The polarizing reactions to My Little Pony

Except that the fandom DOES know that.

In fact, there's this image macro of "what non-watchers see, what watchers see".

The whole popularity of MLP stems primarily from the fact that finally, something not shit from a series that is generally shit.

With that said, yeah the view is pretty biased. TMNT 80's is inane compared to the comics and the 2003 version, Transformers that is not Animated or Beast Wars is shit, and He-Man is one of the prime examples of lazy animation.
It's not the shit animation of the 80s cartoon, it's just that the 80s cartoon was very clearly aimed toward little girls - just like the toy line was. I don't even think the old cartoon was suppose to be funny, it was like Care Bears. People that grew up back then, especially guys with sisters like myself, have a hard time grasping the concept of a My Little Pony cartoon that's actually fun to watch... particularly as a male.

You have to understand... when I was 8 years old, like most little boys with siblings, I would laugh and make fun of My Little Pony with my friends. I'd poke fun at my sister and make silly gross out faces and leave the room when that shit was forced on our TV so she could watch it. God forbid you caught one of your buddies watching a girl show, you know... cooties and all that jazz. At this age I'd actually be open to accepting something like that but, really, I'm just not interested enough to warrant somehow obtaining copies of the show to watch.

the real question here is
why do you care so much?
it doesn't actually effect you, so the only reason i can assume is that you have demons of your own that make you put other peoples interests down
Just kidding about the crying part. I really don't care too much at all, just enough to say, jokingly, I'm going to laugh in 5 years when this happens with some other little girl property. Sorry if that offended you

Well the Thundercats aren't a bunch of 6 year old kids.

MLP's tend to act like six year old kids.

So it's hard not to view fans as being those who are attracted to six year old kids.

In a nutshell it's not as disturbing.

I wouldn't let an adult that watches this show anywhere near my kids.
Yeah, I'm sure the real reason Spongebob took off is because millions of people find sea sponges to be sexy.

But the mane cast of MLP tends to act like young adults. Jobs, responsibilities, etc. There are a few young characters, but they're not part of the mane cast.

It doesn't matter, the show was designed to appeal to a child's mind. Which clearly is the appealing part for most people.

This is why I like you doc

But that has nothing to do with your comments about Thundercats characters acting more "grown up".

Also, pretty much all cartoons are made with a primary target of young children, but that does not mean they can't make it enjoyable to a wider audience (see Pixar).

Do you refuse to watch any Disney movie featuring a princess because it's too girly? It would be a shame to miss out on great movies like The Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beat just because you were too shallow to see passed the title.

Actually, avoiding The Little Mermaid is a good idea. Poor people who couldn't watch Beauty and the Beast though.

Anyway, I think this is appropriate, because in the end, this is how things are dealt with at the long run.

Not wanting to end the discussion though, so don't mod me :P

I think every fan already knows that it is catered for young girls. I think everyone knows that pretty much. You wouldn't know of course, but they pretty much loathe all of the old incarnations.

Was I talking about Spongebob?
Let's not run away from the facts here. People watch cartoons because they want to have sex with the main characters. That's what cartoons are for.

The primary target is generally wider than Young Children, especially Pixar.
Its more like anyone that likes animation, though my little pony is definitely aimed at a younger crowd.

Anyway, to get on the main topic of the polarization, I think it's very much so the fact that it's been spammed here in random threads often. Also there is a 'in or out' mentality among fans, you're either a fan or you're not a fan and therefore on some level don't belong.

I'd point to some more recent examples from the OT in Community where someone was citing members of Pony-GAF for doing a 'good job holding down' in this thread. Paraphrasing.

they definitely band together and look at these threads as some kind of war. which makes it way too tempting to troll.

that's right, the "she was asking for it" argument.

We're talking about My little pony here.

The average male child would be ashamed to watch it.

In fact more male adults watch it than male children, since I don't hear them talking about it. (I work in a day care centre)

That should tell you something.

Pony fans posting in a pony thread. How dare they

That some of us have gone beyond the maturity level of an 8 year old boy and are not sexually insecure.

Why do people have to see something inherently wrong with watching it?

I'm not a fan of the show, but why the hell should it matter to me that there is a group of people out there who like it?

It doesn't even matter if people want to hate on the fans, it's not going to change their minds on the show. If anything it will make them support it even more.

That seems like a shame, although my little pony might seem hypnotizing at moments, I can't believe it's the other way around, kids hate it, adults love it. That's just crazy.

this is similar to comparing Mario and Halo
Mario is bright, whimsical and inconsequential
but it is well made, and its not cool enough for teens to play

I love how almost all of these are palette swaps.

People can watch what they want.

The issue here is that some people seem to feel the need to let people KNOW that they watch it, as often as they can.

Little girls don't do that so, why do the male adults?

That's what you need to be asking yourself.

The Incarnation said:
If that was the case you wouldn't need to defend your fetish.

Ah, the old damned if you do, damned if you don't argument technique. Also, way to throw the word fetish in there in order to associate it with something sexual.

Well THIS thread has finally doubled back on itself and become an official carnival of stupid.

See you all the next time a thread like this is made!

No it isn't.

These are games that people play, that are a challenge.

Stop hiding behind other programs and forms of entertainment.

Because male adults are not little girls.

Seriously, your logic is just impeccable!

Hussie loves money, but I am greedy. So I'm willing to let quality slip so I can spend my money on ponies.

quit paying attention to these people

they are just like furries who constantly try to get your attention so they can feed off of it

just ignore them and they'll go away to their own little self contained hole in community

this thread is a trap

I doubt male adults would like the program so much if it was 1, A bunch of male ponies, or 2 a bunch of gay ponies.

It doesn't take a genius to work out that gender is a part of the attraction to the show.
