Yeah, there's no way to sugarcoat that. That's an abominable rating.
Even in the HD era they've been able to count on a semi-consistent audience of 8 million or so for the season premiere thanks to the NFL audience spillover.
Still the biggest audience of any FOX show that night... but hardly anything to brag about.

I think it requires you to know about the abomination that is the Selma/Abe marriage to complete it via clues.

That final clue is evil.
The only way to know which of Lenny and Carl goes in which corner (A1 or A5) is Krusty's clue and he says "Hey Hey! One character in this column has a name beginning with C" so the reflex action is to throw Carl's name in A5... but that's incorrect. Charles Montgomery Burns also resides in column 5. So this clue is actually telling you that Lenny is in Column 5.
So evil.
