Eh, it's good to have it for the new page.

And yeah, I love the tune that Serraxor did for us - it's gotten us through 300 episodes. Just putting it out there to see if mixing it up might work too. That's all. Same with the album art. A refresh is in order. While I like the NES cart visuals, it's a bit crowded and we're not really a retro podcast which is what some might get outta that artwork.

Yeah, I just wanted to show my appreciation for the theme because I don't think it ever got the cred it it deserves. I don't remember there being much fanfare when it was first used.

I checked the thread on your forums, and one gentlemen posted a 15 minute medley of the work he's done. Many of those would work great as a new theme song.

I can't believe we're almost at 400 episodes. It seems like yesterday that Rich Grisham was hosting the 300th episode (which turned out to be one of the better episodes you guys have done). That you have 8000 listeners now is a testament to the power of sticking with something, week in week out. I hope you guys continue to find value in doing the podcast.

Sometimes I forget how...uh...seasoned you guys are until we get a discussion like that Digital Foundry one.

By the way, are you sick of chip tune stuff for intros?

I've been playing Tomb Raider (2013) for the first time. For some reason I keep getting visions of Greg. I think maybe it's because he was a big proponent for this game at the time and I'm playing it because of this podcast's impressions and good will for it. But maybe not.

I guess with that kind of time limit I should try doing a couple intros. Would be nice to mess around with a DAW again for fun, and for a good cause!

I appreciate what you're going for with the cold opening CJ, but I don't think it really works if you never introduce everyone. Would put new listeners off if anything.

*bumping this so CJ can post all dat info and links*

And yeah, if you want to keep your fond memories of Mario Kart 64, do NOT go back and play it. The framerate hurts the controls really badly and it ends up feeling like crap to play. I spent last month replaying all MK's and MK64 is the only one I couldn't squeeze any fun out of.

Episode 395: Furious Karting

I liked Greg Ford at the time but have you listened to those old P1P episodes recently? Does not hold up

I'll say it - Greg Ford was never that good

I never really felt it either. He's like the podcast equivalent of the buddy who crashes on your couch after a rough divorce. Just kinda hanging around. I have memories of him being checked-out enough during recording that he was constantly shaken out of whatever Madden game he was involved in at the time to speak. I'd like to think I'd be able to focus on a conversation for the hour or two a week I knew I was going to be there. Super Mario Land notwithstanding.

CJ how the fuck you gonna re-use an episode title? You used this one before.

I love that stock music so much.

Alernate title: Kurious Farting.

I'm more upset that our PR team still doesn't know I'm on episode 12 of Generation 16, not episode 11 :(

I don't know about you guys but I'm getting kind of tired of this whole "Mike having a life outside of the podcast" thing. You guys might have to stage an intervention, this reckless reordering of priorities is a short path to destruction.

Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii miss Greg Ford!

It's definitely true that you can get caught up in the moment of playing a new game that you're really enjoying and make some hyperbolic statements. However, I honestly think that after a few months or so of a game's release the bigger factor that influences "best _____ of all-time" comments is nostalgia.

Mario Kart is a good example. If you stack up Mario Kart 64 against MK8 there is absolutely no measure whatsoever by which 64 is a better game (with the possible exception of battle mode). The graphics, performance, tracks, character selection, physics, music, and item distribution are all notably worse. I know, I know, this isn't a "fair" comparison, but how else is someone supposed to defend the view that the latest entry in a series is better than whatever old game you're putting on some untouchable pedestal? I guess the obvious response would be a simple measure of fun, but how likely is it that Phil will ever have more fun with a Zelda game than LttP? Is that really fair to newer entries in the series? Like you guys said, time and place play a huge role, but to be honest I think there are times when people allow them to play too huge a role. If you never allow a newer entry in a long running series to have a shot at dethroning the king then of course it never will.

Is it really so crazy to think that TLoU is one of the best games ever made, or that SM3DW, a game that combines the best elements of the 2D and 3D Mario games, is the best Mario game? Can I fit any more rhetorical questions into this post?

I guess for me personally I like to appreciate the classics of old (and I have a lot of nostalgia for many of them) without allowing myself to get to a point where it's impossible for any game to come along and take their spot in my personal list of all-time greats. I think there are a lot more people caught up in nostalgia out there than folks who praise the latest Mario game for being the best ever a few months after release.

Link to the Past is probably still the best Zelda game though. ;)

I don't think it's unfair to compare old vs newer games. F-Zero GX is better than F-Zero X in almost every way, but they play almost identically and I end up preferring X because of the tracks and music.

Mario Kart 64, otoh, is just a bad, bad game with awful controls. Even SMK and Super Circuit are more playable by modern standards.

Also, LttP is overrated, 3D World is too easy to be considered the best Mario and The Last of Us is not a game.

I loved the Blake Harris interview; now I need to read the book.

Thanks guys!

Planning to listen later. My interest in the book dropped off a really steep cliff when Greg started talking about how it was written as a narrative. I took a quick peek at the Amazon preview, will go back later. Doesn't seem so bad, but it's not really how I want my history packaged.

Great interview. I'm still curious how he went about getting certain people onboard with his project and what they were like to hang out with an interview (SOJ's mercurial boss was an interesting story, though) -- maybe you can delve into those things if you have him on again? He was as good at answering your questions as he was at asking you guys questions. Time for a new 4th chair?
