The polarizing reactions to My Little Pony

My beef with the Bronies is that they feel the need to insert their cutesy animated gifs into every goddamn thread. Keep it to your own thread! Stop shitting up other threads with your animated gifs.

For reference, as a pony fan I totally admit how awesome Adventure Time is.

I just wish we could all get along and not trash each other's fandoms no matter how inane or silly we may find them. Barring that, I will continue to laugh at how angry people get that I enjoy a show about little ponies.

The show makes me smile when I'm feeling down. I don't need anything more than that. It's not classic Simpsons, Adventure Time Season 1, The Boondocks, or Avatar, but it's (in my opinion, of course) the best animated show out there today. I don't see what the issue is.

Granted, many people have been more upset at me for far more petty things. I've learned to deal with it. ;)

Why is this one of the most polarizing shows of all time?

because some of us are grown men and at face value it's a show patently for small girls. Much like the product.

The growing rise of the manchild beyond the boundaries of some stupid cartoon is also irritating. Also the need to brag about it and put ponies everywhere is beyond stupid. I also suspect most bronies are furries, which I also don't like.

wake up as a colt/filly? casuals.

So let's say that an evil wizard transformed you into a male pony and teleported you to Ponyland. You wait a year or two, and there's no sign that you're ever going to change back. You start to get used to pony culture. Eventually you think about settling down and raising a family in this world that's become your new home. You aren't getting any younger, and your two foot horse-johnson needs a place to rest at night.

Which pony?

why do I have a feeling that someone tried asking a similar question like this before, in a thread like this earlier?

The look of the show is "girly".
Some people feel threatened by anything "girly".

Though I gotta admit, the gif-posting is almost Killzone-GAF levels of overboard.

... You have a point there.
That exact same question, phrased exactly the same, was asked by one of the 'pony haters' in another 'pony hate' thread.

He's asked it before. It's part of his schtick.

That might have happened.

Anyway, it's cool, this is all hypothetical.

Which pony?

Why don't you take this and start a new thread with it? I'll be on over to tell you my awesome pick.

It's not a reaction to the show. It's to the sad, sad, men who watch it and are so impressed with themselves the tell everyone how cool it is to be a man and watch the show. "Look at me, I'm in my late 20's and watch a show created for young girls! Aren't I transgressive and breaking boundaries!"

Great, you like a kids show. I've liked several but I never felt the need to make it part of my identity. It's such a hollow gesture. Like a 40 year old who thinks by extolling Justin Beiber as a modern crooner makes him young.

Maybe you can compare it to guys who feel the need to paint sports logos on their body and remind everyone long past they care how well their team is doing. But Christ, they don't do it for a TV series that's going to only last 6 years.

OMG 6 seasons of pony? That would only be so amazing.

Just a heads up, some of us watch it because we find it genuinely entertaining and uplifting, the thoughts of others be damned. Please don't paint us all with the same brush. :)

It'd be amazing, wouldn't it? I can only hope it lasts that long.

"i get to be a part of a counter culture for six whole years?!"

but really, keep on doing what you all do. just realize it's kinda weird to the average person on the internet.

I'm not willing to go to the bronies = furries card, but I think age is a big part of it. Those of us who grew up during the Reagan administration remember the original MLP -- they were roughly the female equivalent to G.I. Joe (of the cartoon and comic book, not the 'kung-fu grip' era Joe). From that environment....looking at adolescent boys excitement over something we had zero interest in from an even younger age...it's weird.

There seems to be almost a generational gap when it comes to traditional gender roles. (See the Miller Lite "Man Up" ad campaign for another example of this, or discussions on how Hollywood is importing nearly all of it's leading men from places like Australia for lack of alpha males.) These are the same adolescents who have had tolerance force-fed to them for as long as they've been in school, surprised to see that people outside their age group are willing to speak their mind.

Of course, I have a 'Community' Avatar, so I guess I can only say that if I'm going to fantasize about any large-eyed character I see on TV....it'll look less like Fluttershy and more like Alison Brie.

I don't think anyone thinks "Oh man, look at how edgy I am by watching this." If they are, then it's sad.

People generally like it because it's a well produced, well written show.

you're thinking too hard about this

Can't this show just be a great cartoon?
Had me until here. Why can't it just be a mediocre show? People can enjoy it. That doesn't bother me. It's not a great show, though. It's pretty bad. I sat through because it was recommended, but it's not very good. I have no reservations about watching stuff that's meant for little girls or kids in general.

The "polarizing" effect is due to some (not all, I'd say the minority) of the fans of the show more than the show itself.

Projecting something, are we?

well, we're thinking too hard about this because the only exposure to it has been image posts on a forum where no one can make an identity for themselves without becoming a member of a sect or subculture, and all of those posts are borderline creepy or polarizing to people who haven't seen the show.

thus is GAF, i guess? i'm never going to watch the show, but the thing that strikes me about it is the fans' necessity to make their fandom known. which, i admit, might be due to the nature of the forum in the first place.

only the outliers get attention.

It seems to me that people take more notice and generally make a bigger deal out of those using MLP avatars and gifs than of any other gaf subculture.

It's happened before with killzone, mgs4, anime, and community avatars/gifs etc.

Before the ponies it was AnimeGAF that received hate.

Don't do it! It makes you into someone who wants to have sex with cartoon horses apparently!
