The polarizing reactions to My Little Pony

I've watched the whole series at the request of a friend, and I found it pretty good. Well-written, entertaining, funny...regardless of the demographic it's geared towards, it turned out to be a good show.

Mind you, I wouldn't consider myself a brony; I'm nowhere near that obsessed with it.

Fixed.

CreepyGAF > you.

I thought this was all an elaborate joke, cobbled up by posters on some other message board and then adopted by gaming age.

I wonder how much of this My Little Pony Love is real and how much is people riding the meme bandwagon.

I've only seen one episode of the show and deemed it crap almost instantly, so I know nothing about it really. But...

I have no problem with the show. It's the fans.
Portal is one of my favorite games, but it also easily has some of the worst fans in terms of pure annoyance alone. It's best for most people to just not let it get to them. So when I say that MLP at the very least some awful (some at nearly ungodly proportions) fans, that's not entirely representative of what I think of the show itself.

Personally I think MLP in terms of animation is very nice and I'm a fan of Faust but it's just 'not my thing'. As someone else said near the beginning of this thread, Fosters and PPG were far more memorable and well-crafted.

I also think it's worth pointing out I watched most of Fosters ages after it was finished and still loved it; in other words, it wasn't something I grew up with. On the other hand, I'm not really sure MLP:FIM is going to have anywhere near that same kind of nostalgic pull in as short as a few years. What I watched didn't seem radically different to your typical CN/Nick/Disney show from the past ten years and the reasons friends who're into it give me for why they think it's so amazing are things like 'oh, it references a ton of stuff you wouldn't expect!' or 'it's self-aware!' and the like which never seems to be that great a basis to judge a show, especially when those phrases could be used to describe Family Guy just as much (kinda reminds me of Phineas and Ferb which I find pretty overrated).

It just seems to speak to me more about said person's lack of exposure to other recent shows like Adventure Time or even more adult-fare like Venture Bros, which will probably manage to stand the test of time because they don't rely on people online being impressed by stuff like 'oh hey, that pony show just referenced that retarded slow-mo Mary-Kate & Ashley pizza video!'.

Others are

Lucky Star
Naruto
K on (whatever that is)
and One Piece

Also yeah you "bronies" think you cancome back to the OT as the best faction on Gaf? Forget it! You haven't a ghost of a chance against creepy Gaf!
The fuck are you talking about? Never watching MLP? You watched the whole goddamn series with us and crowned yourself the fucking King of Ponies.

I'd also like to know what the fuck is going on here; because if every show is like this then I have to re-adjust my assessment of MLP.

I don't mind the show, it seems ok for a cartoon for kids, it's the super fans that bother me with their weird stuff like drawing their own shitty comics with their own shitty ponies or trying to be "cool" with their brohoofs and other non-funny image macros. Can't they simply enjoy the episodes, comment about them and wait for the next one?

I mean, i looove Fringe, but I don't make my own shitty Fringe comics of me helping Walter Bishop examine a corpse with 2 fused bodies while trying to flirt with Asteroid at the same time.

Why do Pony fans do it? Because its a cartoon?

In several (one?) episode a pony (I believe the fans dubbed her Lyra?) is seen sitting on a bench as humans would, which is of course impossible for a horse to do.

This comic is a take on that by having her human counterpart sit on the bench as a pony would.

Can't ponyfans like those shows as well? In fact, since all those shows are roughly similar relative to all tv, aren't they MORE likely to like them than the average person? Is this secretly a 3DS vs Vita troll thread?

This is a weird example because I'm 99.9999999999% sure MLP hasn't done that, but oddly enough both Adventure Time and Venture Brothers are far more referential to pop culture.

(if you take pop culture to mean a Kate Beaton horse or natzilla's amazing genderswap art, in the case of Adventure Time)

The love for the show is real, and it vastly outnumbers those who are only in it for the memes, but there's overlap. People who like the show are behind the majority of the memes.

Lyra and Bonbon are considered in the fan-canon to be a lesbian couple. Lyra was once animated sitting on a bench the way that a human sits, not the way a pony sits. The fan-canon took that and decided that Lyra does a number of "human" things that Bonbon finds embarrassing.

A segment of the fandom has taken to drawing "human ponies". Someone decided that her human counterpart should alternately have embarrassing pony traits, and should sit like a pony.

quit paying attention to these people

they are just like furries who constantly try to get your attention so they can feed off of it

just ignore them and they'll go away to their own little self contained hole in community

this thread is a trap

You're so cute.

Ty Beanie Babies, Furbies, Pokemon, Care Bears, Tamagotchi, Teletubbies, PowerPuff Girls, My Little Pony, etc. There will always be another "irritatingly cute" phenomenon that's cool to love/hate. Such is our vapid culture.

