The Player 1 Podcast Topic

A thoughtful and intelligent discussion about the 2DS? I didn't think it was possible.

Can't wait to buy a couple of them as Christmas presents.

Mike how hard were you biting your tongue during the Kickstarter talk? I counted a couple times where you had an opening for a nice snide zinger that you passed on.

Good show, even fit in some Gies love there towards the end.

Refresh my memory, which next gen systems are you guys getting? Other than Greg/Xbone which we already knew.

I believe it's -

Greg - PS4, Xbox One
CJ - PS4, Xbox One
Mike - PS4
Phil - PS4

But I'll likely cancel my Xbox One preorder. There's not much at launch I really want there - anything I'm really interested in playing is multiplatform on PS4 as well. And with Wind Waker, Mario and Donkey Kong coming out on Wii U plus a new Ratchet on PS3 right around that time I'll have plenty to play without an Xbox.

You SURE you want a new Ratchet? That series has fallen hard.

This one being a traditional platforming Ratchet where the videos I've seen so far look amazing? Yes. I will take it. Shame it's not on PS4 but whatever!

I'm hoping it's better, but I'm also not buying it until I hear from multiple sources that it's good again. Ratchet's had a weird...evolution.

Fallen hard? Only when doing non-traditional Rathcet games. The proper games on the PS3 were the best in the series.

The early ones, yeah. I enjoyed those. It's just been a while since I played something good with the Ratchet name.

Speaking of opinions, that Mega Man clone looks...uh, kind of awful. I don't mean the game I just mean the art. Looks like a cheapo newgrounds flash game. Is one of the stretch goals hiring an actual art director?

Thanks CJ. It'll be a lot of fun listening to this show when the systems launch.

This project is paying people I like so I'll keep my mouth shut but I hope in 6 months people step back and look at the project with a more critical eye, especially in light of Inafune's comments about the japanese game industry.

Also, I guess I'm the only one annoyed at how terrible the pax panel was. You have one of the biggest names in gaming on stage and you ask dumb questions like why is megaman blue and then spend half the time advertising his new kickstarter.

I've enjoyed a lot of ios sequels significantly less than the originals. Temple Run 2, Infinity Blade 2, PvZ2...

It might just be that the sequels run a lot worse on my device, but the whiff of monetisation and the sense that they might be one-trick-ponies also play a large part.

The 2 are connected. Let it never be said that they can't snark with the best of them, but this episode (and most of them) are rather upbeat.

Also, I noticed that Gies aside, there were very few gimmicks and callbacks in recent episodes. I liked all of those things, but the extended break from them avoids shutting down discussion and has produced some fresh jokes. Great job, everyone!

Now say that in your Bane voice!

Who doesn't need more Sewart projected into their ear holes?

By popular demand, we introduce a special episode of the Press Row Podcast where we count down the Top Ten Racing Game lists of two of our favorite racing game fans. Joining host Rich Grisham this week is Greg Sewart of the Player One Podcast and Generation 16 along with Pete Dodd of the Doddcast and the #PS4NODRM Twitter movement. The three agree and disagree on several choices, and go into great lengths about what truly makes a great racing game. If you’ve ever loved racing games, this is the show for you.

Don't worry, Pete Dodd is probably balanced out by Rich Grisham so instead of the worst or best podcast, this one is likely totally even keel.

I haven't listened yet but if they don't mention NASCAR Kart I'm going to come back and delete this post.

I know Phil brings up buying Giana Sisters from time to time, but I don't recall if there was an episode where he went in-depth on what's so great about it. I'm thinking of getting it on Wii U eShop today and was wondering if anyone else here has played it and can recommend it at $15.

No NASCAR Kart.

Anyway wow that was a great show. Forza Horizon at the #2 spot was an inspired choice, Greg.

I really liked it!

It definitely is--for people who like sports games. But, if memory serves, GhaleonQ's love of 4th String was based almost solely on its utter lunacy.

Indeed. Todd Zuniga's is a voice that can't be limited to the literary world, and I miss the Fitches like I miss Greg Ford. ...And I guess I miss Greg Ford from that podcast, too.

I do love sports games discussion, though, and Player 1 and the aforementioned all break down the sports I don't care about (football, baseball, basketball) in a way I can understand. I don't NEED Sewart telling me that hockey games are still better than they've historically been, though I always like to hear it.

Gorgeous graphics, tight control, fantastic soundtrack, and a clever character switch mechanic that lends itself to some really fun level design.

No Phil this week?

I see how it is. He makes it big and immediately turns his back on the fanbase that got him there :(
This week it was more of a "the wife is working so I'm watching Finn all day" sort of thing.

Delightful episode this week, I really enjoyed it. Everyone being somewhat earnest was nice.

is the giana sisters game on the ds any good? i ordered it because it always gets brought up on the podcast. I guess it arrives today so I shall soon find out

I barely wanna listen to the show without Phil in it.

Killjoy Mike is such a hypocrite. "Of course I never watched the new Mickey Mouse cartoons because I'm a grown man! Now excuse me while I play these whimsical, mascot platformers."

I don't even remember mentioning new Mickey Mouse cartoons--unless you mean the redesign or whatever that the guys mentioned. I genuinely hadn't heard of that. I may just travel in the wrong circles.

Surely One Direction has a crossover with the house of mouse though?

I love it. It's pretty simple, but it's quite a bit of fun and way charming.

You're sweet.

Here's the first of the new Mickey Mouse cartoons for you not to watch. I'm kinda bummed that they're Flash animated, but I still enjoy 'em.
