The Player 1 Podcast Topic

Still sore I didn't win this last time around with these three near-perfect concepts...

I like this one so much, it still deserves a win!

Man the theme song is ingrained in my Brian. I know it changed before but it's so synonymous with the podcast.

That said, I'd love a change.

I would say without a doubt far and away my favourite podcast, but rfn is getting very close in a short time.

But they're Nintendo focused so you have the upper hand.

Walking Dead Season 2 Episode 3 is out - a double episode 2 and 3 spoiler cast?

I remember you guys talking about Season 1 and how you liked getting it episodically - I played Walking Dead Season 1 all in short time span and loved it. Not really liking getting dished out an episode so far between releases. I forget what's happening.

New episode!

Wow a remarkably good episode this week.

Very good serious discussion on the topics.

But mostly, I wanted to chime in that not enough credit was given for Mike's "Filthy O'Bald" comment.

Arthur's comments are not surprising, the fact that at least 50% of the P1P crew still listens to Rebel FM is. I'm all for a little masochism now and then but come on, gentlemen!

I think of it as The Soup. They watch all the shit TV, and distill it down to something I can laugh at. Mike is performing a service here.

The funny thing is that one of Rebel FM's hosts worked on one of the garbage indie games that hit PS4, and one of the founders of the podcast is responsible for bringing a whole lot more!

you get the feeling once Mattrick left, everyone else at Microsoft breathed a sigh of relief. like, ah now we can finally focus on games.

I disagree. I think Microsoft as a whole (not just Mattrick) - though perhaps Ballmer Microsoft - would have LOVED to 'take over the living room' in the way the Xbox One was designed to do. Now that that was on the road to almost-certain failure they had to reverse course in an unprecedented way to salvage some kind of business out of this thing. Perhaps now that Ballmer is out, Mattrick is out, AND the system has proven to be kind of a dud it's allowed to just be a games-first machine. But Microsoft as a whole and their corporate goals aren't "make a video game machine."

It's a fascinating situation with the Xbox One. The machine was designed around a vision that is a decade behind the times; "owning the living room" is nuts considering any living room you go into anymore has each person completely engrossed in their own screen. If there are 5 people in a room, there are (minimum) 5 screens in use, from youngsters through grannies and everyone in between. "Owning the living room" would have been great in 2003; in 2014 it sounds like something an old, out-of-touch newspaper baron would say!

So now you have this machine that is being re-positioned as something it wasn't supposed to be. Will that negatively impact it moving forward for developers? For consumers?

Will there be enough legacy 360 generation people who weren't early adopters of the PS4/Xbox One launch systems who will now be more inclined to get the One? I think there are many, many people that don't know or care about much of the things we discuss here; they just see the 'next Xbox' at a price they like and will go for it. Not sure though.

Yeah, this sounds right. Just my anti-Mattrick-wide bias kicking in, from hanging out on gaf too much. :) The MS xbox philosophy is clearly the work of more than one man's mindset.

btw, funny Mik cause this morning in my shower i saw my roommate's, washrag, i said to myself, "I wash myself with a rag on a stick."

For a long time, It's been pretty obvious that most of the people on Rebel FM just let Gies say whatever he likes and never cross him. I'm one of those crazy people that like or liked Gies but this comment is too far. A lot of work went into those "Garbage" games. I haven't listened to this episode of Rebel FM but if nobody called Gies out on that comment, I may have to stop listening. Thats especially for Anthony when he now knows how hard it is to put out a game and has felt the sting of people canning it in reviews. I feel like I'm going to be left speechless when I do hear it.

Edit: Finally had a chance to listen to Rebel FM. Gies was no worst that he usually is. It was more a reference to PC and PS4 getting a lot of titles that don't matter. I get his opinion but I personally like all the small games. I prefer to let the customer dig through and find the gems. Still not crazy about the use of the word "garbage" when referring to peoples work. Also, Sessler is in that episode.

Yes, it is nuts. But that's been Microsoft's corporate mantra for forever - Windows everywhere. Windows on all devices, all screens. Even when it hasn't worked out for them they kept beating that drum while Ballmer was there (and he only really departed last year, after the XBO was unveiled). I think with the 360 they thought they owned it - Kinect was successful, they got people to pay for XBL Gold to use streaming video services.

