If nautical nonsense is something you wish, then you might be pleased to know that Nickelodeon as deemed it necessary to produce a Spongebob musical, which will be previewing in Chicago in June before it heads to the Broadway big leagues.

The SpongeBob Musical is co-conceived and directed by Tina Landau with a book by Kyle Jarrow, music supervision by Tom Kitt.

The SpongeBob Musical will be a one-of-a-kind musical event with original songs by Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Jonathan Coulton, Dirty Projectors, The Flaming Lips, John Legend, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants and T.I., with an additional song by David Bowie and additional lyrics by Jonathan Coulton.

Casting Info:

Starring as SpongeBob Squarepants is Ethan Slater, a recent Vassar graduate. Joining Slater as SpongeBob's squirrely friend Sandy Cheeks is Lilli Cooper, known from the original Broadway cast of "Spring Awakening."

The Bikini Bottom ensemble also includes Gaelen Gilliland, Curtis Holbrook, Stephanie Hsu, L’ogan J’ones, Emmy Raver Lampman, Mark Ledbetter, Kelvin Moon Loh, Vasthy Mompoint, JC Schuster, Abby C. Smith and Jason Michael Snow. Additional casting will be announced at a later date.

It might be worth noting that the cast will not be in full-on costumes like you may have seen in other performances. It's likely that they'll wear something similar to what's in the poster.

Performances Begin on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 Limited Engagement through Sunday, July 3, 2016 In Chicago’s Oriental Theatre

Jonathan Coulton, Flaming Lips (it may just be the song they did for the movie), and They Might Be Giants are working on this? Color me interested.

Cautiously optimistic about this. I hope it's based more on the first movie than the new one.

Also, holy crap I just remembered the Plain White T's were a thing.

Just make sure it includes "Ripped Pants", "Sweet Victory", "Jellyfish Jam", and I'd definitely take my friend to see it.
