The Sims 2 announced for consoles and handhelds

http://ps2.ign.com/articles/605/605072p1.html

Apparently this one will be closer to the PC games. Oh, and the GC version might feature some Nintendo fanservice too:

IGN: What will the differences be between the different console versions?

Scot Amos: The PS2 will have EyeToy and HDD support so you can take pictures of yourself and put them inside the game. You can decorate your whole house with a wallpaper of yourself if you really wanted to. It's a cute way to get yourself more into the game. And the hard drive which is a great way to save games or cache content for faster loading times.

Xbox has HDTV so it will be true 720p. Beautiful, hi-res, crisp graphics which is great and on the GameCube we've actually given some custom content. We're finalizing the pieces for it, but we'll definitely have an announcement for that at E3.

IGN: Are we going to see Mario in the game?

Scot Amos: I cannot answer that question just yet. [laughs] Hopefully at E3.

IGN: Luigi, then?

Scot Amos: Nice try, Ed.

Previews of the GBA and DS versions:

I hope they retain prior console elements though. The mission and co-op mode made the game flat out better on consoles, to my tastes. Well, barring the shit awful Bustin' Out sequel that is.

Sims co-op, while somewhat disturbing, is way more addictive than it should be.

I'm just glad this game will be one actually utilizing the DS' capabilities. Let us not forget that the DS version of the Urbz was the GBA game with touch-screen elements added. I can't wait to see how it comes out.

I didn't think they could take such mediocre graphics and make them look worse, but the DS version... :lol

It's on quasi-N64 hardware...of course it would look considerably work. Jeesh, what do you expect?

Where's the PSP version? Or did I miss it?

I actually am pretty surprised how faithful the DS version looks for what it is. Although, it's likely I've gone crazy.

I don't think the DS version looks bad. They spoke briefly about creating art with the stylus. I'm sort of curious to see how that turns out. EA sort of wet their feet there with Need For Speed, hopefully this game can advance it to a much greater degree. I always had fun playing around with the concept in Animal Crossing anyway.

:lol at Reirom reference

And custom music? I wonder what they mean.

EA's definitely getting a good grasp of the DS hardware now. This looks much better than their previous efforts. I'm liking what I see. For once, I'm actually a little excited. I loved the original Sims on PC, and the DS version might just be the perfect game to have on the go.

Mario is playing house ;)

I might get this for PSP, especially if there is downloadable content like the PC version (doubtful, I know, but who knows).

Why is it doubtful? Actually, I'd say it's extremely likely and a feature they'd like to play up.

I dunno, I always assume that EA will take the lazy way out I suppose. I hope I'm wrong. Plus if you can download user-created content it is possible that a "Sims 2 - Bustin' Out" wouldn't sell as well and I doubt EA would want that.

I think they'll try to make use of the features of both handhelds systems well. For Sims 2 on PSP, downloadable content is practically a no-brainer. There's a place for a Memory Stick Duo, and easy connection to a PC. I doubt it'll be in any real meaningful way (like some expansion pack), but we'll probably get like new tile sets and some plants and maybe a bunch of items for download.

After learning that the PS2 version has EyeToy support, it would be a good idea to allow people to transfer their EyeToy photos from the PS2 version to the PSP version. Connectivity rules! :D

Alternatively, you could simply transfer photos over from your PC to the PSP.

I'm surprised to see that the PS2 version is going to support the HDD, even though the HDD itself seems to be on the back burner. I don't have the HDD, but for the people that do, it's a nice bonus.

From the article:
EA likes to think big and so The Sims 2 will be coming to all three consoles and four different handhelds this fall. That's the PS2, Xbox, GameCube, GBA, DS, PSP, and even mobile phones.

I said a LONG time ago that Mario characters should appear in the Sims (along with mushroom-kingdom related items etc.). I'm glad this is happening, if true. Hopefully on the scale I was imagining (though probably not).

They should include the SNES version of Sim City with the GC port. Hell, they should just port SNES Sim City to GBA too. :)
