Listening to the new podcast....only manchildren whining about faceplates who want the regular new 3ds? Really? That's really an opinion of a human being on a gaming podcast?

Not listened to the podcast for a good few months but...

Been starting my shifts at work at 6am and podcasts have been my sole companion. I will listen to the latest episode tomorrow morning, fuck Giant Bomb GoTY.
 
Player One Podcast calling people manchildren, huh? In unrelated news, I just finished listening to the latest KettleCast, in which they called pots black.

But seriously, doesn't the smaller form factor and lower price of the n3DS count for anything? It's more than just the faceplates.

If this is how P1P treats its listeners, I'm going to have to take my nonexistent Patreon donation to other podcasters that deeply respect their audience, like Arthur Gies.
 
I'm shocked that Phil of all people seems incapable of understanding why someone wouldn't automatically want the biggest thing they can get.

Edit: I just remembered that noted corporate apologist Phil Theobald derided the people who had the audacity to request that Nintendo release Xenoblade in North America. Remember kids, when you're dissatisfied with a situation, just shut up and take it because a giant, faceless multinational knows what you want more than you do.
 
I wanted the smaller one. For ease of transport in a pocket, for the faceplates, and the larger-than-regular screens. But, I have an XL anyway and if we could only have one of the new 3DSes - the XL's still good. :)
 
I disagree with the guys on the whole man children thing. I've always preferred the smaller 3DS for the better picture. I had an XL, and I did not like how the blown up pixels looked.

On final reflection, I went with Bully. Grim Fandango and Majora's Mask are just coming out and will be the first time a lot of people get to play them, and I think some breathing room would be a good thing.

Also, was there never a compilation of TWD: Season 2? I know we got spoiled in 2013 with BioShock Infinite and The Last of Us, but I love the spoiled in 60 minutes episodes and was sad we didn't get one in 2014.

Edit: Now I'm wishing I voted for Resident Evil after seeing the Remaster. Like I said, tough poll.
 
Proud to have cast the first vote, even though I don't think my selection (Grim Fandango) will win. I just think it's the one most likely to have all four guys in equally on the conversation.
 
I voted for Majora's Mask for Game Club, even though I think a couple of the guys didn't seem enthusiastic about it in the episode after it was released. I'm guessing everyone had to OK the list, right?

I can't wait to play Grim Fandango, but I don't see what there would be to talk about beyond "Wasn't this part funny?" and "Which FAQ did you guys use to get past this section?"
 
What I thought was really funny about Greg's "manchild" comment is that he then goes on to list the Amiibos he's planning on purchasing. I actually snorted when I heard it. Nothing against Amiibos, I just don't think he should calling anyone else a man child when he's buying actual toys for himself...

Other than that, good episode.
 
I voted for Majora's Mask, but I am almost regretting that decision. I think Grim Fandango would be a better choice because of it's focus on story. That would leave a little more to talk about. Plus, I think the whole crew would enjoy that one. Regardless I cannot wait to see what gets picked and I eagerly await the episode. When are you guys thinking about putting it out?

You realize the entire show is based on toys, right?

The manchild comment was mostly just me taking a shot at CJ :) Honestly I'd say we're all manchildren in that we're spending hours every week talking about video games and related toys.
 
Mike and I continue to have lots of things in common - LBP3 rules (well except the - I presume to be - last level which is too old school - more something for the rest of the P1P crew I reckon ;) ), DriveClub is just really good (and rainbows are out now!), and we both had an Atari 800 back in the day (so we're both ancient ;) ). I really loved BMX Simulator on that, remember that one? And Bounty Bob Strikes Back was my favorite platformer back then. I also programmed it with housework assignments until the tape drive ran for 10 minutes to load all the data, only to end up giving me an 'out of memory error'. 48K for the not so much win!

I personally think the Arrow series is very B-grade, bad acting, bad scripts, and only kind of amusing for the B-grade hero name dropping that happens there. I can only watch them in a state of mildly supressed consciousness, like when I'm in bed with the flu (watched season 1 like that half a year ago, and season 2 like that last weekend).

That said, it's not much worse than Criminal Minds, and people seem to love that as well ... so I'm probably not a good indicator.

As for the reviews, metacritic, etc. - I'm experimenting with www.techingames.net to do a little bit more, breaking down games by features (I'm going to enhance some of the gameplay parts with background on some game-design reading I'm doing, so I'll add categories for Emergent vs Progressive gameplay and such soon, etc.). Still hope one day someone gets what I'm doing there, but right now it's ... a select group, let's just say. ;)

I also added an automatic listing per feature of the first game version recorded for that feature. My dream eventually is that you could see what game pioneered what feature on what platform when for instance, and show a graph of the popularity of that feature through the years.