The XBO was seemingly designed in a vacuum where Microsoft drank their own kool-aid and thought their brand was strong enough that they could mandate digital, enact DRM/ always-on, take over the user's television and get them to set up a large brick of a camera in front of their TV. People didn't go for it. Oops.

To be fair, Microsoft's not the only corporate entity with aspirations of "owning" all the services you use. Google would like to. Amazon too. Cable companies would LOOOVE to. That is just not the reality of things in 2014, and generally these other companies at least have focus on a particular thing to build from and they're not selling a $500 box. The XBO, not being backwards compatible, was less building off of the 360 as starting completely anew and with a focus on the services that people weren't willing to pay a $100 premium for. Double oops.

So now you have this machine that is being re-positioned as something it wasn't supposed to be. Will that negatively impact it moving forward for developers? For consumers?

To me not for developers unless their sales continue to lag through the fall. For consumers - the bad press of the last year won't be erased by one announcement. Microsoft's gonna have to prove that the XBO is a platform worth sinking your money into via a sustained and varied calendar of releases and not just sequels and retreads. And get demo kiosks out there.

This is true but the tastes of those people are often determined or shaped by the opinions of people who DO know and care much about the things the hardcore discuss. That's going to be the most difficult to overcome.

I don't understand how anyone who has listened to Rebel FM for more than a few episodes isn't on to Gies.

I somehow was able to keep up with Rebel FM (regular, but not every week) until sometime around the SimCity "event." I finally realized that I was sort of making myself listen to the show out of habit and that I couldn't take listening to Gies anymore. I could swear he didn't start off that bad, he had his opinions, and seemed to have a decent analytical vocabulary, but as time went on it's like he adapted some kind of arrogant persona, sort of like Shane Bettenhausen from the early 1UP days, but without an ounce of Shane's likeable personality, humor, or... real intelligence.

Agreed on them failing to sell the Kinect with good software- it's kind of ridiculous that they launched with zero first-party Kinect games. Even the PS4 launched with fucking Playroom and they didn't even put the camera in the box.

Everyone seemed to think that the Wii sold so well because of the gimmick, when in truth it sold well because:

A)It had an attention-grabbing gimmick
B)It launched with both "casual"(Wii Sports) and "core"(Twilight Princess) games that proved the gimmick's usefulness
C)It launched at a very affordable price point, relatively speaking

Both the XBone and the Wii U did A but failed horribly at B and C.

In my eyes... my sexy, brushed-aluminum-wishing-wells-of-truth eyes... where was I? Oh, XBOX One! Simply put, Microsoft wanted to take over the living room with a device that is incredibly not simply-put. How hard is it to use a Roku or a digital cable box? They are so simple that even the angry Australian guy (Jacko!) from those Energizer commercials can use them. If you need Deep Blue to help you navigate a living room device, you've already lost. And once you've lost, you're exiled to Nova Scotia. So it is written in the Denny's breakfast menu...

As for Arthur "Chopsticks" Gies, I find his arrogance... amusing. He ranted in the latest episode about Microsoft's business practices for so long that I forgot that Sassy Sessler was even there. And I don't know if Mik does this, but I will openly argue with my listening device when Arthur says something eye-rollingly absurd. Arguing with voice recordings is a true sign of intelligence. Tony Robbins says so!

Why do I still listen to Rebel FM? Habit and morbid curiosity, I guess. How many Arthur arguments will Matt cave on in this episode? Will Anthony give game design advice from that one book he promised to read for his job? Can Mitch speak at a normal volume? It's a rollercoaster ride, man! I need to make some new habits...

Random note about the brief Halo 4 discussion. Spartan Ops did get a full season, the only issue was that the first half wasn't very good.

They did vastly improve it by the second half of the season but I imagine it was too little too late for a lot of people & honestly it still wasn't as good as regular campaign content. The CG parts of every episode looked really good but they often had very little to do with what you did in the gameplay segments, overall it was a cool idea poorly executed.

Someone should frame that and nail it to Don Mattrick's taint.

Sewart for MVP of this episode, you brought it brother.

What happened to the eggheads at the end?

Guys, you have a great theme song. Maybe it's time for a new one, but before retiring this one give whoever composed it some props. It's catchy, cheerful, and you can start talking over it at any point and let it fade into the background without it feeling disjointed. How about putting out the call for some original outro music?

What, a new episode?
