The "PS3 Has No Games" stigma - Why is it still going strong?

Every PS3 exclusive has to justify $599 US Dollars.

Are you saying that those 9 games are worth 5,400 and that he is getting an amazing value? What should he do with the $4280 he saved by buying exclusives? Charity?

Just like every system, the PS3 has more exclusive games I am interested in than I have time to play. It's just the life of a multi-system owner: never having to settle for second best.

it should be free. i can't even send a friend a message while i'm in a game.

That makes no sense. It provides excellent lag free gaming. Messaging is gravy, and it coming fairly soon.

Point stands firm.

Don't be a moron. The PS3 certainly has justified itself in my household. I browse the internet, stream music, watch movies, and play games. Region free means I can freely import games that aren't out here yet (Yakuza 3), and the build quality means I don't worry about when it's going to die.

Every exclusive PS3 game is just icing on the cake. It's a great system worth your time. If you have a 360 already, it's a hard sell, but I'd imagine that if people's 360s keep breaking, they'll eventually sell off their collections. I can't imagine the hassle of replacing a console 2+ times.

Christ people, with the overtime Crushed put in this week, everyone's sarc detector should be at full charge.

Hint: When Mammothtank says "Every PS3 exclusive has to justify $599 US Dollars." it's not the PS3 or the PS3's library that he's denigrating.

Depends who you ask, I guess. If there's nothing on there you want to play(or you can get and want to play elsewhere) then it has no games. But if there's some exclusive stuff you want to play on there, then it does.

See Gaf, It's all a matter of perception.

why is it that people insist the wii is not capable of decent online gaming?

because people are stupid (and mostly trollish fanboys)

Uuuh...Smash online with people in a different country is fucking atrocious (by fighting game standards).

Sorry, buggy code != PSN. Anyone can release a game before it's done on any platform. Mass Effect, Two Worlds, Bully, Team Fortress 2, etc. say "hi". BTW how are those Achievement bugs on RSV:2 working out for you?

It's because the amount of games a console has is a relative thing.

The ps3 has a lot of good games now, it's just the 360 has more.

Because its truuuuuuuuuuuuuuue.
You know we could say this for every console. Everyone has different taste. Next gen-wise I have a PS3, Wii, I own 3 Wii and 10 PS3 games. If I had an Xbox (And I am always interested in having one) I would have the niche RPG's. If I can get one this year for Alan Wake then I will be happy.

As for this stigma, it really is only with the hardcore here. The consumer really isn't aware of this. All they do when game shopping is look at the shelves and see which games cater to their taste. If one doesn't like a consoles offering then they move on to the next one. That isn't to say that minds don't change. Sometimes it takes just 1 piece of software.

If we have the frame of mind to invest in a platform then we rightfully must have some degree of interest in it. I know I'm teetering in and out of the subject but this is an issue with more depth than meets the eye.

FYI, the severs have been fixed as of 2-3 days ago. The game is running great now.

Hard to argue against this. Yet people get reamed for stating such things. You compare software at each respective consoles lifetime and you'd see a fairly balanced act between Xbox and PS3. As for Wii, I am between a rock and a hard place here. I like a select few games but they are far and few in between. I like the niche RPG's like ToS but this is like the GC for me. I only bought 2 games at full price, every year. I hope this situation improves. I do love the VC. S&P has been a neat game to try for the first time.

*looks at PS3 collection, notices he is playing a PS2 game on his PS3*
Why, I'd wager it's because it has no fucking games!

Missed this the first time around...

I've owned a 360 since launch, and got a PS3 for xmas. There's very little reason to own both. I think the 'the ps3 has no games' in this case is making multi-platform titles a wash since he can already play them.

Most multiplatform stuff has had better performance on the 360. Those that have broken even, in cases like his, get purchased on the 360 because he's established a friends list on there for multiplayer, or has gotten bitten by the achievement/gamerscore bug.

I've played a lot on PS3 since I've picked it up, but it's because I've made an effort to. I picked up Assassin's Creed on the PS3 because I wanted a game to play on it and was rewarded with terrible screen tearing. I traded CoD4 360 for the PS3 version and dealt with having no friends playing it. I bought Burnout on PS3 because it had marginally better performance on the PS3, and got the same friends situation... in fact, I still haven't played online because of it.

