The polarizing reactions to My Little Pony

Oh please, you are in this thread arguing about my fucking Little Pony not being a great cartoon. A grown man arguing about My Little Pony.....seriously.
So basically regardless of whether I like MLP or hate it I am sexually-attracted to ponies. Seriously, what the fuck?

Sorry for actually bothering to write something more than concrete than 'lol it's girly shit' and happening to give a shit about actually talking about it in relation to animation for a bit if it rubs you the wrong way so much. Christ.

so, you wanna come up with a bunch of twin peaks macros and spam them in the threads where they're barely relevant?

also, I'm an 8 year old girl who likes Twin Peaks, a show made for grown men. is that weird?

So those of you who rage on those who are enjoying MLP, what is your view on the people enjoying the new Thundercats?

Almost everyone in the fandom (at least on GAF) are in it because they genuinely like the show but I don't think it's wrong the suggest that the outrageousness of a My Little Pony show actually being good at least plays some role in making the fandom what it is.

If the show were exactly the same but it weren't so obvious that the main demographic were little girls, I don't think things would quite the same.

I'm not denying anyone anything, it's just my suspicion

The suspicion is predicated on an assumption that adult people who like MLP are necessarily in an ironical frame of mind. It seems rude, rather pompous, in addition to being a rather untenable leap, to talk about other people's reactions to culture in that way. As if there is no freedom of interpretation or feeling.

The "consciously or sub-consciously" bit is trash.

Yes, yes it is.

I just think the memes and image macros liven up this place.
It would be boring without all the funny pictures and the reactions they cause.
I mean, the crazy fanbases are why I even post here in the first place.
Everyone here is absolutely fucking insane and I like that.

How so? Did i miss something or is it just because of comments such as "male voice actor is shit compared to the female one."?
I feel the creepy levels of obsession by both fanbases makes them about equal, really.

You're probably right.

But the new Thundercats hasn't reached the avatar and meme density that MLP reached back when it was really blowing up. So it isn't fair to directly compare them.

I'm gonna laugh when like, 5 or 10 years from now people will casually mention MLP as a pretty good cartoon and all this hate and tension will be forgotten and people will have moved on to fandoming another show.

I know very little about the new My Little Ponies cartoon but, traditionally, My Little Pony is a product aimed toward young girls. Most new-age pony hipsters probably don't even realize My Little Pony was a brand of toys originally, first and foremost. They were aimed toward little girls EXACTLY the same way Barbie dolls were aimed toward little girls and in the exact opposite way GI Joe and Transformers were aimed toward young boys. Go back and watch a commercial for the toys, it's extraordinarily obvious.

As a cartoon, the tradition followed, it was made for girls obviously. When boys were watching TMNT, Transformers, He-Man and shows like that. Little girls were watching shows like Strawberry Shortcake, Rainbow Brite, and My Little Pony. There was a very apparent distinction. Whether or not you want to break social barriers and watch shows aimed toward little girls is one thing but claiming that "My Little Pony" was a product for boys as well as girls is just ludicrous.

What I assume, again, not having seen the new cartoon, is that the creator of this new series injected that sort of humor that "resonates with the whole family" - like Spongebob Squarepants apparently did - so that moms and dads could watch the show with their little girl and not be totally bored to death like they were with the 80s version. After seeing the fan reaction on the internet she'd "confess" to making the show intentionally so both girls and boys can watch it when really I just think you pony guys relate with little girl humor better than boys/men did back in the 80s.

IMDB: Mary Elle Fanning was born on the 9th of April 1998

Vox-Pop is a notorious joke character.

Looking at actual girls discussed by CreepyGAF:

Victoria Justice: 18
Selena Gomez: 18
Ariana Grande: 18
Elizabeth Gillies: 18
Miranda Cosgrove: 18
Demi Lovato: 19
Jennette McCurdy: 19
Daniella Monet: 22
Alyson Michalka: 22

I could go on. (actually I couldn't, I think that's everyone)

We may have crossed wires but I just can't get my head around a grown man of 20 yo actually arguing for or against the merits of My Little Pony.

I grew up a kid of the 80's watching Transformers, GI Joe etc, etc. But I have no connection to My Little Pony because it was a show for girls. So I don't understand why men can be fans of it. I don't mean to upset people.

I didn't mean to offend you but this just seems strange to me but I don't want to judge you. I was just trying to understand it.

Apologises if I've rubbed you the wrong way.

