The Surge |OT| Live Die Repeat

I'm liking this so far, nice balance of difficulty and achievement, the limb targeting is a welcome addition to the formula of soulsborne and the ability to pause alone is great.

I've just found the 2nd Medbay after about 13 deaths so far

Who thought it was a good idea to put enemies in the narrow tunnels?

Why is there a terminator at the top of this lift?

How am I supposed to see anything with this garbage fucking flashlight?

Where is this next fucking shortcut?

Was Rome built in a day??

Yep, generally this is how I feel all the time. It is actually much strnger in this game than in the souls games.

I heard there is an implant that turns something into health so you can cross those acid pools. That underground layer in the first area is calling me.

It doesn't work with toxic pools, only gas. You can however use the Liquidator set which will pretty much halve the elemental damage.

Yup, I thought so. Any specific area to find Mk.III materials?

From my experience you can get them from specific armor sets the enemy is wearing

MK I: Lynx and Rhino
MK II: Scarab and Liquidator
MK III: Elite Hazard and Gorgon
MK IV: late game spoilers
Bloody Proteus, Cerberus, and Chrysalis

Edit: Tungsten used for weapon upgrades will drop alongside arms

Im digging this game but it also feels pretty cheap at times. I'd say the biggest complaint I have is how often I'm stuck in a small space with an enemy. Area 4 is particularly egregious in this regard. Putting flamethrower enemies in a narrow hall where the attack is unavoidable, the toxic grenade guys who can kill me in one hit with a nudge of their gun, the proteus unit in the service hall as soon as you come up a lift... Feels pretty shitty. Especially when I clear the area and the gorgon guards that show up are infinitely easier to deal with. Feels like a design problem and not so much a me problem.

I'm wondering, does anyone else have as much of a problem with the flashlight as I seem to be?

This thing is worthless unless you're walking really slowly, because the damn thing is attached to your characters upper body and points in the general direction of the body's movement. So when you're running and the character is hunched over the damn thing is pointing straight at the ground. The only way I've found to get it to point straight forward is to lightly tilt the stick to walk slowly, and even then it still doesn't illuminate quite as much as I'd like.

It wouldn't be a big issue, but a lot of this game is quite dark.

Went away for work for a few days, came back, and I'm getting repeatedly punished by the
Big Sister
. I'm counting 4 deaths so far, which seems like a lot when the first two bosses only took 2 tries each. The
first phase
is pretty easy, and I can do it without having to heal, but I can't seem to come up with a solid game plan for
phase 2
. I don't know if it's the
camera perspective
, or just that the
boss isn't mobile and I can't strafe and dodge around it
, but that fight seems pretty alien to me. It's something I definitely wasn't prepared for. Anyway, I'm going in again and I'll try and keep my cool and pay close attention to what's happening around me. Wish me luck. :P

Different body armors have different flashlights. Some are really good while others are worthless

In area 4 there's a toxic rebreather hotswap implant that nullifies all envirodamage other than fire.

Yeah that's the one and it doesn't work with toxic ground, I tested yesterday.

ah

Hey btw about the nanite thing from Chavez, I'm thinking it's time related. If you go back there before a certain time (maybe just after area 5?) she'll give you the nanites and Charlene will be alive in area 6?

Not sure if this helps at all but I did get some stuff from Chavez before the sixth area

Man, I'm loving this game in NG+. It turns into a game of keeping your multiplier and trying to make Warren as ridiculously OP as possible. I like the added dudes where you aren't expecting them with V2 boss weapons too! The maps and shortcut also make a ton more sense when going through a second time.

I've pretty much done a 180 on my thoughts of the game since yesterday (in a positive regard). Maybe they should balance Area 4 and 5 a bit more to avoid the cheapness some people are experiencing, because it would be a shame for them not to experience NG+ (like I almost didn't!)

This is ridiculous, lol. I kinda like the combos of that weapon though.

First boss next, died pretty fast.

What carries over into NG+ from your previous game?

Killed the first boss and got the PAX Imperator 2.0. Died about 5-6 times, despite knowing what I needed to do. But once you get the patterns and telegraphs memorised it becomes a snap. The hardest bit for me was getting the armour off of its legs. The sprinting slide attack was great for this. After that it was easy.

Oh, snap, selling me on a buy with the bolded alone

It's possibly the only game on PC where I've bothered to use the lock on system, because the use of the scroll wheel makes cycling between body parts very smooth. It's quite intuitive.

