The Surge - Behind the scenes

I heard that the game is 1080P/60 and dynamic 4K/30 on Pro. This is a good way to do pro support but I do hope that the 60FPS is actually 60FPS and not a target 60. If it is then that's be mighty impressive.

The other thing I hope is that this game turns out good, not just because I want the developers to be supported but also because (a bit more selfish reasons) I don't want to put faith in them and get this full price to play on launch day only for the game to drop in price 2 weeks later because it turned out to be mediocre.

Framerate holds solid and no tearing of any kind so far. The big video is up but just waiting for it to become 1080/60 before I post it.

:)

Hopefully Best Buy has some copies, if the reviews are decent and word of mouth remains good I may pick it up with my GCU discount.

Fuck that 4th boss man. I've been trying for a few hours now.
I need to stop and go to sleep bcuz I've got work tomorrow...

Hoooboy. Even though I love this type of game, my tolerance for super hard games seems to be waning. I summoned for the last few Nioh bosses, mainly because I was wildly under leveled.

Still probably buying The Surge. Zero willpower.

Yes this game is hard. And I've played through every Souls game, Nioh and Bloodborne solo without any summons and this game is testing me. You just really, really have to be careful with your attacks and dealing with multiple enemies. You can be dropped quickly.

As for the embargo mess. I will say the publisher was super nice. He said he went and watched some of my videos and actually wished me success. Complimented my channels lack of screaming over videos and appreciated my impressions I gave. Even the negative ones. On top of that, whoever complained wanted me to get a strike on my channel, but the person who responded to me said that's harsh and they just requested politely to make it private for a day. Really cool of them. I'm just glad I was able to give out some info to you guys.

That's why I make my videos man, to just share and be apart of gaming and the community around it. It's what I love to do, I'm happy even though my channel is tiny people here appreciate my approach. Thanks for all the kind words gaf, you guys have been awesome!

Has the enemy variety been decent? Also how grindy has the gear progression been? Needing to collect multiples of the same weapon/gear to craft seems like it might get annoying

And yeah, that Nioh review you shared definitely got me to subscribe. I only really watch gaming youtube channels for discussion and analysis (ie Game Makers Toolkit, Extra Credit, Cane and Rinse, Ultrabrilliant) and your stuff was well-spoken, concise, and to the point

Can you grind and grind to get stronger? Is that a thing in this game? Thanks.

One thing that I loved about this game and forgot to mention is, you will get a new move/combo when you level up your weapon proficiency.
I'll make a new video about every weapon in action again, after I've got a maximum level on each type of weapon.

Oh boy, this game is so gooooooooood. xD

Do all weapons in a class share the same moves (ie all twin-rigged), or do different twin-rigged weapons, for example, have different moves?

Did you play Lords of the Fallen? Did you enjoy it?

So, based on impressions, is it safe to think the game is geared towards hardcore gamers? For people who enjoy harder more challenging games and not casual gamers.

Several people have said its harder than Nioh and even some of the Souls games but that's probably a big YMMV situation

Yes, I think so. But I'll try that for you after work. Just in case.

Did you play Lords of the Fallen? Did you enjoy it?

Yes but just a little bit. Got it from a PS Plus free game but I don't like it that much so I stop. :\

I said that too. lol
I've played all Souls games, Nioh and Bloodborne.

Is that croch-evade move part of the moveset of all weapons? Some kind of skill? Just another evasion move?

I saw it in some of the trailers/footage shown, but It seems like is not a standard move?, since I never seen any streamer do it...

That's good to hear, I'm always up for a good challenge.

You can equip different chips that do everything from give you an estus flask type healing item/ability and other distinct stuff so perhaps there is a dodge one. I also haven' seen anyone using it.

I believe the embargo over videos is over tomorrow correct? Guess we'll be seeing some more stuff though I think I might hold off till the game comes out since we're so close at this point.

Normal videos without impressions/review are tomorrow. Tuesday for the rest

I have a feeling this is going to review well. It would be great if The Surge could be a real breakthrough game for this developer. Sounds like they've made tremendous strides since Lords of the Fallen. The linked 6 hr preview from a few posts up called their progress between the two games "seismic".

Hype.

Just got paid, and Deck13 just got a pre-order on PS4!

Props on the Pro support!

Unlock time is 9PM PST on the 15th, if anyone is interested.

