The polarizing reactions to My Little Pony

We're talking about My little pony here.

The average male child would be ashamed to watch it.

In fact more male adults watch it than male children, since I don't hear them talking about it. (I work in a day care centre)

That should tell you something.

It tells me grown up males are comfortable with their sexuality and are able to look past silly male/female gender boundaries to enjoy what is generally a fun show. These men may actual like the show or may be feigning interest for their children's sake.

Little boys are only ashamed MLP to be caught MLP because adults constantly reenforce ridged male stereo types on them. It is sad what is acceptable for male to participate in is such a narrow defined role (you gotta be tough, no sissy shit), when in reality men's roles and interest run a wide gamete.

It hilarious on a gaming board here men defining what is manly when adult men who play video games are considered normal male standards to be childish and not real adults cause they still play nerdy children's games. :)

Other programs and forms of entertainment.

So they are using other programs and forms of entertainment to hide from other programs and forms of entertainment?

Your stupid terrible arguments have officially spiraled back onto themselves.

You are just overly emotional and can't think man

I find it funny that someone is arguing about "it won't be watched when it's all male!" when pretty much every character who is important in the male spectrum of (80's) cartoons were all males.

this is similar to comparing Mario and Halo
Mario is bright, whimsical and inconsequential
but it is well made, and its not cool enough for teens to play
It's more like comparing Imagine: Fashion Designer Babies for the DS and Halo (not regarding the quality, or lack thereof, just the content). These are video games though which you actually derive challenge from. Not just shit you watch for the entertainment value so it's not the same.

Why do people have to see something inherently wrong with watching it?
To be clear, I don't see anything wrong with someone else watching it. The OP was asking why there was polarizing opinions on the show... the reason is simply because there's a stigma associated with the MLP franchise, that it is only for little girls. That's the answer to the question... plain and simple.

You are simply an incredibly shallow person and should feel bad.

I hope your eyes aren't too swollen from crying at all the injustice in the World.

*shakes fist*

Leave this poor boy alone World. Do you hear me?!

Most of the people (including me) who watch MLP watched and loved those shows that you mentioned going up. If the quality of the new MLP was of the same quality as it was before this generation, then I can see having the visceral reaction to males liking the show.

The team who works on the show have a great track record, working on shows that most, if not all of Gaf would consider great. (Samurai Jack, Dexter's Lab)

Thanks for the post. As much as I love stuff like Regular Show on CN I just can't see my myself watching a MLP show by msyelf. Perhaps if I was looking after my niece then maybe.

However the above posters points I can understand.

You know a show that's very underrated?

The Amazing World of Gumball.

This is probably my favorite show to watch. I'm not even sure who the target audience but I get such a good laugh from the show. More people need to know about Gumball.

I think you missed the point
massively
and if you dont care, why do you keep coming back?

And that's one of the key factors as to why the new show is popular. It was the gem on the sea of shit. Really, if MLP is a decent series, this really wouldn't be much that popular. Yeah sure the minds behind MLPFiM are veteran cartoon creators/producers, but since when does the typical internet goer care about it unless noted? Similarly, if Transformers wasn't a hit and Beast Wars popped up, you'd see stuff like "how can a 30-min commercial be this good?!"

See also: GAF turning a Power Rangers RPM OT into a shitfest because of nostalgia-gaf ruining it. RPM >>>>>>>>> ahead of MMPR, both in quality and content, but of course the eyes of the past have already established something. It's hard to shake something as solid as that.

The fuck are you talking about? Never watching MLP? You watched the whole goddamn series with us and crowned yourself the fucking King of Ponies.

It's called playing off your posts and just re-arranging your quotes or lines to make it look like I did.

I'm the champ, but not of ponies

You're not the champ, you're the king, of ponies.

The speed at which this thread filled up, damn.

I'm kind of the reverse of the OP in the sense that I'm not interested in the show, but I don't hate it or anything.

I don't get it. Am I supposed to be disturbed or disgusted by these people or something? This looks like every nerdy convention meeting. If you take out the pony signs and the dude wearing a pony tshirt you wouldn't even know they are pony fans.

It's true. He's number #1 until management goes with another angle. Still awaiting his inevitable face turn too!

Aren't even teens prone on doing similar things? The dudebros will line up and do similar things with their favorite "hardcore" game opening/cons while the dudettes will line up on the next vampire book.

Pretty much.

That's what people at gaming conventions look like. For the sake of consistency I hope that every one of you disgusted by those pictures leave NeoGAF immediately.

I had this argument a few months ago.

Some fans were open, honest, and inviting (telling me about the show, answering my questions, etc) while others were hostile, insulting, and defensive.

There are three types of fans:

1) People who genuinely love the show and have an affinity for it.
2) People who like being apart of the socially polarizing community that surrounds it, but won't admit that violating social norms has ANYTHING to do with their involvement in it.
3) People who admit that there is a 'guilty pleasure' to the whole phenomena while enjoying it for what it is.

Question is: Honestly speaking, what percentages of the fans of the show belong to category 1,2, and 3?

HMM?

That's worse.

I take it you have the same problem with all the gaming/comics/movies conventions?

I do. Well I don't actually have a real 'problem' with it... I mean 'live and let live'. But I do think: What.the.fuck?! when I see a grown up man in a Jar-Jar outfit or some nerd in a Final Fantasy costume.
