Pretend that you're an executive at Fox's animation division and want to restore respectability to the Simpson's brand. What do you do? Fire the writers and bring in hungry, cutting edge writers to the table? Do away with the slapstick comedy, celebrity guest appearances? Adopt a new demographic targeting strategy? It seems more blatantly family friendly today than it was when it debuted in 1990.
I cancel the series, pretend the last half of the series doesn't exist, and show reruns of the good seasons.

Just show golden era episode reruns. With how long this thread has been going there would be a committed fan base.

Sorry. I guess the question I was trying to pose was if this show is or was ever salvagable. Was creative bankruptcy inevitable for The Simpsons at some point, or was it a case of it falling into lousy hands? Is the criticism with objective merit, or are we all just being fickle?

I admit that I wince at the newer episodes, but that may have alot to do with having watched and enjoyed the old seasons. Maybe if I were 10 or 11 I might not be so critical of it. I'll never be able to comprehend the appeal of the Twilight series, but oddly, I find the Teletubbies freakishly entertaining in limited doses.

I think the only option would be to clear out all the creative staff from top to bottom and replace with young, hungry new talent.

But here's the rub; if you're going to go to those lengths, why not just make a new show?

Was the change in tone spontaneous, or was it incremental? Was Matt Groenig blinded by money rather than the show's legacy? Many shows bow out in order to save face. But I feel that this fall was colossal. The humor in the first 3 seasons were zippy and clever. And the lack of the over polish seen in the HD era of The Simpsons is what gave the show its unique quality. As much as people rail on the first season, I found a certain appeal in much of its imperfections. The weird overbite jaw animations, Homer's unrefined voice, and the family at each other's throats. You never see that in today's episodes. Homer strangling Bart has seemingly been wiped from the records.

I once wrote a Simpsons fan-script back when I was about 10. Looking back, the level humour wasn't far off from what The Simpsons is now.

As long as the show continues to make money for Fox, they'll want to keep it going... The big problem is routine. It's had the same showrunner for more than 10 seasons. I just don't think anyone wants the job. iirc Scully took it back in the day because nobody else would. Look back to the classic years: there was a change in show runners every 2 seasons, the show continued to feel fresh because of that. Basically, new showrunner = new show. The first Jean years were pretty good as well. If they'd get a new showrunner, I'd start watching again, regardless of who it is.
btw the strangling is definitely not gone. Of the 3 recent episodes I watched listed in the recommends, 2 of them had Homer strangling Bart. Nevertheless, I think that old gag has lost a bit of its magic...

I don't think they can bring respectability back to it as this point. It's way too far gone. (And as long as the show is profitable, I doubt Fox would want to change it.) Personally, I wish that the show would just get really weird and experimental. Like Aqua Teen Hunger Force level weird. They've got nothing to lose, so they might as well.

Exactly. A new show with new people everywhere would be the better option. The Simpsons voice actors are getting worse and worse every year.

Get the foreign language ones in.

Hell, considering that "weird and experimental" thing, get the foreign language people from a specific region in to do a full episode.

If anyone knows of any outstandingly funny foreign language Simpsons clips (or even episodes, if they're allowed to be linked here) that'd be awesome. I remember watching one scene and couldn't believe how I was able to kinda translate the scene in my head with just the memory of how it played out and the tone of the character's voices.

For some reason, whenever I see this thread title I read it in the voice of Mrs Glick.

zik6EZk.jpg

- Well sir, looks like we've got us some nice items at table Glick! Like this.... what the heck-a-roonie is this, Mrs. Glick?
- It's a Candy Dish, Ned, ninety dollars!
- Uh-huh... well I uh.. I guess you could put a lot of nice things in there!
- No! Just candy, Ned. Ninety dollars!

- I guess you could post a lot of nice things in there!
- No! Just pornography!

Where's that line from, anyway? I don't wanna google it.

Marge: Do you want your son to become Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, or a sleazy male stripper?
Homer: Can't he be both, like the late Earl Warren?
Marge: Earl Warren wasn't a stripper!
Homer: Now who's being naïve?!

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court; what great men he would join. John Marshall, Charles Evans Hughes, Warren Burger… mmm, burger.

Homer's knowledge of past Chief Justices was always hilarious to me.
Lisa: Nerds are nothing to fear, Dad. In fact, some nerds of note include popcorn magnate Orville Redenbacher, rock star David Byrne, and Supreme Court Justice David Souter.

Homer: Oh no! Not Souter!

I started rewatching Simpsons (only the classic seasons) and it's a damn shame what caricature all of the characters have become.