That's kind of the whole point though. Why is the avatar and meme density so different?

kinda like when people think of furries when exposure of them reached a peak back in like 2003-05

It has always been like this.
It will always be like this. that is why entertainment companies have to consistently come up with new ideas and technologies. People always get bored of one thing and move to another.

Except that the fandom DOES know that.

In fact, there's this image macro of "what non-watchers see, what watchers see".

The whole popularity of MLP stems primarily from the fact that finally, something not shit from a series that is generally shit.

With that said, yeah the view is pretty biased. TMNT 80's is inane compared to the comics and the 2003 version, Transformers that is not Animated or Beast Wars is shit, and He-Man is one of the prime examples of lazy animation.

5 to 10 years is an awful long time for people to remember an internet fad

Thank you. This posts illuminates this thread with a new light.

Still strange to me though. Sorry 'pony GAF' but it is.

You are simply an incredibly shallow person and should feel bad.

If you think watching a show about ponies makes you a homosexual or a girl, then so be it. But realize there's nothing that inherently makes this a show for girls, besides your preconception that ponies are a subject matter fit only for girls. The show is well animated, has a slew of personable characters, has some actual humour in there, and is simply a heartwarming feel-good experience.

Do you refuse to watch any Disney movie featuring a princess because it's too girly? It would be a shame to miss out on great movies like The Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beat just because you were too shallow to see passed the title.

I'm going to laugh when in 5 years from now, a new witty flash animated Barbie cartoon comes on the air and a new breed of 20 year old male Barbie fans are born. Followed by the inevitable thread, "The polarizing reactions to Barbie".

Actually, maybe I'll be crying.

Most of the people (including me) who watch MLP watched and loved those shows that you mentioned going up. If the quality of the new MLP was of the same quality as it was before this generation, then I can see having the visceral reaction to males liking the show.

The team who works on the show have a great track record, working on shows that most, if not all of Gaf would consider great. (Samurai Jack, Dexter's Lab)

The thing about an enduring fandom though, is that once the detractors find another fandom to pick on, this fandom will just keep existing. It will always be there, but people wont care anymore, so trying to kill a particular fandom because you don't like it is rather pointless and a waste of your time.

I love that Cartoons are getting good again. Adventure Time, MLP, Thundercats. Avatar just a few years ago. Cartoons are fun to watch again. Sure there's a nostalgia aspect to it, but I'd put these shows over most the live-action shows on TV right now.

The "consciously or sub-consciously" bit is trash.

I'm merely using evidence culled from discussions of the show here on GAF. It also, yes, was a generalization. I think there's appeal based on many different factors, one of those being irony. The subconsciously bit was added because everyone's always trashing on so called 'hipster' types and there's a massive aversion to the term lately, therefore one would want to avoid stating they are taking part in something ironic, even if they are.

I think you need to calm down on my little bit of generalized speculation. I'm not trying to be pompous at all, I'm just exploring something I consider to be a valid approach based on reading the 'text' that is what I've seen about the fandom and what they say.

the real question here is
why do you care so much?
it doesn't actually effect you, so the only reason i can assume is that you have demons of your own that make you put other peoples interests down

Well the Thundercats aren't a bunch of 6 year old kids.

MLP's tend to act like six year old kids.

So it's hard not to view fans as being those who are attracted to six year old kids.

In a nutshell it's not as disturbing.

I wouldn't let an adult that watches this show anywhere near my kids.

To go along with my point, I'll freely admit that my love of Adventure Time has to do with nostalgia and irony. I'm a grown man who loves a nonsensical show aimed at young kids because honestly there isn't much adventure or randomness in my own life, I can live that out through the show. I come home from work or from a day of rather weighty discussions in class and sit down and watch a kid fight monsters with a talking dog.

My point is I'm not bashing on irony at all here. Irony is a good thing in our ever growing monotonous life that is supposed to essentially be a track to the cookie cutter white picket fence house.

Kind of wondered that myself.
People the world over are always preaching about equality and fair treatment of everyone regardless of race, color, nation, creed, etc, but when it comes down to it, human beings will always shun and hate certain groups they deem as unfit to exist. Everyone does it, and to say you don't is a fucking lie. Everyone has some kind of predetermined belief about someone else that causes them to think negatively of that person or group. It's just how we are.

But the mane cast of MLP tends to act like young adults. Jobs, responsibilities, etc. There are a few young characters, but they're not part of the mane cast.

Yeah they are cats with boobs. Thundercats fans are such furry fans but they refuse to admit it.

Seriously your entire argument is hilarious to read. What's next, playing shooters will make you a serial killer?
