The Rock is pretty much the Arnold of our generation right

This is a recent thing. Actors, sports stars, and so on are "brands". So they carefully choose crafted PR, stylists, and so on.

Yeh I guess this makes sense. Before you'd mostly just see or hear about a star like Arnold in the run up to a film of his coming out. There were exceptions of course, like Michael Jackson, where everything they did made headlines. Now the public expect to get daily insights into what's going on with our favourite celebrities and demand to know their opinions on everything.

My nine year old and I just had a debate on who was Lamer.. Will Smith or the Rock.. I picked Will Smith.

Just doing a shit ton of lame movies doesn't make Arnold..

I agree with the OP and you can’t compare movie lists really because nobody makes 80’s action anymore. If they did then Dwayne would be starring in them.

The Rundown is a really good fun movie, but comparing it to Predator? C'mon now.

Arnold just had way better material to work with in genre defining movies. Where The Rock is stuck with sequels in tired franchises and rehash crap like Jumanji.

No one remembers The Rundown! And OP put it in the OP. Great flick and it has Rock mowing down dozens of bad guys by the end. Hilarious, too. I wish they did a sequel.

Outside of that, his best role was Maui. I loved him in Moana.

Had a few B- roles in movies like Nurse Betty, Jumanji, GI Joe 2. But that’s about it.

I definitely think they are at least comparable, not sure why everyone gets so pissy about this.

Very famous and bankable buff dude that makes a ton of movies, isn't a particularly great actor, is mostly known for doing action but also does other genres from time to time.

Arnie has an infinitely better filmography and his legacy will live far longer. But I honestly think that speaks more about the current state of the movie industry than about either of these 2 guys as actors

Pfft he fucking wishes.

Maybe if he did serious sci-fi/action with violence and not just family friendly fare all the time I'd agree with you.

I'd really like to see him in some rated R stuff but that's not marketable these days.

Arnold is a gem. Ain't no star as good a star as Arnold was.

The closest thing I ever had to a childhood hero growing up was Arnold, maybe Van Damme. Arnold is one of the few stars I feel truly earned his celebrity.

And am I hearing people using Arnold's accent as a negative?? His voice made his dialogue fucking hilarious!!

Credit Arnold, his agent and luck for picking the right roles and being in the right place at the right time but I don't really view the majority of his performances as irreplaceable aside from Terminator. That's not a knock on him either, his career highs far exceed that of The Rock but those style of movies aren't often made anymore. Most of the Rock's portfolio is middling but he does have a presence about him that tends to elevate his movies. I do wish he were more picky about what he chooses to be in and as such, this really isn't a fair fight.
.

Commando,
Running man,
Predator,
Total Recall.

VS

???
You missed Terminator 2

Still in terms of actual Rock movies he has had nowhere the run of hits that Arnold had from 85 to the late 90s
Arnold was late 30s when the run of hits started...the Rock is 47 from memory so his window is fast closing

He is probrably the Arnold of this generation....but Arnold was a much better action hero

dwayne can act/sing/make men & women wet, arnold never couldnt act, still cant, and is ugly as hell, theyre not even in the same league.

Pretty much true. As for films yes arnold was in way more iconic stuff but there really is a factor of being at the right place at the right time that's not really the fault of the rock. Both have tremendous work ethic. If the rock was fortunate to have linked up with James cameron he'd have a body of work just as impressive.

Arnie is much better. And I'm not even talking about their movie history, since the Rock as a slew of garbage action movies.

The Rock seems the same in every movie. It's like he's doing WWE behind a hollywood camera. Big and loud.

Arnie can go a whole movie saying almost nothing, and his presence is much bigger.

That is right. Dwayne is one of my favourite Wrestlers ever, but there is no way around Arnold. For me there may only be Jackie Chan over Arnold, but after that...there is actually Bud Spencer, Terence Hill, Sylvester Stallone, Jean Claude Van Damme, Clint Eastwood and many, many more.

If i think about Arnold and his presence:

Come on. The Rock is the likeable good guy. Not believable as someone with killer instinct. Transplant The Rock into any of Arnies iconic roles - laughable :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Well if you want to make an indictment of this generation, then sure. =P

Though Rock did have the look and charisma to be the next Arnold but his career output doesn't measure up whatsoever. His WWF work is still the best stuff he's done.

A majority of Arnold's filmography is basically about how he's the ultimate badass.

They had to make him fight an alien and the fucking devil eventually. And he still beat them.

The Rock doesn't come close. His presence isn't in the same universe.

That's not even bringing his one liner game into the picture.

Dwayne's physique has never been as good either. Dwayne has Arnie in sheer size(talking about prime Arnold of course) but Arnold was shredded. Much better physique aesthetically.

Arnoldo wins purely by sheer amount of enjoyable hits he starred in. Most of the Rock's vehicles are shit-turd bombs that are seldom genuinely enjoyable. Yeah, you can laugh at how bad some of them are, but many of Dwayne's movies don't even rise to that level.

With that said, yesterday, I watched a 2013 hidden (Is it? I'm not sure) gem called Snitch, and the Rock is really good in it. He actually acts! I might declare that his best movie right here and now without having seen a large chunk of his movies. The same director put out a 2017 film, starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, called Shot Caller that is also rather good. Okay, that's enough of my lunatic movie corner.

Hes maybe the closest to the typical action hero of the 80's but not even in the same universe as Arnold

I don't think it's quite fair. Arnie had better movies but then better more original movies were being made in his time.

I really like Dwayne and want to see him in better movies. It's not too late yet.

He will win an Oscar one day.

Haha told my friend about it...

His Answer:

<So "the Rock" is basically a millenials dream version of "Mr. Universe" if you order him over Wish from a chinese company>

brutal xD

Nah,

Arnie is in some of the best cult classics (and just outright best) movies of all time. Other than the Fast and Furious movies, I couldnt tell you what else he was in.

I remember back in the day I thought the Rock could be a good Terminator (preferably as a villain) as long as they made him an actual threat and gave it an R rating.

But noooooooooooooooooooo it never happened.

The only R rated Rock movie I can think of is Pain & Gain and I rather enjoyed it. His best movie IMO.

This thread made me realize how few R-rated movies The Rock has done, which I think is a big reason why Arnold has had a bigger effect.

The only R-rated movies The Rock has done are:

-Doom
-Pain & Gain

All in all his filmography is definitely very family friendly, mostly being made up of kids movies and mainstream PG-13 action movies. I guess that's the brand he wants. But since he's never done anything as badass as Terminator or Predator, that gives Arnold the clear win.
