I hate how they abuse the SMITHERS IS MOST PROBABLY GAY joke in the newer episodes.
In the classic era, it was just subtle hints.
Now the joke has morphed into a gag where everyone knows Smithers is gay except for Burns.

Keeping with the Moe theme

-Now let's have a minute of silent prayer for our good friend, Homer Simpson.
-How long has it been?
-6 seconds.
-Do we have to start over?
-Hell, no.

It is from some old Tex Avery cartoons. It actually has no meaning at all aside from being a reference. Avery often used it to fill up conversations that would get interupted, and he based it on old sitcoms. Also often misattributed to The Great Gatsby.

I think it was just a joke calling attention to the fact that Bart is only speaking so Homer can interrupt him. They spoke like that in some old cartoons, but I didn't think it was a reference specifically to Tex Avery.

I'd like to watch that episode with the commentary to see if they say anything about it.

Edit:

Is Malibu Stacy still brought up in newer seasons? I hate that they are so lazy with names of things now. "Mapple" is the worst. They used to be able to come up with a unique name that still represented something specific. Krusty Burger is a good example.

The most recent episode had the "Oogle" street view car.

But that is part of the joke in the cartoons and the sitcoms that was based on. There was never a Mable there, it was just some random dialogue to be interrupted.

You call this subtle?

I'm not defending the modern gags by any means, but the old gags weren't exactly "hinting". There's literally a gag where he joyously picks up the "It's raining men" album Moe chucks out. And so much for burns not knowing:

Compared to a fisting reference I would say its subtle. Raining men is pretty subtle. Or at least done more tastefully

Ambassador Henry Mwabwetumba of the Ivory Coast writes, "What is the real deal with Mr. Burns' assistant Smithers? You know what I'm talking about." Ha ha ha, of course we do!

I forget that us from a clip show

The subtlety in terms of Smithers' sexuality in the classic episodes stems from the fact that the clues were presented in vague circumstances and/or to people who did not know how to properly interpret them. They are obvious to the audience, but the characters generally don't have reason to get it for one reason or another (e.g., age, stupidity, naiveity).

Eh, not entirely, but you're close. It's mostly just new Simpsons jokes being too basic and sincere in their delivery while "you're quite good at turning me on" is just unexpected and wacky as hell.

There's an element of wackiness that is a direct projection of a particular writer's voice in many old scenes that's missing now. Bill Oakley wrote the steamed hams scene as a totally indulgent inside joke to himself that he somehow got on the air and it ended up being a classic scene everyone loves.

You don't want to go down this path. You'll notice how people fake mock-outrage that "newer" simpsons have the audacity to portray Hitler but in "classic" simspons they were healing the wounds of WWII.

Just accept new=bad, old=good, and never have a thought more nuanced than that.

Nonsense! Dogs are idiots. Think about it, Smithers: if I came into your house and started sniffing at your crotch and slobbering all over your face, what would say?

I said I understand irony......

When I first saw it I thought that it's just too cruel of a joke. It was actually one of the jump-the-shark moments for me. I also remember that there's an episode where a football player loses a leg, and an episode where Homer's eyes crust over after a laser surgery. All of those were not funny and just kinda disgusting to me. *Shrug*
not saying you didn't understand, i just think it's interesting that the original scripted joke was the sandwich being cut, but George Meyer suggested the arm getting cut.

i agree with you in general, some of the more violent humor just squicks me out more than anything. the leg coming off was gross, at least kirk's arm is drawn more cartoonishly.

Still the greatest episode in the past 13 years.
Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind, was brilliant. I loved it. I can not be the only one who actually enjoyed the hell out of this episode?
I personally think it be put in Season 9/10 and it would fit in.

Watched this and thought it was solid, although the plot cheats a bit (of course).

I don't know if there was a running poll/debate, but Seasons 3-5 were my picks of the litter.

But those clips were actually watchable.

If you want awful, I can do that, too.

I remember an interview with early Simpsons writers who explained they deliberately kept computers/the internet out of episodes because they weren't sure if they would be a fad and didn't want to date the show in rerun.

This link is the opposite of that.

Do they have Krusty's "Partially Gelatinated, Non-Dairy, Gum-Based Beverages"?
