The Thing Remastered Review: A Classic Masterpiece modernized

If there are two things I love it's 1) John Carpenter movies and 2) Survival horror games...and while The Thing on PS2 is a legendarily good survival horror game, playing it in 2024 can be a bit clunky and it def could use some modern QOL improvements.

Which means obv Nightdive Studios is going to remaster The Thing and make a masterpiece somehow both brand new and timeless at the same time!

and with the story of The Thing (the game) being canon confirmed by John Carpenter himself...it's the film sequel we never got which makes it all the better

10/10 remaster of a classic game

I booted it up to test it out and was mostly surprised, in a good way. The biggest shock for me was that it supports my 32:9 monitor (except cutscenes). It felt weird seeing it considering it's a PS2 remaster, but I was definitely happy.

The graphics look smooth, and they have a nice blue hue to everything.
Some weird things I noticed - Some audio, specifically dialogue, seemed out of sync in some places. Found it quite jarring when a cutscene was about to be triggered. It's like the game closes and the cutscene loads, and then the game opens again, like they aren't part of the same game or something. Not the smoothest transitions.

Apart from that, it does run smooth, which is a nice change these days, and some of that PS2 era jank is still there, but it just feels right.

I'm definitely thinking about picking this up. The last time I watched this was an actual 35mm screening where the first half of the film real had a red tint and the last half had the correct coloring. It was wild.

Welcome to 2002!

Really though, the improvements they made are really impressive, while sticking to the original.
It’s the size.. played the OG ofc.
But something more like deadspace UI would be 30 worth imo
