The "PS3 Has No Games" stigma - Why is it still going strong?

Sounds more like he's tired of your console evangelizing bullshit, since nowhere in your little story does the guy you're texting say he's ever wanted a PS3.

Sorry, he's actually mentioned to me about thinking about getting one before but saying he wanted the price to be lower... hence, texting him when a deal came up. I've been with my girlfriend for years now and they're a tight knit family so it's not as if the guy is a fucking stranger.

you know what to do now... violence!! go over his house.. then stomp on his 360 after its been on a few hours.. then grab him and shove his face into red hot guts of the 360 and start yelling "DO YOU LIKE THIS PS3 GAME? ITS CALLED YOURE FACE! THE SEQUAL IS YOURE NUTS" then stomp on his nuts for 20 minutes or until he starts vomiting in pain..

or just.. i dunno.. invite ur cousin over and show him the games you own on youre ps3 and let him play them.. that could work as well
No need for any of that.. just wait for his 360 to rrod He'll cross over then

Keep posting the game boxes, it'll occur to normal people why the "limited game library" criticism exists as they notice how each collection is 90% alike.

It doesn't help that a number of games in those pictures have 360 versions as well.

PS3 has a great deal of good games. There are many PS3 games that are certainly worth playing. Does it really have any genre defining, game of the year quality, memorable timeless classic games? No. And when youre systems $399, thats the kinda game thats gonna make me pick the system up. But there are none of those games. Which is why i dont own a PS3.

I think the closest thing to that is Call of Duty 4, which plays better IMO on PC or 360. The best PS3 games are merely great in the overall scheme of things. Resistance is a quality shooter, but not in the upper echelons of the genre. Motorstorm is great, and would be better with more modes and tracks, which is why we look towards the sequel. Ninja Gaiden Sigma is great, but its essentially an enhanced port. Ratchets great, but its a refined more of the same. Uncharteds pretty good, but its a mish mash of lots of genres and really short. HSG is good, but its a more refined and prettier version of its predecessors. Theres nothing on the PS3 that truly stands out to me.

To be fair, I have about 7 or so PS3 games, and I think over half of them are multi-platform (COD4, DW6, DW:G, UT3) But I don't have a 360, so more of the PS3 library is appealing to me.

My 360 is THE cause of global warming....debate...

And the on topic comment - I own 28 games for my 360 and only 7 for my PS3. The reason PS3 has "no games" is not that there aren't any, its because I had my 360 first, built up my XBL friend's list there and don't feel like abandoning that to play the same games on the PS3...

Even Japanese imports ffs.

How the fuck else are you supposed to validate the purchase of a game console, by not buying games for it?

I had alot more games.. I just can't post psn titles and all the other games I traded in. Besides great minds think alike :p

Here's how it is for me...

GENERAL FEELINGS TOWARDS CERTAIN GAMES:

Majority of third party games - I just don't care about them. I might buy certain games (Assassin's Creed) for example -- but unless I hear its good, or think I'll dig the concept, I'm not buying it.

American sports games - NFL, MLB, etc etc. Not my thing.

Car / Racing games - I like Burnout, Mario Kart, Wipeout... occasionally another title here or there.

Generic FPS games - fuck no

Tactical shooters - no

NOT INTERESTED IN, OR DEEM INSIGNIFICANT:

Resistance - not a big FPS fan, played this one briefly and didn't like it

Virtua Fighter 5 - I am ass at fighting games, so very rarely buy into them, but definitely more of a Street Fighter, Tekken kinda guy

Devil May Cry 4 - I think these games are shit. Not kidding.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue - I don't like realistic car sims and i've seen the phrase expensive demo thrown around

Ridge Racer 7 - I've always thought the games were shit and crappy value ever since I bought the first one on PlayStation.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma - Ninja Gaiden on Xbox pwned me so hard I wouldn't want to embarrass myself any further by trying this one.

HMMM. MAYBE:

UT3 - meh, would probably play it, but I don't really care. Mods on consoles is cool though.

Heavenly Sword - looks fun and god-of-war-esque but it doesn't sound particularly deep or replayable.

Motorstorm - played it, didn't really like it but think the sequel could be cool.

YES. SOUND SWEET!:

Warhawk - Looks great, love that it went download / online only

Uncharted - looks and sounds awesome, got great impressions here, looking forward to playing it

Ratchet & Clank - apparently so good it drew comparisons to SMG, graphics look great. I still think of R&C and J&D along the lines of Bubsy, Crash Bandicoot and stuff like that, which is probably a disservice... but I suppose thats because I lived through the 90s mascot war bullshit.

---

There's probably stuff I'm forgetting. Clearly I don't believe the "PS3 has no games" comments people throw about, no. But then again, I'm not the kind of guy who looks at 2008 on PS3 and wets himself with excitement. Barre what already interests me (see above), I love the look of some stuff on the download service, and I think MGS4 and Little Big Planet will be truly compelling. But thats about as positive as I can be.

