The polarizing reactions to My Little Pony

So, wait, one study about one particular group of people proves that stereotypes are true?
Not one study.

Not only that, but "furries" are a group of people *defined* by a sexual desire.
You'd be surprised at how many of them believe it is not sexual at all.

MLP fans are a group defined by liking a show. You really can't conceive of anyone liking this without underlying mental issues?
Accusations of mental issues arise after observing the behavior of those fans when they are not watching the show.

You are painting a very broad stroke with those accusations.
Are you a gamer?
If you are, do you get annoyed when all those media heads talk shit about the gaming industry as harmful? Don't you just wish you could openly enjoy your gaming hobby without other people pointing out some anecdotal evidence and pigeonholing you into it?
I hope you don't like FPS games, because that means you are a murderer.

Okay, several studies about ONE group of people.

No, I wouldn't. Regardless, there's an obvious difference between the two groups. With your line of thinking, it would follow that passionate fans of anything have all sorts of mental issues, when maybe they just like being entertained.

So, yes, then.

Yes. He is trolling like the rest of them.
Oh.

I haven't recently (but that's a whole other topic for me personally that has nothing to do with anything here), but otherwise I would tell you I really, really like cars/racing. I don't think I've ever posted on NeoGAF about that though.

Ever think maybe you should? I post in a couple of threads pertaining to my interests and so far only ponygaf gets bad mouthed. Otherwise I have a hood time here on gaf having good debates.

Spokker: Do you plan to reply to the fact that I felt that I wanted support for my homosexuality, a group you said yourself deserved support? I was only hurt because people I felt some kinship with this commonality which was ripped away because of the most inane bullshit.

Or will you ignore it?

I don't see why I bother. Fucking grade school mentality these people have.

*Edit*

Ah, he's just trolling like all the rest.

Out of sheer curiosity do you have any background in psychology or sociology outside of poppsych or undergraduate classes?

I only get annoyed when attempts are made to strictly regulate any media as a matter of law. Notice I am not proposing to put My Little Pony behind the counter at your local cartoon store.

But if I do speak out against those who believe that video games are harmful, there is a lot of research to back me up. On the other hand, they often make good points about those who spend too much time playing video games and not focusing on real life.

Don't you just wish you could openly enjoy your gaming hobby without other people pointing out some anecdotal evidence and pigeonholing you into it?
That thought has never crossed my mind. What has crossed my mind is how weird people who go to LAN parties are. I went to one once and people were trading more porn than frags. The guy who ran the LAN party was obsessed with Duke 3D that he was always spouting catchphrases and smelled like onions.

Nope. I did my undergraduate work in Internet Drama and in grad school I earned my Master's in Forums Posting. Wrote my thesis on balloon fetishists.

Bitch: yah, this is your home too, why not a car/racing thread? It doesn't have to replace audizone.com or anything, but I'm sure you're not alone and perhaps you too can one day learn to enjoy enjoyment.

Feep: Furries were ever only equated with sex bullshit only after the internet started being allowed to make definitions for things. And now look at the world we live in. We should have never allowed that to happen. They should have destroyed the Stile Project while it was still young. I grew up on funny animal comics, like most of us grew up on funny animal cartoons. Talking dogs and shit. Not sex. Only after 2000, did furry mean someone who dressed up in a suit to hump someone else dressed in a suit. And even then they were known as 'fursuiters' so as not to confuse them with the much older 'furry' term. Of course, along the way the internet got lazy, I guess.

It's just annoying.

These fans are similarly not trying to force Pony fandom on anyone who isn't willing to support the show. However, trying to say there is factual evidence that pony fans have a necessary sexual attraction to them is pretty ridiculous without any proof of it. A bunch of fanart from a couple likely known furries does not count. The fact is, there is no proof that BRonies or MLP fandom is any more harmful than any other hobby or fandom. If someone presents undeniable proof that it is, then I will retract my statement.

When Plante and Gerbasi are finished with the furries perhaps they'll start asking you guys some questions.
They can ask me whatever the hell they want. I like everything from tornadoes to supercars to origami to football to anime. I'm certain they'll find some kind of "disorder" to associate me with. I have also not propagated any image macros of ponies or avatrs on this forum at all. I am just a fan of the show and a brony by association. Some of us do exist you know.
Maybe you should complain that I am sporting an avatar of a cute penguin. Perhaps I mean to fuck it.

