learn the rules, I've only really just hit the ball around somewhat randomly.

WOZ was like sensory overloaded, but it *felt* solid. the flippers had a real oomph to them and the ball flew around that thing. i'm not sure about the LCD either, but then I was too distracted by the RGB LEDs all over the table and the numerous toys (it was like looking at the Twilight Zone table for the first time) and details to even keep track of the ball.

JJP are doing the hobbit as their second table. I wonder if it's going to be as opulent as WOZ. I should also note how much I secretly love the Oz license.

Ugh, that's what I was concerned with. AC/DC is good in that regard because there's a clear focus on music, so there's never really that much going on with the DMD or flashing lights on the playfield. Anything that pulls focus away from the ball itself is a bad thing, IMO. That said, I'm glad to hear that it's a solid feeling table... maybe Stern will lift their game. With any luck, maybe these small producers popping up (wasn't someone else working on a relatively wide-release table as well?) will push Williams into making low-numbers tables as well. I'd love to see Ritchie back there.

Shame to hear that JJP's second license is The Hobbit. Not something that would lend itself to a great theme, plus the fact that the movie never hung around for that long after it came out (compared to LotR).

I honestly think I'd be good at nutting out layouts for tables... I should try my hand at just mucking around with something on a bit of paper or the iPad, see what I can come up with.

I think Gofers has that Caddyshack kind of appeal to the humor, but that's just me. All that's missing is Bill Murray imagining that cindarella story...

If the new iCade support is making your iOS PA crash, update to the latest iOS version (6.something.something) and that should fix it. Worked for me.

I like the iCade support, yet there's a little bit of a delay, which is kind of a killer. But maybe I'm just not used to it yet.

Wasn't there talk of a Addams Family table at one time?

I would support that kick starter in a heartbeat. Honestly, that is my favorite pinball of all-time.

Nope, never. People have hoped for it, but Raul Julia's estate is supposedly the biggest cunt known to man, not allowing his likeness to be used for anything since his death (I think even some movies have been held back from re-release on different formats because of this). I suppose they might be able to get someone else to do it and revoice him and appear as his likeness (or maybe use the likeness of the original Gomez?) but that could cost a metric fuckload to to, if that was a viable option.
