The Player 1 Podcast Topic

I did love the contrast of CJ being mocked about the Apple watch not doing anything important and Phil buying a similar priced toy that does even less.

More importantly, mik, have you had Epic's Big Bad Baptist? I think that is my #1.

Well, the Apple Watch segment was as horrible as I feared. Surprised nobody brought up that you have to charge your watch as well.

You mean it went horribly right. It went exactly as I was expecting and how previous "CJ's buying a new Apple thing" bits have gone. I threw it on the outline and waited for someone to mention it. Couldn't have gone any better.

I can't believe they managed to have a apple watch segment and the guy who is buying the apple watch is the only one who didn't seem like an idiot.

Why not?

I will write a topic about how awesome early Marvel TF comics was.

Don't worry CJ, I'm with you. You don't need a reason, you're welcome to try and t and Brit a chance. After all, no-one saw the "need" get a music player, or a smart phone, he'll even a mobile phone at all before that.

We all draw lines over what is utility and what is just fanciful desire. There's no right or wrong.

I'm willing to give the watch a chance. It intrigues me and I cannot even answer why I really want one either and I'm also aware that it's stupid to get the first gen as there WILL be a significant leap in both form and function come the second gen. It will be why I think I'll go for the cheapest I can initially though. I can aspire to a nicer one when they get better. I'm far from an annual upgrader as well. Kept my iPhone 3G for 4 years and my iphone 5 will be coming on 3 this year.

"If I'm spending that much on a watch I'd rather just buy a nice watch" is being an idiot?

Good to know.

I've tried most of Epic's beers and they've all been at least pretty good. It's worth mentioning, though, that I don't really love porters and stouts and such. I lean to IPAs and tripels for the most part. I need something as sour and bitter as I am.

It was more the "letting the guy who spends hundreds on kids toys shit on the guy buying some other dumb thing" go for so long before finally, and hilariously, calling him out.

If the plan was to let him keep going with his fisher price shovel then well done.

I'm definitely getting a smart watch eventually. It's not there yet (for me anyway), but I really like the idea of having notifications instantly even if my phone is in my bag or in a different room in the house. I think it's going to be a huge hit.

That said, some people don't even check their e-mails at all so I can see it being completely useless to them.

I really liked the apple watch part. CJ always takes these in very good humour.

This was a great episode. So glad to have everyone back on.

Ps4 wise, I'm keen to hear how Bloodborne sits with you all.

The worst part is that my LEGO sets are pretty much designed around obsolescence. Every year I have to toss each set out and replace it with another, mostly-identical-but-with-a-few-added-features set.

That, and I can't use my LEGO sets unless I'm also carrying around my phone.

I will give the geniuses running Apple this: They found a way to make people excited about spending hundreds of dollars for the privilege of not having to use the other device that they paid hundreds of dollars for six months prior.

I'm torn. I like the Apple Watch AND Lego. Whose side do I pick? TELL ME

Totally. Why stop there? :D

Apple found a way to get people to spend hundreds of dollars on an "iPhone" when they probably have a perfectly good computer that checks email, surfs the web and plays games. Who are these people that are so important their electronic mail cannot wait until they arrive home or back to their desk to reply? And some of those same people go on to buy iPads that are even more expensive than the (subsidized) phone! What! They do the same thing and even run the same apps! BVVP! Why would anyone want to buy a bigger iPhone - they need a larger screen to see the emails they're so important to receive? And why would anyone want to upgrade their iPhone ever - the one they have doesn't check email fast enough? Doesn't make calls good enough? Apple Pay? If I still have to pull something out of my pocket why not make it my wallet/credit cards? Swiping them in that machine is so difficult!

Even more hilarious, the Apple Watch *doesn't* do everything that the phone does - AND you have to have the phone on you (or near you, or on the same wifi network) for most of its functions to work! Bwahahahaha! And, you have to charge it every night. A watch! You have to take it off and plug it in. What kind of topsy-turvy universe have I stumbled into?!

But seriously, I'm buying the thing because I think its functions will be valuable (to me). Sometimes you buy things because you think you'll find utility in the purchase and other times you buy expensive LEGO sets or Amiibo or Transformers or NES games because they're fun or you like toys or technology or Apple products. As long as you're not going into hock for it - what's the problem?

Ah yes, so much utility in those legos

I recently organised all my son's loose bricks into 12 boxes with 5 compartments each. Lots of work, but now at least I know for sure that I can't make that watch. Or at the very least not in those colors. ;)

I also like sites like rebrickable, which allow you to see if you can build other sets. You rarely can, but at least you know which parts you mis and could buy them, or improvise. Also, people can post custom designs, and those are often using the same bricks from one set (aka alternate builds).

Cool stuff! Much cooler than the iWatch, for sure. ;) I'd probably sooner get a wrist-band that can hold my iPhone, or a dedicated sports device. It needs to be 150 or less before it becomes a serious contender.

All that work and they won't even alert you to the legos induced bank overdraft email.

I'm with ya on the IPAs (not so much tripels). I'm picky about my stouts and porters and think coffee beers are the worst.

Is anyone else playing it? Hopefully someone will get it just because there's not much else out right now.

Alternately it'd be cool to have Pete Dodd on to talk about it.

As will be revealed in episode 437, we will all be playing it. And I do not think any of us have previous experience with the Souls series of any great note.

I'm sure you guys will love it, you have good taste after all. :)

I don't know anything about Bloodborne (I'm on full blackout), but based on the previous games I'd give you three tips:

1. Much like Rogue Legacy, you'll die a lot. Take that as part of the game, it's not like other games where you're supposed to repeat a checkpoint until you beat it.

2. Also like Rogue Legacy it's possible you'll end up in an area that's too hard for your character. Instead of getting frustrated just go somewhere else.

3. The game's visuals are incredible, but they're not there just for show. If you see pools of blood around area it's quite likely that there's something very dangerous around, so pay attention to everything and don't take anything for granted.

Enjoy!

2. Also like Rogue Legacy it's possible you'll end up in an area that's too hard for your character. Instead of getting frustrated just go somewhere else.

This is really good advice, I've been on blackout too so maybe the structure of this one is different, but in all 3 Souls games it's easy to stumble into an area you shouldn't be in yet.

The games are demanding, but the difficulty gets exaggerated. If you ever feel like you're just beating your head against a wall and there is no way you can beat an enemy, you've probably taken a wrong turn.

I played Demons Souls until the first boss. The slug thing. I know.

I played much more of Dark Souls. I loved almost everything about it. Except that it wouldn't let me love it. Come to think of it, that sums up the last year or so of my life. :P

Hesitant to play any of the souls games, due to time constraints. I'm interested to hear what they say about Bloodborne. Tried Demon's Souls, but found that its mechanics/systems were a bit too obfuscated. I miss the days of instruction manuals that explained everything.

What level were you guys when you beat Rogue Legacy? I really like the game, except I'm not appreciating the grind. Beating the first and second bosses was really fun, but I'm not feeling fighting another round of palette swapped enemies to get strong enough to fight the third boss.

I'm level 100, which seems pretty high, maybe I just suck at the game.

I was at level 130 when I finished the game.

Honestly, as the game moves on you really need to pay attention to the type of character you have and play to their strengths. I also dumped a lot of money into my attack, armor and life stats near the end of the game.

When I got to the final boss I only ever attempted to fight him if I had a Barbarian Queen or King. If neither of them were an option, I'd spend that generation earning a bunch of gold in the castle and building my stats a tiny bit more until I could get a Barbarian and fight the boss again.
