The "PS3 Has No Games" stigma - Why is it still going strong?

Sorry guys, I went shopping for a PS3 a few weeks ago, and when I was looking for a game to get, I found nothing I wanted, so I didn't buy it.

The ps3 has no games.

Quoted for emphasis. It has become a key factor in the first quarter of this generation. *Hugs his whisper quite PS3*

What the hell are you talking about? Worldwide, PS3 constitutes anywhere from 70 to 90% of overall Blu-ray player sales depending on the region. HD is still relatively a non-issue when it comes to DVD sales but even wildly estimating HD players having all of 5% of overall DVD player sales means that there are at least over 6 million HD players are out there, a bulk of them being PS3s. Who cares when there may be some "regions" where HD doesn't matter?

PS3 is both a game console and a BR player. While that's fine functionally, that also means that its target market is divided between consumers who uses it for different reasons. Yeah, everyone who bought a PS3 just adores it as a game console. *roll eyes* It's great how easily people spew out conveniently ignorant bullshit just to support their brand loyalties.

I'm sorry, weren't you the one insinuating that Blu-ray functionality in the PS3 is a primary deciding factor among mass markets? You've either lost your mind, or have forgotten a topic you brought up yourself, less than 15 minutes ago.

There have been polls proving that in certain territories, HD media playback was a non-issue for the majority of consumers interested in purchasing a "next-gen" console. Thus, the idea that no one is interested in purchasing a PS3 to play games is fucking asinine.

Whoa sarcasm missed :)

I think the PS3 has no games stigma is there due to lack of exclusive games and that the majority of the multiplatform games are better on the 360 still.

I actually caught myself saying "there is nothing to play on the PS3" a couple of weeks back. I bought a PS3 in January and I haven't played a game on it yet. I loaded up Uncharted to see the intro but that's it. Oh I did play the demo for MLB the Show.

But really other than Uncharted and MGS, I don't see a thing this year that will get me playing my PS3.

It is a great Bluray player though. :) And I love it for that.

Anyways, your post is right on, I have a couple of friends that own a 360 and bought a PS3 (for Blu Ray) and they always ask me what games there are for it because there are no games blah blah blah, one of them was actually surprised when I told them Call of Duty 4.

PS3 "having no games" is gonna be a hard stigma to break

I am yet to come across a single person in real life who actually thinks this or has heard about this 'stigma'.

I haven't even started playing Uncharted. :lol

I did buy it with my system. If there was any game on the PS3 that deserved my support it's a Naught Dog game. And I know I'll love it but I've got over 40 games on my 360 and they are keeping me plenty busy right now.

It's tough though when the release schedule for games is so packed. I'm really looking forward to the drought this summer so I can do a bit of catching up.

And I've never been into the Hot Shots games. I would rather play Tiger than Hot Shots. But I don't doubt that it's awesome if you are into that game.

But I am that customer that stand in front of the PS3 games section at Best Buy and Blockbuster and can't see a single game that I want to play NOW. It's kinda odd.

I think it exists mostly around message boards and the hardcore. Most average people don't care and are waiting for Game X to hit anyway or price drops.

Absolutely and with some retailers dropping it's price, it's a must get game imo. AT least rent it.

Can't rent here.
And there are plenty of other games available to worry about some action game with controls that only show how tacky and Sega Saturn the PS3 really is.

PS3 has a decent amount of games now, still waiting to purchase my first one though... just being lazy and waiting for prices to drop.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic, or if it's just painfully obvious you haven't played the game. O_o

I had sent a text message to my girlfriends cousin this morning alerting him to the deal at Dell to get a 40GB PS3 with an extra DS3 and HDMI cable for $399. He owns a 360 but, I know he's a gamer and have been trying to convince him to pick up a PS3 for some of the great stuff on it now and going forward that he won't be able to always get on his 360.

I just got his reply:

"$399 is still too expensive for a system with barely any games."

I can't believe that this boogeyman from the launch times is still around. Do people still honestly believe this?

You should rename the topic to 'my friend is stupid and I like cheese'.

For quite some time, I've never understood the stigma of this either as they largely have the same catalog due to multiplatform releases. However, as I see people champion reliable hardware for the PS3, most people that I know will take their chances with questionable hardware that generally has the best version of a game in comparison to a good piece of kit with what is generally the second best version of a game. It still comes down to the games.

Unless the demo is nothing like the game at all then I've played the game. It's dogshit and would probably be the worst PS3 tacky controller usage had I not happened to play a second game that used said feature, Locoroco, and I don't think we need to talk about that waste of my goddamn $5.

:lol Back when the subject was on BD vs. HD, it's all about how the PS3's value proposition is going to encourage everyone to buy the PS3 as a BD player. Now that HD lost, it's all about how everyone is buying the PS3 to play games. Nobody said that no one is interested in buying a PS3 to play games, but that doesn't mean gaming alone would begin to explain its sales numbers. Kindly kill the victim strawman BS and stop insulting everyone's intelligence.