Maybe I should start a kickstarter or patreon and just hire some students ;)

Anyway, carry on with the great podcast. I'm a long-long-time fan.

Darn, may have to relisten the episode, as I think I've forgot about half the things I wanted to say while listening. I should make notes ...
 
Greg, "Manchildren" is harsh. EU gets standard new 3DS and we don't. Not everyone likes the XL. The screen is actually better on the standard over the. XL. The new XL and old XL screen is almost the same quality. This is coming from people who bought the new XL. And yes, we like faceplates and customization. There are some really nice designs. It's better than the junk XL LE designs.

While it may be good for Nintendo's bottom line, that means jackshit for consumers.

Nintendo's bottom line is really the most important thing here, though. Is it the most consumer-friendly element of the equation? Not at all. But the simple fact of the matter is that Nintendo will have a bunch of old hardware to move when the N3DSXL comes in. Undercutting it with the smaller N3DS not only reduces the chance of moving that stock quickly, but creates a more confusing retail situation for consumers who aren't as savvy as us. And it doesn't mean "jack shit for the consumers." Nintendo does not rule the market like it has in the past. There needs to be a reasonable expectation that the market can support four different versions of the same hardware, at least in the short term.

Four different versions of the exact same hardware but all with different limitations. That's an awful lot to have to explain to a casual consumer who just wants a 3DS. This one doesn't come with a power cord. This one has a wider 3D range. This one doesn't run games in 3D. These faceplates only work with this version of the hardware.

I think limiting the confusion and letting the market settle a bit makes perfect sense. Who knows? Maybe the smaller hardware could still hit this market.

I know there are legitimate reasons to want the smaller version, and I'm sorry if I was too harsh.

I didn't read your explanations up above before i posted but now i understand the comment more. Yea, I was bit offended since I was pretty pissed about not getting the standard new ones. I've been waiting for that and not even getting one standard model just irks me to no end. I might even import the EU one down the line if we never get it. Region-locking is what really irritates me about Nintendo. if it was region-free, I would import asap.
 
It's important to note (I thought I said this in the show but maybe I didn't) that Nintendo *doesn't* sell 4 SKUs of 3DS in the US. They sell two - the 3DS XL and 2DS. The "new" 3DS XL will likely replace the old. The regular 3DS hasn't been on store shelves actively for a while, maybe over a year?

If Nintendo knows the XL variant sells better in the US and retailers are not keen on stocking faceplates, then I'm fine with that.
 
The New 3DS name should not be confusing if and when Nintendo stops making original 3DS which they seem to have and 3DS XL which is probably pretty soon.

So when a person who is unfamiliar with the differences asks for a 'New' 3DS, stores will eventually only have the New 3DS in stock in anyway.

Unless you're Gamestop and you're selling shitty refurbs and trying to sell them as good as new I suppose.

I think it's unfair to compare the sales of the original 3DS to the XL. Not only does it have the stigma of being wildly overpriced at launch, its battery was awful, its screen was not as good, and overall I think it looks kind of ugly. All of these have been fixed in the new 3DS.

Also, just because they sell the smaller version doesn't mean they necessarily have to sell the face plates along with it.

But it's not like you guys have the power to do anything so I don't know why I'm complaining at you.

There are still 3DSXL units out there, and Nintendo currently sells the 2DS. If they added the N3DS and the N3DSXL they would effectively have four different versions of the same hardware on the market for as long as it takes to sell through old stock.
 
I got an iPhone 6 Plus over the regular 6 and I regret it every day. It's nice when I'm actually using it, but it's an unwieldy inconvenience in all other circumstances. For something I intend to have on my person at all times, bigger is not better for me.

That said, I'm not too concerned about the New 3DS issue right now because Nintendo has yet to show me why I would want either of them yet.
 
Even the regular iPhone 6 is a little bit too big to fit comfortably in a pocket.

I rarely use handheld consoles outside of my home and there I'm not as sensitive to size. Weight might still become an issue though.

Edit: The only reason I would consider to pick a N3DS over a N3DSXL is the colorful buttons.
 
Yeah, that's actually the reason I was glad they aren't releasing the smaller one in the US. I probably would've bought the small one for the looks then never used it.

That's kinda where I'm at with the thing right now. I'm hoping that I get used to it or at least the nice-when-using counterbalances the unwieldy-inconvenience.