When people say "PS3 has no games", most are probably just fanboys. But I think its also possible they're incorrectly expressing themselves. They might mean "PS3 has no games that I am interested in" or "PS3 doesn't have enough great games yet to justify me paying for one".

Thats certainly how I feel. Consoles are expensive -- why should I buy now, when I can just wait a few months, a year, or more and enjoy it all later for cheaper? Granted, I'm a student: but I work, still live at home with the parents, and still don't have that kind of disposable income. Money goes on my social life and all sorts of other more important shit. It honestly amazes me when I see kids and young adults somehow paying for a new HD console, because I'm 24 and can't afford or justify it, frankly.

I can only answer for myself.

If you're not a big MGS, Gran Turismo, or Final Fantasy fan (and I'm not) the system's exclusive lineup seems pretty barren. I'm not dissing the quality of those games, they are going to be AAA titles.

There are definitely a few games i'm interested in (LBP, Resistance 2, God of War 3, even MGS4), but it hasn't reached the critical mass of me wanting to throw down $400 for the hardware yet. I would buy MGS 4 on day one if I already had a PS3, but i'm not going to buy a PS3 in order to play MGS 4.

So many people just assume that you're crazy if you don't want to play those 4-5 incredible games coming out for system X... it just doesn't work that way and never has.

Interesting this kind of thing seems to come up now. It's almost like viral marketing. PS3 has games, so does Xbox. Any rational person can see that. You are a fanboy if you think otherwise.

Because some gamers have similar libraries of games, this somehow makes those games a non factor? So all the 360 owners that have copies of Halo3, Gears, Mass Effect and Bioshock I guess don't realize those portions of their libraries don't really count.

I'm sure going to get one when MGS4 comes out, but as a 360 and PC owner the only PS3 exclusive games available right now that interest me are Uncharted and Everyday Shooter.

I don't even understand what he's trying to imply here. Having a lot of games = desperation?

If you already put down the money for a 360, then it can be hard to muster up the money to also invest in a PS3 if you're only interested in it for PS3 exclusives. The best course of action would be deciding to sell your current system (yourself) to put towards the system that has the exclusives you want to play since you can play Call of Duty 4, Condemned 2, GTA IV, Rock Band, etc on either system of choice.

it's still going on for the same reason it's still going on for the PSP.

if something is true for long enough, people will continue to believe it long after it's fixed.

Odrion said:

Is there something wrong with having Japanese games?
It's more of a shame that the other consoles aren't region free, so you have no choice but to buy another console.

Trash.

I own a PS3, and I have a LOT more trouble finding games for it than the other systems I own.

Same here.... nothing I want to play.. not even the exclusives.

If it weren't for the occasional Warhawk and constant MLB08, this thing would be a doorstop. For a lot of us it's a blu-ray player that sometimes can play games... even though they don't look or run as good as the 360 counterparts.

It troubles me that you can get banned here for your opinion about that though....

Because PS3 doesnt have a TON of exclusives...yet. I use mine to play upscaled PS1/PS2 games wirelessly, Blu ray movies, and the games I do own for the system are exclusive, came out first, or just control better (VF5, DMC4, Uncharted, Ratchet, Resistance). 2008 will definatly kick things off for the system though.

Personally, I think there are a few games that are interesting but not enough "must haves", and concerning the multiplatform games I'd rather buy the X360-versions.

It might very well change for me once MGS4 is released, though.

I'm not sure about "enigmas," but I do think PlayStation 3 is about as bad as GameCube when it comes to interesting games. If GameCube was a "Nintendo fan's system," then PlayStation 3 is a "media junky's system." The point is that both are way too focused on segments to really be a mainstream hit.

There are definitely a few games i'm interested in (Gears of War 2... ???), but it hasn't reached the critical mass of me wanting to throw down $350+ $99 wifi + $50/year to play online + $200 hd-dvd no hd option for the hardware yet. I would buy Gears of War 2 on day one if I already had a 360, but i'm not going to buy a 360 in order to play Gears of War 2.
see.. it works both ways :/

But people have a lot more variety with their 360 collections. Some people don't even have Mass Effect, Gears, Halo 3, or Bioshock because they have enough of a choice in titles.

With PS3 collections you can predict they have Resistance, Motorstorm, Ratchet, etc. The only things that are kinda different is when they start getting desperate and purchase shitty games like Folklore and Heavenly Sword.

I'll be getting one before Killzone 2 comes out, but as of right now the only games that interest me on PS3 are Warhawk and Ratchet. That is not enough for me to justify spending $400+ on a console

So what do you want to play then?

When people say "there's nothing I want to play", that's fine. But what are you playing? What did you like to play before?