I thought the motion-control in Folklore was actually badass.

A dualshock 3 makes all the difference though, pulling out the souls is sooo much better w/ rumble.

My casual friends have a lot of ps3 games... and most of them are the crap multi platform games like Beowulf, Kane and Lynch, ea sports (FN3 is awesome though), and such. I'd say there are too many ps3 games for me to play now.

I haven't completed most of my ps3 games. Only HL2-ep2, and one play through of resistance and not many skill points unlocked yet. I want to do these things but I keep moving to the next game I got (sorry monsters, I'm coming back to you later also).

Right. I think this here might prove more about the state of the PS3's library than intended. :lol

I have a 360 and a Wii. I'd like a PS3 but I currently dont have the time/money to justify getting one. especially when I'm having trouble finishing all the games on the other two systems I have. Throw in VC and XBLA and its just too much for me...

Currently, the PS3 has no games that interest me personally. What I've played of Lair, Motorstorm and Heavenly Sword pissed me off. Ratchet and Clank was cool though, but it didnt leave me wanting more.
To me, it seems completely logical for anyone who is interested in a PS3 to just wait and see. I havent played a "killer app" on PS3 yet and it seems by the time one comes out I could maybe find one used at a decent price.

I think PS3 hasnt done enough to distinguish its niche in the market, and if they had its a niche that only appeals to "gamers."

I don't understand why anyone gives a shit about Sony, MS or Nintendo. Its like these companies are our famalies or something. If I have to read one more thread titled
"Why does everyone think my sister is a slut!?"
I think I'll explode.

And were did I insinuate anything other then the fact that the idea of the PS3 not having any games is asinine (and it is because it does). You can try to spin what I said anyway you want, but the truth of the matter is that PS3 does have games (and some damn good ones imo) and you don't have anything concrete to show that PS3 sales are up for the bluray player alone.

Cut the crap indeed.

I think the stigma comes from the lack of blockbuster, estabilshed Sony owned IPs and exclusives on the system. So far we have gotten Resistance, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, FolkLore, and Uncharted. These are all new IPs and while those games were enjoyed by many, these games don't have the hype factor of a Gran Turismo or Metal Gear or Final Fantasy--yes, I know that Metal Gear or FF is not owned by Sony, but they are still exclusive. And many on this board have cited those games as deal breakers in buying a PS3.

Strangely enough, I have never met anyone who said the PS3 has no good games. Not trying to start anything, but I will never understand the, "PS3 has no games mentality" when IMHO, the Wii by far has the weakest line-up of software on the market, but I will not go into that for the obvious reasons. I think the PS3 has a admirable amount of quality exclusives and alot of the GOOD third party games that are on the X360 are also on the PS3 even if they aren't quite as good sometimes. I am not saying the PS3 lineup is as strong as the X360's at this point, but considering it hasn't been out near as long, I think it's library is fairly impressive.

What you say is true, but that doesnt matter to really anyone.
Normal people don't buy systems for the RATIO of good games. They just buy them for specific games.
The Wii has a ton of shitty games, but a few "killer apps" that appeal to people who have better things to do than post here.
The PS3 lacks these "killer apps."
I'm not gonna buy a system because every game on it is good.
I'm gonna buy a system because it has games I'd actually like to buy and play. Games are expensive and I'm busy with other things. I usually only get the larger titles and cool weird little ones like Zach and Wiki.

To many people PS3 is just a machine that runs GTA, MGS and Gran Turismo.... and yes many of those PS2 owners don't even know/care that GTA will be on 360.

Give it time folks.

How can that be?

Where in the world do I even hint that it's the primary factor you walking ad for education reform?

Your original little smarmy comment (which is a completely misreading of sarcasm, to boot) was answered by me in a single sentence, but I suppose that isn't really good enough for someone who's desperately trying to put their consoles in a good light. keep pretending that you're not completely full of crap.

The only thing NMH is a good example of is how to make 10% of your game fun and 90% unbearably bad

Best use of motion controls is still Galaxy, in my opinion.

The PS3 has games, but the standout titles are -- in relation to my personal experiences with the console for the past six months -- are few and far in between.

This year, Sony has a spectacular array of games lined up for release that will quell the stigma its giant black entertainment-center is notorious for. Little Big Planet. MGS4. Killzone 2. I'm no Playstation partisan, but you would have to be utterly blind to deny the exemplary lineup of PS3-exclusive titles in '08.

And don't get me wrong either -- the same can be said about Microsoft Games Studios as they pave the way for a landmark year with titles like Banjo Kazooie 3, Alan Wake, and Ninja Gaiden 2. Even further, in a few months I will be backed with enough qualitative information to support a similar proclamation in regards to Nintendo (assuming they announce their 2008 first-party portfolio in the coming several months).