Can't ponyfans like those shows as well? Certainly; my point was when I ask people why this show in particular stands out for them what they bring up doesn't seem particularly unique for your (competently made) western-cartoon nowadays. In fact, since all those shows are roughly similar relative to all tv, aren't they MORE likely to like them than the average person? Is this secretly a 3DS vs Vita troll thread? ... No?
besides they're both going to bomb terribly

This is a weird example because I'm 99.9999999999% sure MLP hasn't done that, but oddly enough both Adventure Time and Venture Brothers are far more referential to pop culture. My point was that both AT and VB seem to have a lot more in terms of narrative/characterisation/writing/etc. which gives them way more to stand on then MLP (IMO!) if you were to strip away all three show's referential nature (does AT even really reference anything besides kinda-sorta being like Dungeons and Dragons at times?). Despite this AT and VB don't seem to have the same level of fanaticism going on about how revolutionary their show is, though lord knows nearly any fanbase is going to have their relentless preachers. I'll concede I maybe entirely wrong with that Gimme Pizza reference though since youtube isn't bringing up anything besides pointless slowed down youtube poops :P

(if you take pop culture to mean a Kate Beaton horse or natzilla's amazing genderswap art, in the case of Adventure Time) I take it more to just mean 'mainstream' pop-culture rather than fan stuff (didn't they establish some random extra in the background with messed up eyes as an actual character after fans ran with it? that kind of thing I normally find actually cool for what it's worth), while in Nat's case she's the character designer for Adventure Time. It'd be neat to see where/how exactly MLP referenced Kate Beaton at any rate since I quite like her comics.

EDIT: Derp, you meant that one AT episode with the 'horse' with poo brains instead of MLP with that Kate Beaton comment, didn't you? Sorry, misread it originally.

Sometimes irony curdles into a sinister sincerity.

The only way you can make that claim is if you watched it. Do you really want to admit that?
This is a fucking terrible argument, even if this particular instance was in jest since I see it done constantly. IF YOU HATE IT SO MUCH YOU MUST OF WATCHED IT, AND IF YOU'VE WATCHED IT, YOU MUST SECRETLY LOVE IT BECAUSE OTHERWISE WHY WERE YOU WATCHING IT IN THE FIRST PLACE???

That is some serious grade-school levels of debating right there.

Can I ask you a question?

In all seriousness how old are you?
... 20? Is this going to lead into some sort of witty 'why are you bothering to critique this show when you're too old to be watching cartoons in the first place' jab or something?

By no means. I'm in my early thirties and I still enjoy cartons but it's the way some people are talking about this show, frankly it's freaking me out a little.

It's just a little weird to me that a 20 yo man (I'm assuming you're a guy) is 'into' this show and even the way your write about it is strange.

Is your love of this show something vaguely sexual? Don't get me wrong I'm not questioning your sexuality (none of my business) but I honestly cannot get my head around the way grown men are talking about My Little Pony.

I thought it was more like IF YOU WATCHED IT THAT MEANS YOU WATCHED A SHOW ABOUT PONIES FOR LITTLE GIRLS HEEHEEHEE.

Besides, it's a good question.

i don't think anyone actually likes MLP, not seriously. i mean i have no problem with adults watching a show about talking ponies aimed at kids, thats fine, but there's seriously no kind of real content there that would actually appeal to adults in terms of themes, humour etc.

i think its just a troll like "hey guys mlp is actually good u shud watch it!" and people watch it and they laugh because people fell for it.

There's a humor to the show, very much like other shows Faust was involved in like Powerpuff Girls or Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends.

As for the humor, one thing the show does very well is very minimal (and subtle) pop culture jokes. Most shows just beat you over the head with each and every joke. MLP will do them occasionally, and so subtly that if you don't get the joke, you don't know you missed a joke. They did an entire episode based on an episode of the original Star Trek, and most people didn't even realize it.

seems like we are too immature to handle My Little Pony discussion on OT. Maybe the topic should be banned so that we don't fight about it anymore?

If you really think Pokémon, Tamagotchi and The Powerpuff Girls are in the same tier as the others, then you have real issues.

... I've been arguing for the past couple posts why I don't think it's a particularly great show. I think you're confusing parts of the post I was responding with (my responses were bolded) with my own, but even then I don't see what the guy I was talking to said even remotely suggested he/she had a sexual attraction to the show.

Not to mention that whole whole 'poo brain' thing is word for word from the Adventure Time episode I was talking about.

This is the most bizarre case of someone horribly misinterpreting a post I've ever seen. :I

Not really; how else is the guy going to be able to make a (fair) judgement on something? While I don't doubt there's a few people who hate the whole MLP explosion who can't be arsed to watch an episode before saying it's shit, most people who aren't fans and dispute whether it's even that good still bothered to actually watch a bit of of it so they'd have some idea of what they were talking about.

WTF?

I was going to look into this using a book I was recommended for studying audience response, a collection of essays on fandom, but I haven't had the time. So instead of saying anything enlightening (though basically I think that most people outside of the show's target demographic are on some level acting upon the inherent level of irony associated with a grown man watching the show, whether on a subconscious or conscious level) I'll just say:

Why have you let them loose?

Denying people their subjectivity is a poor foundation for criticism or analysis. Or even contemplation.

I'm not denying anyone anything, it's just my suspicion, I'd quote the number one reason for why you should watch the show from the MLP OT but I can't be bothered to find it. It's heavily worded to assume they're talking about irony but not directly stated. I'm just interpreting what I see.

Edit: Here, I even dug it up -
The sheer rush from the absurdity and cognitive dissonance resulting from the realization that you're a full-grown adult person who is loving a show about magical ponies, geared primarily at young girls, and coming from a franchise with a 25-year history of lowest-common-denominator toy-store-shelf-filling plastic vapidness, and knowing that you are not alone in doing so.