If the answer is Gears of War or Halo 3, then 360 is for you, Mass Effect counts too, but that's on the PC soon. Lost Odessy is also a great exclusive.

If the answer is any Nintendo published game, then the Wii is for you.

Anything else and the PS3 has it covered, or will have it covered this year. People who say "there's nothing I want to play" just sound like they only want to play Halo or something. Nothing wrong with that, but that just means your not the target audience of the product.

"Some people don't have Halo 3"...

I think the ratio of PS3 owners who have Resistance and the 360 owners who have Halo 3 would be pretty damn similar.

Okay, going off people that have posted their PS3 collections (note: does not include PSN titles, because none have been posted):

As I can't read Japanese, I'll assume the two import titles are exclusive to the PS3: 10 out of the 16 games you showed are PS3 exclusives. (I didn't count Ninja Gaiden, because it is a remake/port/thing, but if you want to, add another.)

6 out of 12 games are PS3 exclusives. (see above for rationale)

While those exclusive-to-multiplatform ratios are pretty good, most of you need to realize the "PS3 has no games" meme/mentality doesn't literally mean "no games." The person in the OP already has a 360, he isn't going to rebuy the games he already has just to flesh out his collection. And, I know this might be hard to conceptualize, but maybe he just isn't interested in what else there is on the PS3?

I just wonder where you people are when the Wii's library gets called out for "not having games" either.

Exactly. Wayward missed: Naruto Rise of a Ninja, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Lost Planet (it came out on the 360 first...so most people who do own a 360 and were intrested in the game probably have it on that), Dead Rising, Dead or Alive 4, PGR3/PGR4, Eternal Sonata, the upcoming SRPG's (this summer) from Atlus, and more.

Once developers start making more really nice exclusives for the PS3 or at least timed exclusives...then maybe the whole "no games" thing will disappear.

Aren't 6 of them exclusives? Though one day I understand UT3 will probably drop on 360... (is this confirmed?) in probably a gimped no-mod version.

Virtually every single multi-platform release has been better on the 360 (often by some margin) with the only real exceptions being games that were delayed quite a bit for the PS3 release.

If you own a 360 and a PS3, generally you'll think of these as "360 games" because they're not worth buying on the PS3 unless you only have a PS3.

The only games I buy for my PS3 are exclusives, and there are hardly any for the system at this point that are of interest to me.

remove the multi-platform games. then there's the fact that I personally don't like racing or multiplayer-orientated games or Ratchet and Clank. that leaves Uncharted, Ninja Gaiden, Heavenly Sword and Resistance. all great games I would love to own but it's not worth getting another console. I can go without, especially as there so many other non-exclusive games to take my mind off it.

Yes.. because when you get your ps3 your gonna buy all your games in one felt swoop. Noooo you cant have 3-4 games now and buy the rest later. You want to plop down 1200 on the spot and get 20 games right now.

PS3 haz no games? It's a completely 360 centric answer. If you're upgrading from a PS2 or Xbox to the PS3, there are lots of games coming out at the moment, both multiplatform and exclusives (in bold).

The past month the following games were released in the US, Europe and/or Japan:

# Dark Sector
# Gran Turismo 5: Prologue
# Everybody's Golf: World Tour
# Viking: Battle for Asgard
# Condemned 2: Bloodshot
# Karaoke Revolution: American Idol Encore
# Rainbow Six: Vegas 2
# Sega Superstar Tennis
# Pro Evolution Soccer 2008
# Turning Point: Fall of Liberty
# Winning Post 7 Maximum 2008
# Major League Baseball 2K8
# Army of Two
# MLB 08: The Show
# MX vs ATV: Untamed
# Dynasty Warriors 6
# Blacksite Area 51
# Soldier of Fortune: Payback (Review)
# Battle for the Pacific (History Channel)
# Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan (Yakuza 3)

What do you mean: there are no games?

Of course I will be buying GTA4 on PS3. A game of that magnitude is bound to have alot of "disc read errors" on the 360. Seriously I got sick of those when at some huge climactic scene in Mass Effect or Lost Odyssey. Even happened once during Assassins Creed.

2008 will be the better year for the PS3 in terms of experiences that will possibly be better than the 360 version (even by a small margin) or that you cant find anywhere else. Thats all there is to it.

UT3 was released on Windows, too. It could technically be considered "console exclusive, for now" So, bump it up to 5 out of 9, if you'd like. Let's not even get into "superior version exists for rival console, other version no longer counts!" stuff, either.

Hmm?

I've never had "disc read error". Well, I did once or something, right before I got RROD. I'm probably gonna buy a PS3 when MGS4 arrives, but GTAIV is something I'll definitely pick up for the X360.

Well I dunno if its disc read error. Its that message that pops up claiming the disc is dirty, and boots you back to the dashboard.
