The RAM pricing crisis has only just started, Team Group GM warns — says problem will get worse in 2026 as DRAM and NAND prices double in one month

No doubt Sony will eat some of that cost, but they were profitable with hardware so far (since 2021 for disc PS5) so I don't think they want to do that for long...
I do wonder how much they have bought for next year., With GTAVI coming out in late next year they will want to have the most consoles available.

What a damn mess this gen has been. Starting with a pandemic, went through shortages in 2020/2022 and ending with years of expensive GPU, RAM, etc...
I would love to know what kind of deals they have signed for PS6. I'm sure the have them already locked in if specs are already "final" years before release.

Crazy times, who knows maybe these guys will make a comeback ...

Until price increases next year, same story for regular PS5 (and other consoles) and PC GPUs, phones etc.

If someone wanted to upgrade console/PC (outside of just memory upgrade lol) now it's a good time, who knows how fucked up 2026 will be...

Doesn't matter if ps5 / pro does go up it still be way below the entry cost of a mid level pc which is around $2,000 right now. It's super sad for sure.

It's not true at all, this PC is around the power of PS5 Pro:

Sure, you could build it cheaper ~2 months ago but it's still not that expensive (this year).

Here's a PS5 pro for 649 bucks. 200 bucks cheaper than whatever you just posted. Also...i see 1TB of storage. PS5 Pro has 2TB. That isn't counting custom-made stuff like PSSR, etc.

You just proved his point.

A 1080p ddr4 9060 isn't a mid range pc today. 🙄

It's the level of power that the most powerful console represents. So what it is?

Great, PS5 Pro (yet) isn't affected by increased RAM prices.

FSR4 is shit ton better than PSSR so you lose this argument, and you can set whatever settings you like (performance or graphics quality) vs. being stuck with whatever developers think is the best. You can increase storage at any point in time. PC offers options that console will never have.

Also, the bolded part...you can increase storage for PS5 as well in like 3 minutes.
You said it's possible to build a PC like a PS5 Pro for the same price and that's just not true. Never was. Everyone knows PC has a lot you can customize. That was never part of the discussion.

You can build PS5 Pro like PC under 1000$ (that includes 2TB storage), not that much changed since mid 2025 outside of RAM prices. In Q4 2024 (when Pro launched) it was possible to build better PC for price like that (new 4xxx cards were still around ~MSRP). There always is some "crisis" in PC space every few months.

And as always, there is some hyperbole created by console fans like you that PC is dead and "the cheapest build is at least 3K" or something. You also probably think that this GLOBAL memory price increase won't affect PS5s and you will still be able to buy PS5 Pro for 650$ one year from now (or even six months)?

All this just to say "no, you can't build a PS5 Pro-like PC for the same price as a PS5 Pro" (we didn't even take in consideration the controller which the PS5 pro has and your build didn't have). The bolded part is just you projecting. I never mentioned any of that.

Maybe PS5 will be affected...but PCs will be even more for obvious reasons.

Swap file will be available on every device in the near future:

a-phone-on-the-ram-memory-management-screen-with-a-ram-stick-behind-the-phone.jpg

It will be effected, but pc will be far worse effected.

With pc you are gonna be hit with a double whammy, with system ram plus GPUs being effected by increases.

Yes, that's why NOW is the last time to buy anything at reasonable prices.

All this just to say "no, you can't build a PS5 Pro-like PC for the same price as a PS5 Pro" (we didn't even take in consideration the controller which the PS5 pro has and your build didn't have). The bolded part is just you projecting. I never mentioned any of that.

You can use K&M (5 dollars?) to control anything on PC, that is the default controller (same for DS for PS5). You didn't say it but I heard this argument millions of time on this forum, "2K for mid range PC" was made today by another poster.

And yeah, PC will be fucked more than consoles, that's obvious. But in general all tech that use some kind of memory will be affected.

Even if prices increase, it will never be as bad as how these prices are increasing to consumers.
Thank you. You would not believe how much some people push back against this simple truth.

It's like "Sony too" is what you scream if you are really in trouble lately.

Consoles are not necessarily making money on hardware. The hardware is subsidized. The money is made with the software.

Console makers have bulk buying power and various non-consumer level channels to acquire hardware. They do not pay nearly the static prices that we do as consumers for ram.

So why would consoles that are subsidized and also that have bulk buying power for ram and have incentive to sell consoles even at a loss, increase in price at the same rate as a PC that is built with consumer facing off the shelf products? It's irrelevant to me since I have a PS5 Pro, Switch 2, XSX, and very powerful gaming PC at the moment, but it is what it is. PC gamers are pissed about it but this will make the costs associated with building a PC go up faster and higher than the costs of purchasing a console. That's my guess anyway. I don't even give a shit but I do have a hard time watching people lie to themselves and not speaking up. "Console prices will go up as fast as PC prices due to the ram shortage" is the....frankly wild opinion these people seem to have. To me it rings more like cope than truth.

fortunate for valve they specked steam machine affordably (relatively)
I think the saving grace is that Valve didn't release a price yet, because whatever price they would have announced probably wouldn't be sustainable this time next year. The way things are looking I'm going to be shocked if it still stays in that $750 range by the time it launches.

Is he still fighting that battle?

God, he's desperate

It was never true, but he has to be trolling at this point after RAM prices just made the whole PC gaming argument just a bad joke

Millions of people are playing on PC, I guess all of them are idiots.

High component prices increased prices of consoles this gen few times already and none of that components saw such massive increases as memory is having now... Good luck with "cheap consoles" next year.

While they'll still feel the pain of higher costs, Sony and Nintendo will be able to significantly mitigate this by entering into large contracts.

As usual, consoles will be king.

Well for Microsoft ALL this sounds like music because they want us on cloud and gameass.
I wouldn't be surprised in the least if they ever decide for Directx to run only on their servers and only for games until that date, shifting (as Nvidia ceo said) next graphics to run directly by AI.

Useful reference, but it's hard to ignore that the PS5 has DDR6 RAM when RAM is the topic at hand.

True, you can always save money by going DDR4, but the RAM in the console is simply worth much more.