I miss the Homer of old :(

You know, the character was so great when he was an unknown quantity by the network execs. And then once his popularity fell onto their radar, they proceeded to run the character into the ground.

But aside from our complaints, is there a general consensus on the decline of its quality? Much as I wanted to feel otherwise, I personally didn't care for Dark Knight Rises, but all of my friends loved it. It could be the same situation with the current Simpons. Or maybe it's the Fox execs who are making the call. How are the ratings? Is its viewership good on its own, or does it rely on the popularity of Family Guy? I dropped my cable service back in 2009, so I haven't had access to it since. I basically buy TV box sets as their released on Bluray/DVD. Bob's Burgers is the best show they have going on their animation block in my opinion. It's voiced by alot of familiar comedians, so it wouldn't surprise me if the show is written by comedians as well. Very spontaneous, almost as if it's improvised. God, I hope that Fox doesn't catch on. Never saw Aqua Teen Hunger Force, but I loved The Brak Show. What if writers pitched for them to adopt a Boondocks style of edginess?

I don't think there's any way to bring back that classic Simpsons charm, it had 9 great seasons you can't expect it to continue forever. Oh and the idea of bringing in "hungry, cutting edge writers" sounds like it would lead to more of the garbage we have now. Just cancel it and play reruns all day like Seinfeld.

Homer Simpson: STEALING! How could you? Why do you think I took you to see all those "Police Academy" movies, FOR FUN? I DIDN'T HEAR ANYONE LAUGHING, DID YOU? except at that guy who made sound effects.

[Tries to do a few]

Homer Simpson: Now where was I? Oh, yeah: stay away from my booze.

I need a clip of that scene. :D

I wonder about the same thing, too. I hoped that the DVD sales chart takes a nosedive around Season 9.

This is the best GIF ever.

This has always been one of my favorite speeches.

Homer: You see, son, a woman is a lot like... err... a refrigerator. They're about six feet tall, 300 pounds... they... make ice... uhhh... oh! Actually, a woman is more like a beer. They smell good, they look good, you'd step over your own mother just to get one! [drains his beer] But you can't stop at one, you wanna drink another woman! [runs to the fridge]
[Many beers later...]
Homer: [drunkenly] So, I sez, "Yeah? If you want that money, come and find it, 'cause I don't know where it is, ya baloney. You make me wanna retch." [passes out and snores.]

In the recent Conan O'Brien roundtable, they suggested that Simpsons is very expensive and currently losing money for Fox, but that Fox feels that Seth McFarlane's mega-profitable "Animation Domination" block would fail if Simpsons wasn't there to anchor it. And that if the actors didn't agree to a pay cut in the last negotiation, Fox would've taken that chance and canned the show already.

I can't stand Seth McFarland's humor. Bob's Burgers in the only show with heart, but it's a premise with limited shelf run. Workplace comedies can only work so far. It's all going to depend on the writers. Like someone said earlier, it'd be entertaining if Fox started getting experimental with humor oriented programming akin to what is on Adult Swim. I loved The Brak Show. It was such a guilty pleasure. Bring something like The Boondocks to Fox.

Time for a serious answer apart from airing reruns from the 1990s.

I would send Al Jean packing, make Matt Selman showrunner going forward, compress the current writing team down to Selman, J. Stewart Burns, Carolyn Omine and John Frink, offer spots to Matt Warburton, the good ex-Futurama writers (DXC, Vebber, Weinstein... NOT Ken Keeler) and the good ex-Office writers (Greg Daniels, Dan Greaney). Everything else would be farmed out to freelancers (i.e. no more scripts being written by Dan Castellaneta).

I would then send this crew to a cabin retreat for a week to rewatch Seasons 1-3 and drill into their skulls that I want more of the emotional core from those episodes integrated BACK into the series framework. I would also scrap the 4-act system and revert back to 3 acts (same number of commercials, though - just let the episodes pace themselves better).

I would also designate a hard-end date to the series after working out one final extension with the VA talent and ensure the final season (whether it wound up being Season 26, 27 or 28) had a moratorium on new guest star appearances - only people with established characters would be invited back to voice them. That final season would bring in a who's who of classic era writers (i.e. Vitti, Swartzwelder, O'Brien, Jean & Reiss, etc.) to write one last episode each and I would have the last episode with a cliffhanger that would lead in to a 2nd movie that would air in theaters that summer.

Then I would push for the launch of an all-Simpsons cable network and release the entire series, 2 movies, 48 Ullman shorts, commercials, animated material for the video game, whatever else you can dig up in an ultra-deluxe BluRay set for collectors.