There are decent 1st party, but not what I'd consider enough for a 360 owner to justify the purchase. Ratchet and Uncharted were fantastic. Resistance was ok, but a 360 owner isn't in dire need of another shooter. Same goes for Warhawk. Lair and Heavenly Sword get lauded by people here that want to justify the purchase, but because they got panned by the gaming press, you aren't going to take a $400 chance, really.

The 'omg, then what am I playing' thing is dumb... I've seen it in threads for the PS3 and the Wii, and it's a difference of perspective. It's a fanboy response to a fanboy argument. You bought everything that got over a 7.0 on metacritic? Awesome, we're all impressed.

Heavenly Sword is supposed to be ok, but good, Lair well, I won't comment on Lair.

Anyways, your post is right on, I have a couple of friends that own a 360 and bought a PS3 (for Blu Ray) and they always ask me what games there are for it because there are no games blah blah blah, one of them was actually surprised when I told them Call of Duty 4.

This is gonna be a MAJOR problem for Sony in America, people will prefer buying games on their 360s because all their friends are on it, people won't want to buy PS3s because they can play all those games on their 360s. MGS4, FFXIII and GT5 (not prologue) are the only games that I see might make some people buy PS3s and see that PS3s does have its good share of (exclusive) games.

You post on GAF don't you?

Go to the PSN thread and add some damn people. Even if they're not real life friends, which most people's friend lists aren't - finding people to play with is always easy. There's a biggggggg PS3 online community here on GAF alone

so your definition of worth owning is a game that can blow your socks off? good or great games aren't worth owning? a game falls into 2 categories, excellent and not worth owning?

Yep . Because if you can think of 30 good or great games on any one platform right now that I should own your standards are obviously a hell of alot lower then mine when it comes to gaming or you got money to blow period. That's what renting is for.

Not me. I can't.

Your comeback...is an achievement bug:lol

Huh, I still think that PSP has no games

....that interest me. go figure.
Atleast I am tempted for that red color psp but i still dont see the value in it and i am not desperate for one.

Thank you for proving my point that it has to do with the game and not the network it's attached to. Using a blanket statement like he did that every PS3 online game has "excellent lag free gaming" is stupid at best since every one here knows it's not true.

It's certainly not because people know that GTA, MGS, GT, SOCOM and Final Fantasy are coming.
Basically this. Same shit happened with me for PS1 and PS2, and it's practically doing the same thing with PS3.

Only reason why I am getting a PS3 is frankly due to the one-two punch hits of GTA IV and MGS4. Final Fantasy as a whole doesn't interest me anymore but it'll be a decent addition to the library if I ever find the time to get around to it.

it must be the playstation brand name

Yeah it has to be just the brand name. I guess it just takes a year to kick in.

It has absolutely nothing to do with a strong lineup of exclusives, free online, reliable hardware, or innovative features (remote play for example).

People must be buying this just because it says playstation. Amazing!

Funny that a console with no games is outselling a console with sooooo many games in 08.

How can that be?

I love how when it comes to sales, Sony fanboys magically forget that it's also being sold as an inexpensive blu-ray player.

And its great how you forget that the xbox360 is being sold as an expensive dvd player

I don't know, the two PS3 exclusives games that have been "the"reason to get a PS3 have been talked about to death and neither have yet to make it to the shelf (I'm talking about MGS4 and FF13).

Your argument doesn't stand up well in the territories where HD "doesn't matter".

Inner-G said:
The DVD player part is expensive, but you can get a sweet deal on the HD-DVD dongle.

So is the wifi adapter and the proprietary hdd.

Also keep in mind that some people like only specific genres, so even if a system has enough games for gamers like us who like everything, other people may think it doesn't have enough games that they like.

Choke on the Magic said:

What the hell are you talking about? Worldwide, PS3 constitutes anywhere from 70 to 90% of overall Blu-ray player sales depending on the region. HD is still relatively a non-issue when it comes to DVD sales but even wildly estimating HD players having all of 5% of overall DVD player sales means that there are at least over 6 million HD players are out there, a bulk of them being PS3s. Who cares when there may be some "regions" where HD doesn't matter?

PS3 is both a game console and a BR player. While that's fine functionally, that also means that its target market is divided between consumers who uses it for different reasons. Yeah, everyone who bought a PS3 just adores it as a game console. *roll eyes* It's great how easily people spew out conveniently ignorant bullshit just to support their brand loyalties.

If that were true then people should just be saying "PS3 has no rpg games" (yet).