Everything except the Coins.
*sigh*

I would have had all the coins my first run had I paid attention and not died in the toxic waste smelter. An enemy (which I think came from the greenhouse) came outta nowhere and hit Warren while I was unpaused after unlocking the trophy, next thing you know NO VITAL SIGNS and no coin left where I died...

I still gotta finish the game but alas, the Iron Maus armor shall go unclaimed.

My personal boss rankings.

1.
Firebug

2.
Assembly line (would be #1 if not for the shit camera in P3, lighting is fantastic in this fight)

3.
Robot (was intense the first time fighting it)

4.
Cerberus dude (pretty boring fight, just a dude - would be cooler with some gimmicks/mechanics)

5.
Last boss (what a piece of shit - junk camera and tediously massive HP pool in P1, borrring P2)

Overall the bosses can't even compare to Souls games (probably not even LoTF) but they were alright. Only
Firebug
had some music ramp in P2 that added to the intensity.

Im such an idiot, didnt know you could focus on the weakest body part for a much better damage, now im surviving, i was getting wrecked!

As I understand it, if you target the armoured body parts you're almost guaranteed to get a drop from them. If you target the unarmoured body part, your chance of an item drop is severely diminished.

Small spaces means the game wants you to parry attacks. 90% of the time when your forced down a narrow corridor you're fighting the crate bots which have a very long wind up on all their attacks.

The fire guys can be killed in one hit and their aoe is so small just sit back and wait it out until they reload.

If the grenadiers are killling you in one shot then you need to plug in more health boosts. The game expects you to do this as leveling up has zero statistical benefits other than giving you more core power to apply more implants and use better armor. The game throws health boosters at you so take the hit somewhere else and bump your health a little.

I'll give you the t bot on the lift. Unless you parry him almost immediately he can do crazy damage to you. It's somewhat alleviated by the fact that there's a shortcut a room back though.

Area 4 is the first area in the game where it really starts to force you to use the full mechanical suite the game offers in order to do well. Now, if you want to argue the game could do a much better job explaining itself better mechanically Id agree with you, but it's not cheap.

You were so frustrated by the end areas that you were ready to quit! Glad you changed your mind.

What got you through the unbalanced portions? I'm just starting my playthrough

Switched to a heavy-duty weapon for more impact. Allows for more reliable combos.

I'm doing one-handed in NG+ though and impact seems just as good.

Man, 4th boss is tough. That PAX swing is brutal, he just repeats it over and over.
Ya, gotta stay behind him as much as possible. The swing does insane damage. I'm on him right now in NG+ and I may as well be naked. Medium armor, with 3 HP implants and I am still getting 1 shot.

Other than a random scrap drop you won't get anything from an unarmored part unless it is the weapon arm. Then you get the usual weapon drop.

Can we talk about hit detection? It's not guaranteed that you'll hit the desired body part because it depends on your positioning + horizontal/vertical swinging. I like that.

This is ridiculous, lol. I kinda like the combos of that weapon though.

First boss next, died pretty fast.

That shows a pet peeve of mine with the exosuit design: the gloves should either cover the hand completely or be on the palm of the hands. No point in having them in the back of the hand.

Way it currently is, Warren has some goddamn ridiculous finger strength.

I'm really going to regret not tracking down more mk5 health boosters before going ng+ aren't I? :'(

I just started the game and so far it is pretty good. The things I don't like are the level design and the enemy placement. Especially if you have played hundreds of hours of the Souls games. Voice work is also mediocre at best.

The thing I don't get is the crafting. I know you use your "souls" for it but what about those items you need? Do they drop random from enemies or can I force them to drop by cutting certain body parts? And the banking of "souls" is pretty much to save them so you don't have to run around with them like in Dark Souls if you don't have enough to level up?

Overall the bosses can't even compare to Souls games (probably not even LoTF) but they were alright.
This is of course subjective but comparing to Dark Souls 1 bosses (only one I've played through) I think the bosses are fine. 80% of the bosses in DS1 are the same quality or even shittier (Gaping Dragon, Bed of Chaos, Pinwheel, Moonlight Butterfly etc). The best bosses in DS1 are way better though.

Either I leveled up too much in the second area, or the second area's boss was weak sauce.

Bosses are mechanical fights, you could beat them naked with enough patience. On my third restart I killed the first, second and fourth boss without taking any damage.

Can you explain? I have hundreds of hours logged in Souls games and I think the level design in The Surge is outstanding. Enemy placement also makes sense.