Furry fandom is oftentimes a reaction against the world and attempting to find an identity for people uncomfortable in their human skin. I don't think like they do but I certainly can understand it. This world isn't really a friendly place. People have different ways of dealing with it. Some people smoke or drink themselves to death or take drugs like meth to deal with it. Some dress up in fursuits. I would take furries any day over meth heads and alcoholics.

Oh, he's a furry doing the study. That's cool I guess. But um...Is he a good furry or a bad furry?
according to his okcupid profile, i'd peg him as a good furry. the biggest red flag was that 'enders game' was his first choice as a favourite book.

You mean here on NeoGAF? Never thought about it as most of the blogs I follow cover research part of it well enough for me. Plus the actual enjoyment isn't just talking about it or looking at pictures, it's going out there and doing it.

Well, he likes marshmallows, lego and science. No furry fucking in there, so "good furry", I guess.

Notice that I didn't call you intolerant for not liking Tyler Perry, but there are many My Little Pony fans who will go on a rant about the fanbase having a "right" to exist and then go on about intolerance and open mindedness.

There are a bajillion quotes on this very topic of MLP fans saying that they are cool with people not liking the show. It is the whole brony = furryphedophilemanchildren thing that gets annoying. It is no different from the whole "xboxlive users = stupid 13 year old fratboys", "anime fans =pedos", "videogame fans = psicotic murderers". Some people are behaving not better than Jack Thompson, and on a freaking videogame forum, no less.

As someone pointed out, it's just nerds bashing other nerds to feel better.

Even MLP fans aren't immune from it - we have people like 2th who will go on a bind furry bashing thing, for instance.

I don't get why this thread is still open.

I think it's only functional purpose is to serve as a honeypot for people to get banned in. But there doesn't seem to be enough of that happening here. So it's just gaffers insulting each other.

Not cool, guys.

This is like watching the nerds in school who never learned the basic social skills to not get bullied. If you guys really were that cool and confident in whatever you liked this thread wouldn't: a. Existed b. Gotten this big so fast. Just ignore whatever people say about you if you really are that secure. Just ignore detractors. But no its a lot easier to bond over the fact that you think everyone hates you then it is a show for 5 year old girls.

It turns out if you ignore detractors it works great until someone makes a thread innocently wondering about it and then everybody fucking bursts out of the woodwork again.

I've seen this carnival of stupidity at least four times now.

10 year old girls, thank you very much!

God, I hope I never type that statement again.

So I just completed the entirety of this series due to request from a friend who is a big fan of the show.

It was pretty good! Good animation, downright hilarious, funny characters, and good cartoon overall.

I didn't really feel motivated outside of those realms, however.

Why is this one of the most polarizing shows of all time? People seem to either love it so much that they hype background characters, create fan material, and jack off to pony characters that they usually wouldn't jack off to; or they despise it with a visceral, illogical hatred.

I don't get this, either one. Can't this show just be a great cartoon?

What exactly motivates people to either extreme spectrum? That's all the reactions I see from this.

Why does a show get this much of a reaction from both sides, when other shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender, Gargoyles, Batman: The Animated Series, etc. all are recognized as being fantastic cartoon series yet don't get a similar love and hatred?

Maybe it's because the show is for little girls I guess.

The exact reasons for the fandom and hate can't be pinned down in general terms. But I think the reasons for why the arguements have been fueled for so long can be parsed down into a few core motivations.

The internet culture has for a long time been about trolling and being trolled. MLP has created a new avenue for people to incite anger in others. What makes MLP interesting is that for most people the roles of who was trolled and who was doing the trolling has been reversed.

MLP fandom might be looked at in history as one of the bigger counter culture movements that is a counter to issues that are more relevant in cyberspace than the real world unlike more relevant movements such as blogging being counterculture to news media and grass root communities being a counter to established political structures.

Not true. I watched a couple episodes subbed. Didn't like it nearly as much and went back to my precious dubs.

Also, People's disdain for the ponies seems to be similar to their disdain for moe anime, just that it is given an American face instead of Japanese.