By the way Deck13, I would be happy to play through Lords of the Fallen if it got a 60fps pro patch.

It's a real solid game. I just got through my 4th boss. After playing more, I think I have a better sense of why it is difficult. It really feels like the game was designed to punish you for your mistakes, and then capitalize on the impatience of trying to get back to where you were.

I know this is common in the Souls games, but it feels much more pronounced here. The real difference in regards to this is how you approach each enemy and what you want to gain from the encounter.

So far, I have yet to find any weapons or armor just laying around. No magic chest that includes a great set of gear to help carry you through. You have to target and hunt down everything you want from the enemies themselves.

It's brilliant design, because doing this forces you into two options. You can either attack and enemies unarmored limb, which helps you defeat them MUCH easier. However, you are almost never going to get scrap, materials, or gear doing this. On the flip side, you go for an armored limb. Problem is the armored limbs have much higher damage resist, the enemies can withstand getting stunned or knocked down, and sometimes eat one of your attacks while also dishing it back for big damage.

It creates a real fun, difficult, but extremely rewarding balance. The move sets for the weapon types are also very deep. With horizontal and vertical attacks, being able to charge them, and then when you mix them together creating completely different strings of attacks. It only has 5 weapon types, although at first that seemed limiting, it's actually a better design decision because you need to become intimate with each and every attack you attempt to use in combat.

Depending on who, what, or how many enemies I'm fighting I may not even use certain moves at all. What may work great for targeting an unarmored limb on a solo enemy, might be terrible for managing and kiting a group.

Now, after 10 hours, it does have one glaring problem. So far, the games look, tone, and mood, have been pretty drab. I haven't run into any real big set-piece or boss encounter that is really memorable. Part of it is the environment, part of it is the musical score. It's not bad in anyway but it isn't memorable either. Nothing compared to the scope and grandeur of the Souls games.

Still, if you have seen my factual opinion series, I am giving this game a 4/5. I feel it's a big step-up, and if you are wanting a new Souls game or a sci-fi arpg, this game is extremely easy to recommend. Just be aware of the difficulty, it is very punishing. On the flipside, the sense of reward is awesome. I've beaten bosses and stood up in my chair fist pumping and talking shit to my monitor. Hopefully this mock-review/impressions helps you guys out!

Also, Karak, you are a huge influence on me. You have shown that guys who aren't screaming and shouting and like to be in depth with their thoughts and analysis have a place in the world. I appreciate that.

Haven't played it myself, but I did ask Phloxy how the movement and controls felt during his stream the other day and he described the movement and combat as snappy and responsive

I would imagine that as always with these games, it depends on the gear.

But LotF was SUPER heavy regardless of gear, and the gameplay I've seen so far of this definitely seems snappier. The dodging in particular.

Becoming steadily more interested the more previews I read. I'll be pleasantly surprised if this game comes out of pretty much nowhere to contest Nioh for best Souls-like of 2017.

I'm so in. That Pro support looks delicious too. I'll take both modes for a spin, although I usually prioritize image over performance (fucking hate dem jaggies), something that I definitely did for Tomb Raider. However, with Nioh I found out pretty quickly that not playing in Performance mode just felt wrong. Probably will end up doing the same here.

Nice to see that impressions are good so far. One of the main things that still worry me is the variety in environments, and hopefully there are memorable bosses as well. Music is okay from what I've heard in the boss fights so far, although it hasn't really caught my attention

Ok for those playing. Im freaking lost. I fought the first boss. Went down in the dark tunnels. Got to a security door. Now Im just going in circles and no idea how to progress.

so... my big takeaway from this post....

Deck 13 haters can eat shit then?!

i'm pumped

If you beat the bosses there is always a tram right near by or within the level that opens

Otzdarva (youtuber) did a video review of a demo (I think? Not sure if a demo or a review copy or something) of the game and it looked pretty fun to be honest

I will most likely grab this along with Nioh

Hearing the game doesn't have a spectacle/Vistas or traditional armor loot is a bit disheartening. So many great moments in souls are from reaching these breathtaking new places. I also have a lot of fun getting different armor and making myself look exactly how I want fashion souls style. As strong as the gameplay might be I can't say that's enough to carry my interest.

But hey, I'm at least willing to hear more impressions and watch the acg review

Just pre-order it on my PS4. Free theme that come with pre-order looks lame anyway, it should be and can be much better with a little bit effort.
